Where''s the doc for get(), post(), put(), delete() & head()?
These HTTP Request methods are used for testing. They are discussed in
the testing chapter of the Agile Web Development with Rails book, as
well as in http://manuals.rubyonrails.com/read/chapter/28#page72 "A
Guide to Testing the Rails".

exclude a column in save!
Hi all,
I have a column that peeks its value from a sequence (postgres) some
times. Other times, I set it to a certain value.
This column has a default value of "nextval(''the_sequence'')"... When I
want that this column peeks the value from the sequence, I do this:
obj = Mymodel.new
obj.some_column1 = blah
obj.some_column2 = blah
obj.some_column3 = blah
obj.save!

inserts now set unset columns to null
Hi,
I upgraded to Ruby 1.8.4 and whatever the latest Rails is as of March 29
2006.
I am using PostgreSQL 7.4.
With the earlier version of rails, I had insert queries that looked like
this:
Topic Create (0.001189) INSERT INTO topics ("inlibrary",
"irx_display_title", "irx_title", "title", "creation_stamp",
"last_update_stamp",

All functional tests fail with RoutingError
All,
I''m using InstantRails 1.0 on Windows XP and all my functional
(controller) tests fail with ActionController::RoutingError, although
the actions work OK through a web server/browser. Here''s an example of
an error:

How do I get substring of utf-8 string?
I''m trying to get substring from a utf-8 encoded string. (say, first
50 characters of the string) String#[0..49] would give me the first
50 bytes not 50 characters..
I know there is jcode library, but it only let you count number of
characters in utf-8 string.
unicode gem doesn''t seem to help much. unicode_hacks gem seem to
solve the problem, but it also seems to

debugging 500 Internal Server Error when dispatch.fcgi run?
I''m trying to get my Ruby on Rails application to work under Apache. It
works fine when run as WEBrick ("ruby script/server").
As suggested in
http://www.ocssolutions.com/support/ruby/troubleshooting-ruby-on-rails.php
, I tried running dispatch.fcgi on the command line. When I run it, no
matter where I run it, it outputs:
500 Internal Server Error

ActionPack tests are failing
Hi,
i''m currently looking into a problem with the tests for ActionPack. 127
of them are failing on my windows machine. On Linux everything is
working fine so far. I just wasted a good part of an hour trying to find
the problem on windows...the solution is: Nitro and not Windows.
I''m using Edge Rails and have no rails gem installed. On Windows I have

Modifying data before update or save
Hi,
I''d like to upcase a variable before it is saved, but I''m not sure how
to access the incoming param or where this work should be performed:
In my update method, I have:
@device = Device.find(params[:id])
params[:device[macaddress]].upcase <-- problem code

Rack content-length Rack::Lint::LintErrors errors with unicorn
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I can get it to happen all
the time if I issue a HEAD request, but it only happens very
intermittently on GET requests.
I''m using Ruby 1.9.2p180.
Any ideas on where to start debugging?

Mock today
In some of my unit tests, I find the need to set today to a different
value than the actual today. For example, to test the model method
"balance_of_today", which takes no argument, I want to have Date.today
be a specific date for the purpose of testing. In other words, I want
to do something like this:
mock_today(Date.new(2008, 2, 1)) do
... test code...

how does rails do this "find_by_?"
Hello there,
I''m wondering how do they create functions on the fly?
find_by_any_column_name ??
I want to do something similar with my models, but I don''t really know
how to do it?
user_current_nickname
user_current_id
user_current_role
etc.?

PUT- or POST-ing xml
I''d like to write a test of a REST service wherein XML is submitted as the
request entity.
In Test::Unit on Rails, this seems to be possible in an integration test,
but not in a functional test. RSpec uses the Rails functional test
framework, as far as I can tell, so it suffers the same result; it tries to
symbolize the keys of the ''parameters'' hash, except the

Assert_select
Hi all
This is my first post here. I ave been using Rails for a couple of
months, and am starting to put together a test suite. But I''m having a
problem with assert_select in my functional tests.
According to the documentation, it should be fine with two arguments -
a CSS selector and a string to test it against. But no matter what I
do I keep getting the exception:
