shapiro.test() output
R Users: My question is probably more about elementary statistics than the mechanics of using R, but I've been dabbling in R (version 2.2.0) and used it recently to test some data . I have a relatively small set of observations (n = 12) of arsenic concentrations in background groundwater and wanted to test my assumption of normality. I used the Shapiro-Wilk test (by calling shapiro.test()

R Users: ...been working with the sp and gstat packages for the past couple of days in an effort to analyze a set of ~ 200 soil samples collected from various eastings, northings, and depths and containing a wide range of measured hydrocarbon concentrations. Thus far, I've managed to import the data, log-transform the concentrations, assign coordinates, generate and fit a variogram model and

basic dataframe question
R Users: I'm wondering: Why does my logical vector becomes a numeric vector when stuffed into a data frame? How do I change this so that it's retained as a logical data type? I've tried a couple of things but to no avail. Here's my example code: # Exercise 4-1 in Non-Detects and Data Analysis. Dennis Helsel. 2005. # "Create two new variables in the Interval Endpoints

bar and line plot
Hello All: Using the below dataset how can I make a barplot with Date(X) and NumEggs(Y) by Site. Then plot Temp(lineplot) It seems really simple, but I am having a hard time trying to do it by Site. Summary of data for each year
Hello All, I have a data with two columns. In one column it is date and in another column it is flow data. I was able to read the data as date and flow data. I used the following code: creek <- read.csv("creek.csv") library(ggplot2) creek[1:10,] colnames(creek) <- c("date","flow") creek$date <- as.Date(creek$date, "%m/%d/%Y") The link to my data

Verbose messaging about why public key auth was rejected
I had a small battle with public key authentication today at the end of which I realized that the problem was the permissions on my home directory (previously I though ~/.ssh was all that mattered. You learn something new every day!). While I was trying to track this problem down, I used ssh -v and sshd -ddd to get as much information as possible about why my public key wasn't

Function that is giving me a headache- any help appreciated (automatic read )
note: whole function is below- I am sure I am doing something silly. when I use it like USGS(input="precipitation") it is choking on the precip.1 <- subset(DF, precipitation!="NA") b <- ddply(precip.1$precipitation, .(precip.1$gauge_name), cumsum) DF.precip <- precip.1 DF.precip$precipitation <- b$.data part, but runs fine outside of the function: days=7

Two y-axes boxplot
I am aware of the inherent risks of having plots with more than two axes, but I am trying to produce the graphs that I have been tasked with. That being said I am having a hard time figuring out how to have two axes onto a boxplot. below is the sample code. I would like BC on the plot produced with this code to be on a second axis with all of the others being on the first axis. This will be

Nut issue or MGE issue?
Hi, I took the advice of Daniel O'Connor, found out what variables I had available to me, and put them in the conf. So now it looks like : [ellipse] driver = mge-shut port = /dev/cuaa0 desc = "UPS" lowbatt = 5 offdelay = 120 let the UPS charge up fully, 24 hours. I plugged a single lamp into it, with a 60W bulb. At 3:40p

read.table error
R experts, I am working with a fairly large data set comprised of 563 rows by 116 columns including several different modes. I have been unable to read in the data set completely using the read.table function and the RGui (i.e. nearly half the total number of rows are missing from the data set along with the column names). The data does read in fully using Tinn-R's Rterm; however, at several

help me....
Life times of one brand of light bulb were observed. Life hours of nine light bulbs were 898, 720, 354, 405, 620, 54, 229, 306, 890. There were three more light bulbs that were still burning after 1000 hours. It is common to assume the life time of a light bulb follows an exponential distribution. With the observed data find the MLE of the parameter of the exponential distribution with EM

sqlFetch and factor conversion
R users, Hello, I used sqlFetch to import a data table from MS Access 2007 and I set as.is = TRUE to prevent character vectors from becoming factors. However, I can't figure out how to prevent the $ operator from being added by sqlFetch to the end of each character vector(e.g. TD$ and SITE$). This causes subsequent parts of my code not to work and also results in some behavior that I

patch to add built-in support for port knocking
All, A friend gave me access to an svn(+ssh) repository the other day, and told me that I needed to do some port knocking to open up ssh. It occurred to me that it would be extremely convenient if I could add a "knock" configuration option for the host to my ~/.ssh/config file and never think about this again (rather than creating a shell script to accomplish this behavior,

choosing between Poisson regression models: no interactions vs. interactions
R gurus, I'm working on data analysis for a small project. My response variable is total vines per tree (median = 0, mean = 1.65, min = 0, max = 24). My predictors are two categorical variables (four sites and four species) and one continuous (tree diameter at breast height (DBH)). The main question I'm attempting to answer is whether or not the species identity of a tree has

for loop for automatic pdf generation
I know this is not reproducible, but I don't want to clog up mail boxes with the data frame. I would be happy to send this off list. I am sure that I am missing something simple. The plotting works if I just paste the call to qplot into R and replace the [i] with a number. Thanks for all of your help in advance. #loop to spit out PDFs list.names <-

Questions about Eaton 5E 1, 100W 2, 200VA 6-Outlet UPS
I can't seem to get the longer battery tests to actually run: test.battery.start test.battery.start.deep Both appear to leave the battery voltage at line-power levels; while the quick test does have a notable voltage delta. Are there any other tests I can perform or ways that I can help gather data to get the longer tests supported? I borrowed a 60W light bulb (instead of one of the

Ternary Plots Do Not Display Ellipses in PDF
A rather strange situation here and I've not found the source of the problem. The point is to print a ternary plot matrix of compositional data with ellipses enclosing 95% of the variance in each plot. The ellipses display on the monitor, dev = x11cairo (see attached winters-x11cairo.pdf), but not when sent directly to a file, dev = pdf (see attached winters-pdf.pdf). Here's
