Strange labels on plot with dates
Hello fellow R people, I don't understand the default behavior of the axis labeling when plotting dates. I would expect something like 2001, 2002 or possibly Jan 01, Jan 02...Jan 06, but instead I only see Jan 01, Jan 01, Jan 01.... See the following example startdate <- strptime("2001-01-01",format="%Y-%m-%d") enddate <-

Get "home" directory and simple I/O
Is there any generic function that gets the "home" directory? This should return /home/<user> in Linux and x:/Documents and Settings/<user> (or whatever) in Windows XP. Another (unrelated) question: what is the _simplest_ way to read and write R variables to/from files such that they are stored in a human-readable but R-like form? For example, if (say), x is a vector

combine variables to matrix
I just got stuck with a quite simple question. I've just read in an ASCII table from a plain text file with read.table(). It's a 1200x1200 table. R has assigned variables for each column: V1,V2,V3,V4,... For small data sets data <- read.table("data.txt"); data.matrix <- cbind(V1,V2,V3); works. But how could I put together 1200 columns? I've searched the R mailing

Hi, my emails are processed using procmail and stored the following way: /home/ajung/Maildir/new|cur|tmp /home/ajung/Maildir/Plone|new|cur|tmp /home/ajung/Maildir/Python|new|cur|tmp When I fetch my mail using fetchmail I can only get the mails from "Maildir". However I can not access other folders like "Plone" or "Python" (using fetchmail -r Plone). I tried

how do you interpolate a gaussian grid to a standard 2.5 degree grid?
Dear R-help community, I have looked on the R search site and archives but cannot find mention of a way of interpolating a gaussian distribution of data to a standard 2.5 degree grid. I have two global dataset and I need to correlate - unfortunately one is a 2.5 degree grid dim[longitude=144,latitude=72] and one is gaussian dim[longitude=192,latitude=94]. I would rally appreciate hearing

X11 uses font size 25 although 28 was requested
Hi, I'm not sure if the real English warning is the same. I translated it from German. R came up with the following message: ------------------------------------------------------- Warning message: In title(main = sinc.exp) : X11 nutzt Schriftgr??e 25 obwohl 28 angefordert war [engl.: X11 uses font size 25 although 28 was requested] -------------------------------------------------------

Can not boot Dom0 when using Anthony's new XenARM source for Arndale.
Hi Xen Developers, I had tested new XenARM for Arndale board that is updated in Anthony''s tree from 2 days ago. I expected that will be working. But, I can not boot Dom0 Kernel. I used kernel and XenARM both are from Xen Wiki(http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Xen_ARM_with_Virtualization_Extensions/Arndale). It (seems) stopped after "(XEN) Freed 212kB init memory" message. When I

permissions bug w/ --backup-dir or --backup option?
Running rsync 2.4.7pre1, using the --backup-dir option, I just realized today that file ownerships and permissions of backed up files are not preserved. In other words, if rsync moves an obsolete file to the backup dir, it's ownership seems to revert to root:root, and permissions change, as well. We are also using the -a (archive) option, by the way, which should mean "preserve

High load on Squid server after change from reiserfs to ext3
We are running Zope behind Squid 2.4Stable6 with squid in acceleration mode. The squid box (dual Pentium III 1 GHz, RH 7.2, Linux 2.4.9-21smp, 2GB Ram) has during busy hours a normal load of 0.2-0.3 . From time to time we see spikes over some hours where the load average of the machine is higher than 1.5 although there are no spikes in the CPU utilization. Also there is no increase in the number

How to get the most frequent value of the subgroup
Dear Members of the R-Help, While using a R function - 'aggregate' that you developed, I become to have a question. In that function, > aggregate(x, by, FUN, ..., simplify = TRUE) I was wondering about what type of FUN I should write if I want to get "the most frequent value of the subgroup" as a summary statistics of the subgroups. I will appreciate if I can get

cygwin rsync performance and bandwidth between two w2003 servers
I have two Windows 2003 Standard Edition Server with 2x 3,0 GHz P4 and 4 GB RAM. On each server rsync runs as cygwin daemon (rsync version 2.6.6; protocol version 29). The two servers are connected through a 2 MBit VPN link. When I sync a single large file or a whole directory, rsync only uses 50% of the available bandwidth. When I do the same between windows and linux server, rsync takes the
