RV: By sentence
Hi dear listers Do you know how to made a mean by one or more categorical variables? I can do that quite easy on SAS by in R I just can't do it E.g. Some fishes Sex Lenght male 15 fema 20 fema 17 fema 19 male 18 So the idea is mean(Lenght) by sex, in order to have sex: Male mean=XX Sex: Fema mean=YY In this case is quite easy to do it by a loop, but I have a huge DB so is not an

Reasons to Use R
Dear All, The institute I work for is organizing an internal workshop for High Performance Computing (HPC). I am planning to attend it and talk a bit about fluid dynamics, but there is also quite a lot of interest devoted to data post-processing and management of huge data sets. A lot of people are interested in image processing/pattern recognition and statistic applied to geography/ecology, but I

Plot symbols dimensions
I am writing some code to obtain publication-like plots (like the ones can be obtained with SigmaPlot). I am not able to find the dimensions of a point. Parameters like cex make you able to make it bigger or smaller but I need to know the exact dimension (in relative coordinates : if my plot is 640x480 a dot plotted with cex=1.5 will be...)

R equivalent for SQL query
Hi, I have a query which I would like to translate into R, but I do not know how to do it in an easy way. Assume a data frame has columns A, B and C: A B C 1 1 3 1 1 4 1 1 5 1 2 6 1 2 7 1 3 8 The query is as follows: select A, B, count(*) from data.frame group by A, B order by count(*) desc How do I translate this into R statements in such way that the result is a data frame structured as

database table merging tips with R
I have not devoted time to setting up ROracle since binaries are not available and it seems to require some effort to compile (see http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/ROracle/index.html). On the other hand, RODBC worked more or less magically once I set up the data sources. What is your success using ROracle and why would it be preferable to RODBC ? -Avram On Thursday, September 11,

Ways to work with R and Postgres
Hi, I post this message to the general r-help list hoping anyone within a wider range have suggestions: There are three ways to integration R and postgres, especially on 64bit Microsoft windows Platform, 1. via RODBC package, which has 32 bit and 64 bit version for windows 2. via RPostgres interface, which only has 32bit version currently 3. via plr for Greenplum, which only supports a

run query using rexcel runrfile and rodbc sql query
Hi, I'm using R-2.8.1 for windows. I wrote a script calls the RODBC package to run sql queries against an oracle database. It runs fine when run from the rconsole and returns a data.frame with a summary for a set of experiments. I want to run this script using the rinterface.RunRFile command in an excel plugin, using the rexcel package. When I run the code from my excel plugin I

MySQL + R as a Replacement for SAS Proc SQL + Various Stat Procs
For cost reasons, I'd like to replace SAS on my PC under Win XP Pro. Nearly all my work involves medium-size datasets (100k-10M) records which I cleanup, relate, fliter and get into shape for analysis using SAS/SQL followed by standard statistical procedures, e.g. regression using SAS proc reg. It seems to me that this type of analysis could be done in MySQL followed by R, but I'd like

data summerization etc...
Hello, I am trying to do some fairly straightforward data summarization, i.e., the kind you would do with a pivot table in excel or by using SQL queires. I have a moderately sized data set of ~70,000 records and I am trying to compute some group averages and sum values within groups. the code example below shows how I am trying to go about doing this pti <-rnorm(70000,10) fid <-

Reading SQL Server Tables using RODBC
Hello Everyone,   I'm still quite new to R and am having trouble reading SQL Server Tables using RODBC. I've looked though the RODBC documentation as well as material I found online and in the book "Data Manipulation with R," but I just can't quite seem to get things to work.   Right now, I have code that looks something like:   channel <- odbcDriverConnect

Temporary tables with Microsoft SQL?
I can create a temp table with MySQL and R DBI[1], but I don't see how to do the same with Microsoft SQL 2005 and RODBC. R 2.8.1 creates the table, but then it can never see it. I'm looking to avoid replacing the convenience functions like sqlSave(). [1] https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2009-March/190033.html > library(RODBC) > channel <-

Using RODBC to use SQL queries
Hello, I am new to the RODBC package, but I have looked over the PDF as well as a few websites that go over the SQL language. I can connect to my database fine using >channel<-odbcConnect("Oracle ODBC") # then am prompted to enter my user id and password After that I'd like to use the odbcQuery function and the SQL statement: SELECT * FROM table_name WHERE SAMPLE_YEA LIKE
