Packages in R for least median squares regression and computing outliers (thompson tau technique etc.)
Hi I am looking for suitable packages in R that do regression analyses using least median squares method (or better). Additionally, I am also looking for packages that implement algorithms/methods for detecting outliers that can be discarded before doing the regression analyses. Although some websites refer to "lms" method under package "lps" in R, I am unable to find such a

unique/subset problem
Hi I am new to R programming and am using subset to extract part of a data as follows names(dataset) = c("genome1","genome2","dist","score"); prunedrelatives <- subset(dataset, score < -5); However when I use unique to find the number of unique genomes now present in prunedrelatives I get results identical to calling unique(dataset$genome1) although

how much performance penalty does this incur, scalar as a vector of one element?
I have been comparing R with other languages and systems. One peculiar feature of R is there is no scalar. Instead, it is just a vector of length one. I wondered how much performance penalty this deign cause, particular in situations with many scalars in a program. Thanks. PXE booting ISO images with ISOLINUX
I am trying to PXE boot an ISO image using ISOLINUX. I am starting small just trying to get anything working but seem to be having problems. I followed the instructions on the isolinux page (http://syslinux.zytor.com/iso.php) but still cannot get it to work. I can get the ISO image to try to load but then it stops at the booting message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is

fitting the gamma cumulative distribution function
Hi. I have a vector of quantiles and a vector of probabilites that, when plotted, look very like the gamma cumulative distribution function. I can guess some shape and scale parameters that give a similar result, but I'd rather let the parameters be estimated. Is there a direct way to do this in R? Thanks, Tim. week <- c(0,5,6,7,9,11,14,19,39) fraction <-

Bizzare behaviour of Samba+ADS - help needed
I have samba+ads working fine *HOWEVER* when I run net ads keytab create it fails. Using -d 10 the debug output says it cannot write to the file. This is truly bizarre as I am running this as root! e.g. # /usr/local/opt/samba/samba-3.0.24/bin/net ads keytab create ; echo $? 183 And /usr/local/opt/samba/samba-3.0.24/bin/net -d 10 ads keytab create ; echo $? Gives [..snip..] ads_get_kvno:

Unable to join domain: FAIDHC01SDCG0402
Hi. I am trying to configure Samba in Domain security mode. I am on a Sun box running Solaris 9 and Samba 3.0.23. A computer account for this Unix Box is configured in the AD Domain (FAFIDDOM) but I am having issues running net rpc join. I am not planning to use winbind as the samba shares that I want to create are going to be used by ClearCase (Rational Configuration Management Tool). ClearCase

Problem decoding .flac files
I've been having problems with Amarok and K3B, but I think it comes down to a problem with flac. All my music and audio files are encoded in flac format. I've ripped my CDs using KAudioCreator and using this command to encode them (split for formatting): flac --best -o %o --tag=Artist=%{artist} --tag=Album=%{albumtitle} --tag=Date=%{year} --tag=Title=%{title}

Working with large matrix
Dear All, I have large matrix (46000 x 11250). I would like to do the linear regression for each row. I wrote a simple function that has lm() and used apply(mat,1,func). The issue is that it takes ages to load the file and also to finish the lm. I am using LINUX 64 bit with 32G mem. Is there an elegant and fast way of completing this task? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Ezhil

exces return by mktcap decile for each year
I have a data frame, lets call it dat, with 3 columns ( mc, yr, ret) which represent market cap, year, and return. mc is a factor, mc, and ret are real numbers. I want to add a column to the data calculated as follows. For each year, I want to split the data by mc decile, then calculate the mean ret within that mc decile, and finally subtract that year's decile mean from the raw return. Then

categorical column to numeric column
Hi R, Let 'dd' be a data frame given as: dd=data.frame(aa=c("a","a","b","a","b","b"),bb=c(1,1,1,2,3,4)) Now I want to create a column 'g' such that if dd$aa=a then dd$g=1 else dd$g= -1 . So, I gave the below syntax: if((dd$aa)=="a") dd$g=1 else dd$g= -1 But I get the error message as:

[PATCH 0/5] Debian patches for 1.1.3
Hi Josh, Here are all the patches that are currently applied to the Debian packages for flac. You may disagree with some of them but as the current maintainer, I'm submitting them all for your consideration. (I should've submitted them earlier, but I've been quite busy. Sorry!) Here is a listing of the patches that I'll be sending: Patch 1 fixes a simple typo in metaflac

creating a path diagram in sem
Hello, I finally run my measurement model in sem - successfully. Now, I am trying to print out the path diagram that is based on the results - but for some reason it's not working. Below is my script - but the problem is probably in my very last line: # ANALYSIS OF ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND FEAR - LISREL P.31 library(sem) # Creating the ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND FEAR intercorrelation matrix

false discovery rate !
Dear All, It is not a typical R question (though I use R for this) but I thought someone will help me. For the list of P values, I have calculated FDR using p.adjust() in R (bioconductor). But my FDR values are same for all the P values. When do we get same FDR values? Does the smallest P values should less than 1/N? (where N is the number of P values) Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Ezhil

Compiling wine in Ubuntu Oneiric
Hello, I'm having trouble compiling wine 1.3.31 under the latest Ubuntu, 64 bit multiarch, etc. What basically happens is that the compile and make steps go just fine, but any sound that the newly built wine makes, doesn't use PulseAudio, it takes over the sound device. The only thing I've got to go on is a warning when doing ./configure that tells me that I'm missing the 32 bit
