Constrained least squares
Is there a function in R for constrained linear least squares?
I used the matlab function LSQLIN: my aim is to obtain
non-negative regression coefficients which sum 1.
Thanks in advance,
domenico vistocco

lpSolve and mixed signs
Hi R People:
If you have a linear programming problem in which
some of the constraints have the "<=", some
have ">=" and some have "=", all in the same problem,
should the solver work?
I'm having trouble with that. Any help much appreciated!
Sincerely,
Erin Hodgess

In CentOS 4.1/2, what package contains this library:

I installed a couple of the compat- packages, but this library is still missing.

correlation coefficient from qq plot
Hi,
I am trying to figure out how to get the correlation coefficient for a
QQ plot (residual plot). So to be more precise, I am creating the plot
like this:
qq.plot(rstudent(regrname), main = rformula, col=1)
But want to also access (or compute) the correlation coefficient for
that plot.
Thanks,
Tom

Inserting a subsequence between values of a vector
Hallo,
suppose I have a vector:
x <- c(1,1,1,2,2,3,3,3,3,3,4)
How can I generate a vector/sequence in which a fixed number of zeroes (say
3) is inserted between the consecutive values, so I get
1,1,1,0,0,0,2,2,0,0,0,3,3,3,3,3,0,0,0,4
thanks a lot,
Serguei

Array dimnames
Dear all,
Possibly a rudimentary question, however any help is greatly appreciated. I
am sorting a large matrix into an array of dim(p(i),q,3). I put each entry
into a corresponding matrix (1 of the 3) based on some criteria. I figure
this will assist me in condensing code as I can loop through the 3rd
dimension of the array instead of generating 3 separate matrices and using
the same block of

Using apply to get group means
Hi all,
I'm trying to improve my R skills and make my programming more efficient and succinct. I can solve the following question, but wonder if there's a better way to do it:
I'm trying to calculate mean by several variables and then put this back into the original data set as a new variable. For example, if I were measuring weight, I might want to have each individual's

C++ streams in shared library in cause R to hang? (linux)
Hello,
I'm using dyn.load() to load in a shared library compiled for R on linux.
The code does quite a bit (DB accesses, C-style file reads/writes) with
no trouble, but hangs when it reaches code that uses C++ streams,
specifically operator>>() and operator<<(). From the debugger output
(below) it seems like it could be __flockfile() related (maybe a deadlock
of some sort?).

Fwd: [bug & patch] libstdc++ in linux_base-7.1_3
Hey guys, hope you don't mind this forward email, because I have been
reading the 'flashpluginwrapper problem.' subject. The bug is in the
linux_base, but nobody seem to check on this in the freebsd-ports. Looks
like Brandon D. Valentine might needs to create a PR to get the better
attention and keep the track.
Cheers,
Mezz

dyn.load() strange behavior
Hello,
I am observing the following strange behavior when I try to
load a shared library using dyn.load() under Linux...
The library foo.so refers to a symbol in another package bar
(with shared library bar.so), I get:
dyn.load('foo.so') # error message because I forgot to load bar
library(bar) # so I fix it
dyn.load('foo.so') # works this time and everything is fine
But, if

Repeated use of dyn.load().
Hello,
In such cases, with C code, I call dyn.unload before loading the
modified shared lib again.
I don't know if this changed recently, but it used to be needed or else
R wouldn't load the new lib. When I call dyn.unload followed by dyn.load
I never had problems.
(Or the other way around, call dyn.unload before modifying the C code.)
Hope this helps,
Rui Barradas
