new to R: don't understand errors
Hello all,
I'm brand new to the use of R, and I'm trying to quickly learning the
rudiments for a couple of projects here at work. I'm working with the
lsa package and trying to generate various semantic spaces. I seem to do
well with small collections of clean text files, but now that I am
trying to work with larger collections of less than perfection files,
I'm getting errors

configure help
Hello,
as I just spent a (too long) while searching
for a way how to persistantly switch back the help display
routines from chm to text, here a small documentation
how to do that with the windows version of R.
The windows installer asks which help type
you want to use, I wanted to test the chm
version -- which I didn't like.
If you after installation want to switch back,

Problem with a if statement inside a function
I have a really long functions, and at the end of the function, I am using a
if statement
to tag certain keywords based on whether they have certain values contained
in them.
However, the if statement doesn't seem to work.
When I had split up the commands into various functions, it worked fine, but
I'm not sure
what going on now that it's combined into a single function.

Customised legend in lattice
Hi List,
Am trying to customize a legend in trellis: Draws 2x5 lines in 5 colors and
2 linetypes. I would like to add two more items to the legend showing the
key for the line types above the colored legend.
Any suggestions welcome - thanks Herry

R integration with Microsoft Powerpoint
Please allow me an unusual question.
Is there any way that R can be closely integrated with a Microsoft
Powerpoint presentation? I would like to embed R calculations in
Powerpoint so that I will start Powerpoint, be prompted to enter some
parameters, and an R function will run and return values and graphs.
Thanks,
John

FIML with missing data in sem package
Is there a way to use full information maximum likelihood (FIML) to
estimate missing data in the sem package? For example, suppose I have a
dataset with complete information on X1-X3, but missing data (MAR) on X4.
Is there a way to use FIML in this case? I know lavaan and openmx allow you
to do it, but I couldn't find anything in the documentation for the sem
package. Thanks!

Deploying My Rails App
I have just finished my first Rails application following the
lynda.com tutorial, but I am not sure how to get my application on the
internet.
I have an ftp account through the applemachine server, but from what I
have read, I''m afraid I will not be able to host my application there.
What I am looking for is step by step directions on how to get from a

Combined Marimekko/heatmap
Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out a way to create a data graphic that I haven't ever seen an example of before, but hopefully there's an R package out there for it. The idea is to essentially create a heatmap, but to allow each column and/or row to be a different width, rather than having uniform column and row height. This is sort of like a Marimekko chart in appearance, except that

Smp kernel on up machine???
Can anyone tell me if there has been testing of using an SMP kernel on a UP
machine and if that is bad? I have an ext3 filesystem that keeps getting
corrupt. Certain directories only get I/O errors, trying to access beyond
the end of the device.
Thanks,

feedback on a few ActiveSupport::Multibyte patches
Hi all,
In response to Rodrigo Rosas''s message about mb_chars.upcase not
giving the expected result on 1.9, I''ve done some work in a fork to
make String#mb_chars always return an instance of a proxy class, both
with Ruby 1.8 and Ruby 1.9. The end result of the patch is
(hopefully) to make Rails'' multibyte functionality behave the same way
in 1.8.7 and 1.9.x.

problem with simple if() statement
the following code apprantely, for some grand old reason, induces a syntax error:
if (seq[i] = "A") m <- trans[1,]
where seq is a vector and trans is a matrix. I cannot for the life of me see why this is wrong. Syntax error is:
Error: syntax error in "if (seq[i] ="

sorting during xtabs? sorting by "individual" order?
Hey alltogether,
refacturing a package (before it will be released),
I ran across the following problem.
I have two directories with different text files,
I want to read the first and construct a document-term
matrix from it (every term=word in a row, every file in
a column, occurrence frequencies form the values).
The second directory contains different files. It
needs to be read in to also
