lightpd / fcgi / RoR setup
Hi,
I''m running RoR and have set it up more or less like described in the
wiki (for instance here
http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/LighttpdWithProcessScripts).
I can start the fcgi listener and see that ports 7000-7004 are
listening. I can start lighttpd, and try to connect to the server. I
can restart the default.fcgi listening scripts that i see in "ps ax |

fcgi to run cgi scripts
Dear experts,
I have rail site that is running lighttpd and fcgi. I want the default
domain to serve the rails application, and I also want to have a
virtualhost (bugs.mysite) to resolve to a bugzilla instance.
Bugzilla is basically Perl application called through CGI.
I tried to find pointers on how to set fcgi to run both rails dispatcher
and other cgi scripts in a different virtualhost, and

What is supposed to happen when you run dispatch.fcgi?
I''ve seen a number of posts where someone says, "What happens if you
just run dispatch.fcgi directly?" Every time I do it, I get a "500:
internal server error" message. I was just curious if that''s what''s
expected running it directly. I assume so, because my apps all work
fine, but that''s always bugged me.

ANN: new rails site/RoR praise
Hi,
>From idea to launch in less than 48 hours (those 48 hours including
the new year party ;) , rails once again showed its effectiveness.
Last friday I read the news about a guy who sold a million pixels for
1$ each on his homepage. After slamming my head during half an hour
for not having thought of it [1], I thought I''d better spend some time
on a rails project, and more as a

OT: Problem rotating logs with lighttpd
Hi everybody,
this is a little OT. We are using Lighttpd as a webserver for Rails.
Our problem is that when we rotate the logs everyday at the end of the
process, lighttpd stops writing the logs. To solve this we have to
restart the server manually each time.
We use a common Debian, lighttpd-1.4.7, Rails 1.0 and fcgi-2.4.0.
I have tracked the lighttpd bugs, and I haven''t found

Reducing Memory Footprint (fcgi)
I have a website up and running on TextDrive with Rails/lighttpd/fcgi.
Unfortunately, as my account is a "shared server" account on TxD, they kill
processes that are hogging resources (quite understandably).
Unfortunately for me, my Ruby fcgi processes load up rather ... large (just
under 50mb). It doesn''t take much to push it to 50mb, at which point it
gets killed.

How do I write a generator?
I''d like to take some advice and write a generator to change the
scaffold.css. How do I do that? I looked on the wiki and googled it
but have not found anything yet.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Rubuntu Live CD for Rails
Friends-
I am almost finished with a custom live cd called Rubuntu ;-) This
is an ubuntu live cd variant that comes preloaded with ruby and rails
developers in mind. I already have it working with all the basics but
I was wondering what extras people would like to see on this distro.
What editors with what configurations?
What other tools do people really like for rails development on a

Production deployment on Dreamhost?
Does anyone have any experience with production deployment of RoR on
Dreamhost? Is it now stable enough? Any tips and tricks?
Thanks a lot,
Tom

Lighttpd now works for production. Development is broken?
I''ve finally gotten lighttpd working for my production instance (SUSE
10.0 with SSL).
(Had to install the fcgi dev toolkit, the SUSE 10 ruby-fcgi rpm, and
the fcgi gem. I''m not positive all 3 were required, but that is what
I did.)
Now the devel instance of my app is broken.
I''m not sure how to fix it.
Previously I was using WEBrick for both devel and production.

basic ''find'' question
I am struggling to understand the methodology here...
I have a find.rhtml
<%= start_form_tag :action => ''list2'', :first_name = client %>
<%# render :partial => ''form'' %>
<p><label for="client_first_name">First name</label><br/>

App running fine on Webrick, ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished in lighttpd
My app runs fine on webrick, but I get a
ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished when I try to run it on
lighttpd. Here''s the app''s lighttpd config:
$HTTP["host"] =~ "(www\.)?mysite\.com" {
server.document-root = "/home/pergesuteore/public/"
server.error-handler-404 = "/dispatch.fcgi"
fastcgi.server = ( ".fcgi" =>

Lighttpd Restart Script
After quite a bit of searching and coding, I customized an init.d/bash
script which allows me to manage multiple instances of Lighttpd server
running Rails.
It targets the specific PID address instead of the default binary location
when starting and stopping /usr/local/bin/lighttpd process.
This provides the ability in my case to have multiple lighttpd.conf files
running many different instances

Rails app lags after inactivity
Hi all. I have two Rails applications. Each is on its own VPS hosted by
Pipespring (excellent service btw).
My app runs lightning quick - AFTER the first load. If I visit my site after
a period of inactivity (i.e. no visitors to my site), it takes up to 10
seconds to load that first time. After that I can hop around with no
problems.
Has anyone run into this before? Ideas?

How about a forked session supervisor in dispatch.fcgi?
I was talking to a friend of mine who''s developing PHP on trax and we
came up with a solution to the ruby session file problem. I''m not
sure if this idea has come up before, so I wanted to run it by
everyone before making any code contributations and/or talking to the
Rails core about it.
It seems to me that the current situation we''re in with regard to

Basic question: Where to initialize a flag?
I have found that if I initialize a flag in my controller (under def
Initialize), it appears everytime I call a controller action, the flag
is set to the initialize value (even though I''m not calling the
initialized action). Am I observing this clearly?
I don''t think I should initialize a flag in the index file. So where?
Specifically, I want to know if this action is a

Rails URLs always try to open non-existent files
The lighttpd config file is set up like this...
Rails url: //host/controller/method/id
Lighttpd tries to open the file ''controller/method/id'' from the document root.
Of course this doesn''t work and generates an error 404
This gets caught with: server.error-handler-404 = "/dispatch.fcgi"
Which turns the request into "/dispatch.fcgi"
That gets caught

Enterprise Rails Apps
Is there a place I can get a list of "enterprise" Rails applications?
Apparently, even though I''ve looked at the wiki and cited the examples
there, there are some at my organization who still can''t find proof that
Rails is usable in an enterprise setting.
Would you fine folks be able to tell me about some large-scale projects
that could be classified as

switchtower, windows and dispatch.fcgi
I just setup switchtower and I am very happy with it. Just one thing is
giving me some headache: My development machine is windows and my deployment
host is Unix. Each time I deploy I need to make dispatch.fcgi executable. I
wrote my own task for that. But does there exist any smarter way to get this
automated ? I think Subversion offers some possiblity to declare a file as
executable, but no idea

Idle Apache+FastCGI sleeping?
Wondering: Does Apache shut down inactive FastCGI processes if it
doesn''t get any requests for a while? My app works fine if it''s being
used regularly, but it will respond very slowly to the first request
after an hour of zero traffic.
Is there a way to keep FastCGI ready all the time, even when there
haven''t been any requests for a while? We''re deploying
