How to add elements to a table
Hi, I've been using R for a few weeks now, but consider myself still a newbie, especially in what concerns the basics of data handling in R. My situation is this: I read in data from a database using RODBC, and then use "table" to produce a table of "counts per years", table which I give to "plot". All is well, as long as there are no gaps in the years

Repeat if
Hello, (Power Book G4, Mac OS X, R 2.5.0) I would like to repeat the function range for 85 Vectors (V1-V85). I tried with this code: i<-0 > repeat { + i<-i+1 + if (i<85) next + range (Vi, na.rm = TRUE) + if (i==85) break + } I presume that the Vi is wrong, because in this syntax i is not known as a variable. But I donĀ“t know how to say that it is a variable here. Would be nice if

regular expressions : extracting numbers
Hello all, I have a vector of character strings, in which I have letters, numbers, and symbols. What I wish to do is obtain a vector of the same length with just the numbers. A quick example - extract of the original vector : "lema, rb 2%" "rb 2%" "rb 3%" "rb 4%" "rb 3%" "rb 2%,mineuse" "rb" "rb" "rb 12"

FW: sapply to return factors in dataframe
Ahhrg List, there was a hitch in the previous code. Updated and functional version follows after my initial question: I am trying to randomise a dataframe with mixed factors/numeric variables and return a new (randomised) dataframe with the same columns (as factors/numeric). simgap<-function(x) { ma<-max(x) mi<-min(x) Xout<-runif(length(x),min=mi,max=ma) return(Xout) }

Take care with codes()! (was type of representation)
Ahh yes, sorry about that. Here's the corrected snippet: # Create an Example Data Frame Containing Car x Color data carnames <- c("bmw","renault","mercedes","seat") carcolors <- c("red","white","silver","green") datavals <- round(rnorm(16, mean=10, sd=4),1) data <- data.frame(Car=rep(carnames,4),

Is glm weird or am I?
Hi, I've written a script that checks all bivariate correlations for variables in a matrix. I'm now trying to run a logistic regression on each pair (x,y) where y is a factor with 2 levels. I don't know how (or whether I want) to try to fathom what's up with glm. What I wrote is attached. Here's what I get. *****************************************************

minor tick marks
Hi ! I need a plot for data extending over several orders of magnitude on the y axis. The following command generates a nice looking semi-log plot for my data: plot(x,y,log="y",type="l",lty=3, ylim=c(0.01,2),yaxp=c(0.01,1,1),las=1) I would appreciate having also minor tick marks in-between the 3 major ticks obtained with the above command. The "minor.tick" function

Error in using nlevels in apply function
Dear R users, I am currently trying to create my first personnal function and use it with the apply function. The purpose of this function is to create a vector summarizing the number of levels in a given selection of data.frame columns. I tried to transpose the indexation method used by the nlevels function but it doesn't seem to work. I did not find anything uesful in the archives so

Read stata file from internet?
Dear R-helpers, I would like to have my students read into R an online Stata dataset: 'http://www.stat.ucla.edu/projects/datasets/risk_project.dta' I was able to read it into R after downloading it and converting it with StatTransfer (http://www.stattransfer.com/). Here is what happens when I use read.dta() as I would use read.table(): > require(foreign) > risk2 <-

dotchart vs. dotplot ... groups
I'm trying to create a dotplot with some grouping. I've been able to create what I want using dotchart (basic graphics), but can't quite get it using dotplot (lattice). I prefer to use lattice (or ggplot2) because I think it's a bit easier to control some other aspects of the plot appearance. Basically, w/ lattice I've not been able to get the y-axis label to include the

overlaid filled contour plots
I'm trying to make a set of contour plots of bivariate kernel density estimates, showing three such plots overlaid, similar to this plot http://euclid.psych.yorku.ca/SCS/Private/Test/ridge-boot2.pdf except that I would like to have the contours *filled* (using transparent colors). To make this reproducible, I've saved the results of KernSmooth::bkde2D() in the following file:

Different date formats in one column
I doubt your actual file looks like the mess that made it to my email software (below) because you posted HTML-format email. Read the Posting Guide, and in particular figure out how to send plain text email. You might try the "anytime" contributed package, though I suspect it too will choke on your mess. Otherwise, that will pretty much leave only a brute-force series of regular

persuade tabulate function to count NAs in a data frame
Hi, I'd like to ask you a question again. It is basically about data frames, NAs and tabulate function. I have this data frame. I already used this in one of the previous questions of mine. It intentionally looks this simple, my real 'df' dataframe is much bigger actually and again, I am not willing to annoy anyone with huge databases... So, my database: id

assign() problem
I've written a piece of code (see below) to do a wavelet image decomposition, during the evaluation of this code I would like to write the results of some calculations back to the R root directory. I used assign() to do so because the names should vary when going thrue a while() loop. For some unknown reason I get an error that says: Error in assign(varname[i], imwrImage) :

survfit function - event information???
Hi all! I am trying to extract output information from the survfit function in order to generate a matrix of select output for multiple factors. Specifically, I am interested in extracting the number of events (in the output below: 106, 2, 3). The variable names represented in my function (ee) are shown below, but none of those variables correspond to the column of events as shown in the output.
