using "integrate" in a function definition
Dear list members, I'm quite new to R, and though I tried to find the answer to my probably very basic question through the available resources (website, mailing list archives, docs, google), I've not found it. If I try to use the "integrate" function from within my own functions, my functions seem to misbehave in some contexts. The following example is a bit silly, but

Can't connect to samba from foreign network --- 'Gethostbyaddr failed' error in log.smb
I have a samba server at ip address aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd I can connect to it from clients on subnets aaa.bbb.eee. and aaa.bbb.fff. I can't connect to it from clients on ggg.hhh. smb.conf has hosts deny = all hosts allow = localhost, aaa.bbb., ggg.hhh. The client can successfully 'ping mysambaserver' (resolves to aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd). Doing 'net view \\mysambaserver' fails with

dotplot as a background for multiple barchart plots (with Lattice)
Hi R users, I'm kind stuck in my R experience... I want to have a multiple barchart with n windows, but with the same background for each window, and I want that background to be a recorded dotplot. First, is it possible ? If so, I guess I have to call a record plot in the panel function but how ? As there is no panel.plot and I can't use the recorded plot as an argument for the

Boxplot Help for Neophyte
R helpers I am getting to grips with R but came across a small problem today that I could not fix by myself. I have 3 text files, each with a single column of data. I read them in using: myData1<-scan("C:/Program Files/R/myData1.txt") myData2<-scan("C:/Program Files/R/myData2.txt") myData3<-scan("C:/Program Files/R/myData3.txt") I wanted to produce a

Read.table - Less rows than original data
Dear all, I have problem when reading a table into R. The total row of read in table has is much less than the original saved table. I built a 1,273,230 by 6 data set named "mydata2", it was saved in the following command, write.table(mydata2, "mydata2.txt", row.name=F,col.name=T,quote=F,sep="\t") The next day I read in above saved text file into R,

How to create a data.frame "like" another, but longer?
Hello, does anyone know of a quick way to create a data frame "like" another, but with more rows? What I'd like to do is this: if mydata is a data.frame like a b c 1 TRUE yes 2 FALSE no 3 TRUE yes I'd like to get mydata2 with the same column names and column types, but without the values and with more rows. All I could think of was to manually do

Very good. See https://doc.dovecot.org/configuration_manual/authentication/passwd_file/ You can add the "user" field as an "extra field" In users.auth, just add in the end "user=bbbb-ccc at ddd.example.com" to match the respective entry in /etc/dovecot/users Good luck! Updating R version
A quick question. I am trying to understand how I could move the installed packages in my R 2.3 version to the newly installed R 2.5 version, without having to install all the packages again. I copied the files under the old library subdirectory to the new library subdirectory. But still the newer version is not recognizing the packages that were copied over. Thanks. Using apply for two datasets
I can run one-sample t-test on an array, for example a matrix myData1, with the following apply(myData1, 2, t.test) Is there a similar fashion using apply() or something else to run 2-sample t-test with datasets from two groups, myData1 and myData2, without looping? TIA, Gang

initalizing and checking validity of S4 classes
Dear useRs and wizaRds, I am currently developing a set of functions using S4 classes. On the way I encountered the problem exemplified with the code below. For some reason the 'validity' method does not seem to work, i.e. does not check for errors in the specification of the slots of the defined class. Any hints? My understanding of the whole S4 system was that validity checks are made

problem with hist() for 'times' objects from 'chron' package
Hello dear useRs and wizaRds, I encountered the following problem using the hist() method for the 'times' classes from package 'chron'. You should be able to recreate it using the code: library(chron) # pasted from chron help file (?chron) dts <- dates(c("02/27/92", "02/27/92", "01/14/92", "02/28/92", "02/01/92")) class(dts)

deparse, substitute and S4 generics
Hello everyone, I encountered the following confusing behavior of 'deparse' and 'substitute' while programming with S4 classes (see example below). It seems like the presence of '...' argument in the definition of the generic generates the problem. I have no clue why, can anyone explain that to me? Are there any "workarounds"? Thanks a lot for your time!
