problem building first package
Hi,
I am trying to build a package from source for the first time. I'm
using Windows XP. After R CMD INSTALL or R CMD check I get an error
message that I don't understand. I've tried to follow the instrucions
provided in the R Installation and Administration .pdf and the text
file that comes with Rtools, but most of this is new to me and clearly
I'm missing something. Here's

Change of compiler for Windows build of R
The MinGW people have finally released a couple of builds of gcc 4.2.1
(and finally moved the build of 3.4.5 to release status after 19 months as
'candidate').
We intend to use gcc 4.2.1 for the binary distribution of R 2.6.0, and
builds of R-devel are being made with it from now on. The R-admin manual
now contains details of the pieces you need, and in due course there will
be an

Office 97 Help feature doesn't work under Wine 1.1.1
Thanks to help from this forum I finally got Office 97 to install (almost) correctly on wine. Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc all load and seem to function. However, the help feature doesn't work in any of the above. The .hlp files are loaded into drive_c>Program Files>Microsoft Office>Office. In Word when I click on "Help>Contents and Index, I get a list of topic, but when

error compiling R-1.3.1 from source on WinNT
Dear R-help,
I have encountered some errors when trying to compile R-1.3.1 from source on
my WinNT4SP6 laptop (PII w/128MB RAM). I have installed all the tools
following the instruction in src/gnuwin32/INSTALL, with the exception that
the mingw compiler I have might be a bit older (they are the ones
recommended for R-1.3.0, I believe). I have also compiled the ATLAS
libraries from source using

I've just spent a hellish six hours trying to create my own R package with a
bare bones "hello world" R function inside. I was able to create a
package.tar.gz file eventually with much perseverance.
My remaining problem is that when I try to install my simple package under RGui,
it hangs.

Toolchains for x64 Windows
The MinGW-w64 project, whose toolchains we use for 64-bit Windows,
have made some changes to their conventions *and* removed all the
older binary builds from their site. The current toolchains are not
suitable for use with R 2.11.x, and I've re-packaged an older version
(which is) as

The most critical change is to no longer have

RE: [R] ^ operation much slower in R 1.7.1 than in R 1.7 .0 ???
I used the packaged "MinGW-2.0.0-3.exe" exactly as specified on
http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/Rtools/ - in fact I used these recommendations
throughout.
According to the release notes MinGW version 2.0.0 contains the following
list of packages:
GCC-3.2-core-20020817-1
binutils-2.13-20020903-1
mingw-runtime-2.2
w32api-2.0
gdb-5.1.1-1

Then "R CMD config --help" could at least spit out an error stating
what should be installed
(rather than die with an execution error straight from the DOS).
Setting an "sh" in the %Path% (sh coming from cygwin) does not seem to
lead to something working

Progress report on 64-bit builds under Windows

building source package in R run within Emacs under Windows.
Dear R-devel,
I installed R-2.9.1 on the 'y:' drive which happens to be mounted to an IBRIX file system.
I also downloaded and installed the Rtools bundle recommended for 2.9x.
When I build a source package launching R via RGui.exe it seems to work fine:

R CMD build/install: wrong Rtools include path is passed to g++
Never mind. Found the solution: the package coded the rtools path in
Makevars.win. So I was able to compile (but have another problem though). But
not sure if there is an environment name for rtools, maybe RTOOLS_HOME ...
Thanks.

Windows Help files
I have a shareware product that I sell that is windows only (due to the development system, it never will be ported to Mac or Linux). I have been testing it on WINE for about two years and now it almost works with latest version. I want to pass on some info to the makers of the compiler (so mine and other apps will run under wine). One problem I have is that the CHM Help system does not work on

problem building R packages in windows xp
Dear R users,
I am having problems building R packages in Windows xp. I have followed the
instructions from Peter E. Rossi in Documentation -> Other, except for the
TeX version (fpTeX), since when I go to the recommended webpage, it is said
that fpTeX has been discontinued. I have MikTeX in my computer, and I have

Any more clues as to how to reproduce this?

Where is the bug here? It also does on a Unix-alike.
Anything involving R CMD potentially needs the Rtools set in the path. R
CMD config is primarily intended to be used in configure scripts in
packages.
