Emacs & ESS under Windows
After the discussions about appropriate editors under Windows to use with
R, I have managed to install Emacs, XEmacs, and ESS under WinNT 4.0, and
these work fine. It's not necessary to compile anything to use R with ESS,
just to install Emacs and ESS, and do a few modifications in some files.
XEmacs is also easy to install but apparently ESS cannot run with it

Emacs ESS finding all versions of R
Dear R-help,
Apologies if this isn't exactly the right place for this question.
I am trying to run R in emacs using ESS. I have done this
successfully many times - it works right now on my home computer in
windows 7 and in ubuntu.
The problem is that when I start emacs the regular splash screen
doesn't show. In the mini-buffer I get the message "Finding all
versions of R on your

R grahics: Save as hangs computer
Hello list,
I have encountered a problem trying to save graphs using the R-graphics
menu: File|Save as. The menu suggests that files may be saved as either
Metafile, Postscript, pdf, png, bmp, jpeg.
When I specify any of those file formats a menu comes up requesting a file
name. After providing a name R invariably hangs and has to be restarted.
I am able to save files under the various

Installing ESS under EMACS
Dear members,
I have spent some time to make clear how I could write R programs from within EMACS using the ESS package, under Win98. Unfortunately, I have found this not quite clear for Windows 98 (though a lot of details are provided for UNIX).
I have tried to create a .emacs file with a command such as (load "PATH/ess-site.el") and also added a "PATH=...\rw1010\" line in

R run under Emacs fatal errors halt execution
I am running R.exe/Rterm.exe 2.7.1 under Emacs 22.1 under the DOS
shell under Windows XP. (My Cygwin installation is broken!) I am not
currently using ESS:

R version 2.7.1 ...

running R inside of e-macs
I can''t start r inside of emacs. When I try it says that it cannot find .Rhistory and then it says " This program ( pressumably Rterm) has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.". How can I fix this problem?

r-mode (ESS/XEmacs)
Hello,
please excuse me if this is not the appropriate
mailing list, but I'll give it a try!
I recently switched from using Emacs 20.7.1 to
XEmacs 21.4, both on cygwin / MS W2K.
On Emacs the ESS 5.1.17 was working well, but
now, when calling R from within XEmacs,
it first asks for the working directory,
then says "R process is not running".
The ESS buffer holds the

ess in Windows (newbie Q)
I'm a rank beginner with R, and I'm stumped at how to get it to work
with Xemacs under Windows XP. I'm afraid there are some VERY basic
questions I have here. Yes, I did read
http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/readme.html.
Both R and Xemacs are installed and working. The current ess files are
installed in a subdirectory of my Xemacs directory. I added the R bin
directory to my

rterm not shutting down from ESS on Win32
I've been having problems with Rterm.exe not shutting down when I exit an R
(1.7.0 and 1.7.1) session from within emacs when using ESS. I've just
upgraded to 5.1.24 and still have the same problems. I'm running ntemacs and
winxp. I don't recall having these troubles with version 1.6.2 of R.

Fancy quotes on Windows
Hi,
I don't use Windows as my primary OS anymore, so didn't notice this
until recently. In R-2.10.0 under Windows useFancyQuotes is FALSE by
default, but this doesn't seem to affect the rendering of (text) help pages.
This is not a problem if I run via the Rgui or Rterm (via DOS prompt),
as the help pages are rendered in a popup window that understands
directional quotes.

Help with Help on Windows
R 2.15.2 installed as a regular user on Windows 7.
Three issues:
1. There is a start menu item for "R 2.15.2 Help" that opens a local web
page. If I click on packages, then base, then abbreviate I get
"Firefox can't find the file at
/C:/Users/rdboylan/Documents/R/R-2.15.2/library/base/html/abbreviate.html."

rterm.exe and graphics windows
I have started using R 1.5.0 on Windows 2000. The refinement of this system
in such a short time is astounding, and I thank those who have worked on it
and made it available!
I have been using rterm.exe to develop R scripts in my preferred editor
(not emacs) by sending the command
rterm.exe --save < %f
where the editor substitutes the filename for %f. This works wonderfully,
and the

Use Rterm in rxvt for Cygwin?
Dear R users,
Does anyone notice that Rterm.exe does not work well with rxvt.exe,
an xterm emulator for Cygwin? It produces an error message window
with the following message:
This program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor
It also prints "Signal 127" in rxvt window.
Rterm --ess, however, works.

Strange behaviour when running R from within Emacs on Winddows

I run R in a shell under Emacs on Win2k using ESS. I get the following strange error

CPU usage on Windows
I'm using R with emacs & ESS on Windows. When I create a plot, sometimes R
will seem to get stuck in a busy loop, i.e. it will use 100% of my CPU.
However the system is still somewhat responsive, and the problem usually
goes away if I create a new device with windows(). If I then close this
device, making the first device active again, sometimes R will get stuck in
the busy loop again.

R and DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange)
R and DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange)
Dear Rusers,
I run an application (not mine) which acts as a DDE server.
I would like to use R to get data from this application,
say once per minute, and do some processing on it.
I didn't find much info on the R DDE abilities, apart the tcltk2
package in which I will try to go deeper.
I would be very thankful for any info, pointer or advice about the
