Conversion - lowercase to Uppercase letters
I would like to know how to convert a string with characters to all
uppercase or all lowercase? If anyone could let me know if there exists a
function in R for the conversion, that will be very helpful.

Unix commands on R
I am using R on unix. While in R how do I execute the unix shell commands?
Is there a way to do it? I am executing a function in R and the matrix
resulting from the function has to be passed on as an input to unix command.
Any directions will be helpful.
Thanks,

Correlation ratio
Hi,
I wanted to know how to compute the correlation ratio (eta) between two
variables using R. Is there any function to compute the correlation ratio.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

lsmeans in R
I need help with calculating lsmeans (adjusted means) of different terms in
a linear model including the main effect and the interaction effect terms. I
use lm to run the linear models...I previously noted from literature that
that "effects" package can be used to generate lsmeans. But I tried to use
it but could not figure out which option to use to get means. If anyone can

Creating different matrices in a loop
Hello,
I have a big matrix of size (20,5) -bmat . I have to loop though the rows in
the matrix and create DIFFERENT matrices each time I go through the loop.
counts=c(4,6,10);
p=1;
for (i in 1:length(counts))
{
smat=bmat[p:p+i-1,];
p=p+i;
}
The problem is smat overwrites itself each time inside the loop. I would
like to have smat1, smat2, smat3 instead of a single vector smat.

Timer
Hello,
This might be a very basic question but I was not sure how to go about it. I
just wanted to calcluate the time it takes to run my program. Basically I
was to put a timer at the start and the end of the program in order to see
how much time it takes to give the output (similar to tic-tac in MATLAB) .
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,

correlation matrix - large dataset
Hello,
I have a dataset with 20,000 variables.and I would like to compute a pearson
correlation matrix which will be 20000*20000. The cor() function doesnt work
in this case due to memory problem. If you have any ideas regarding a
feasible way to compute correlations on such a huge dataset, please help me
out.
Please feel free to share your memory handling techniques in R.
Thanks,

subplot strange behavoir
Hello,
Below is some example code that should reproduce an error I'm encountering
while trying to create a tiff plot with two subplots. If I run just the
following bit of code through the R GUI the result is what I'd like to have
appear in the saved tiff image:
x<-seq(0:20)
y<-c(1,1,2,2,3,4,5,4,3,6,7,1,1,2,2,3,4,5,4,3,6)
plot(x,y,type="l",las=1,ylim=c(0,12))

qplot (ggplot2) faceting histogram with missing values
Hi,
I've run into a difficulty with qplot function (in the ggplot2
package). I can facet histograms even when the faceting variable
contains missing values, but only so long as the faceting variable is
not a factor.
Example:
y1 <- rnorm(10)
x1 <- c(rep(1,5), rep(2,4), NA)
x2 <- factor(c(rep(1,5), rep(2,4), NA))
library(ggplot2)
qplot(y1, geom = "histogram", facets =

Histogram using frequency data
Hello,
I wanted to know how to plot a histogram using a vector of frequencies
rather than the data vector as a whole. So I have two vectors: a vector of
labels V1= c("A","B","C","D") and vector B which is a vector of frequencies
of A, B, C and D respectively V2=c(20,50,60,30). I wanted to plot a
histogram of the labels using the frequencies. I could not

ggplot2: can one have separate ylim for each facet?
In lattice
#toy data
library(ggplot2)
library(lattice)
x <- rnorm(100)
y <- rnorm(100)
k <- sample(c("Weak","Strong"),100,replace=T)
j <- sample(c("Tall","Short"),100,replace=T)
w <- data.frame(x,y,j,k)
xyplot(y~x|j+k,scales=list(y=list(relation="free")))
will give you a scale in each subplot with a range equal to the range
of y

little subplot in corner
I want to draw a little subplot ("overview") into my detailed plot. It
should be placed in say the top right corner and have the size of some
legend (like legend(x="topright", inset=0.03, ...)

plot(rnorm(100))
#give little density in corner
plot(seq(-2,2,length=300),dnorm(seq(-2,2,length=300)),type="l")
I don't want something like par(mfrow=c(1,2)) as

Hi,
I'm trying to get a color-gradient triangle out of a large plot.
Wonder can subplot() generate a triangle?
So far, I'm only getting rectangles.
Great appreciation for any reply!!

Multiple plots in one subplot
Hi,
I making a figure with six sub-plots using par(mfcol=c(2,3)). In the last
sub-plot I want to have two graphs instead of one. I have tried using
par(fig=x,y,z,v) but this par seems to overwrite the first par. Is there a
simple solution?
Thanks!

subplot (Hmisc) and radial.plot (plotrix) problem
Folks,
I am having problems with a plot I want to create to give an impression
of changes in an ordinal scale measure (1-5) at three time points (0,
14 and 21 days). I can produce a radial plot of bare vectors but getting
this to appear on the base plot is not possible as it always seems to
end up below the plot area and even outside the plot window.
It seems I have not understood

multiple qplot histograms in one plot
Hi,
I wish to plot multiple histograms(representing different data so different
range along xaxis but y axis is the same) horizontally in ggplot2. I'd like
it to look like facets. Is this possible?

Rotate a plot, and subplot
Hi all,
Is there a way to rotate a plot, e.g. a histogram, by a certain angle
(90/180/270 degress)? I spent hours trying to figure out how this is
done, but without success.
Also, I'm looking for an equivalent to the S-Plus "subplot" command to
insert a kind of "thumbnail" graphic into a bigger one. How is this best
done in R?
Thanks for your help

Is there an alternative to subplot() of splus
Dear R-gurus,
Is there any function in R does the same thing as function subplot()in
Splus?
I am trying to post a pie chart onto the top right hand corner of
existing bar chart.
Also, Does anyone know if I can use paste() to paste the graph to
another graph?
Cheers,

ggplot2 - facetting
Dear All,
After having overcome the issue of legends (thanks, Thierry, once
more), I am trying to use facetting, but here also I can not find how
to do this. I do not want to use qplot, but rather the more flexible
options. However, it seems I am doing still something pretty stupid,
because I always get an error, even if it seems I am doing everything
like the examples.
My code is below.
