[R-SIG-Mac] Starting tcltk without Tk
It turns out that the behavior of starting just Tcl was actually a
bug. Apparently the intention was to attempt to start Tk regardless of
the DISPLAY variable, because some TclTk implementation such as Aqua
Tcl/Tk don't require DISPLAY and thus would not be loaded. Due to a
bug (HAVE_AQUA was not included in Rconfig.h before R 2.7.0), though,
this was not the case. I'll leave it

How to remove similar successive objects from a vector?
Is there some (much) more efficient way to do this?
VECTOR=c(3,2,4,5,5,3,3,5,1,6,6);
NEWVECTOR=VECTOR[1];
for(i in 1:(length(VECTOR)-1))
{
if((identical(VECTOR[i], VECTOR[i+1]))==FALSE){
NEWVECTOR=c(NEWVECTOR,VECTOR[i+1])}
}
> VECTOR
[1] 3 2 4 5 5 3 3 5 1 6 6

Antialiasing plots and text on different devices
I have a question about antialiasing when R generates bitmaps. (This follows
a thread on the ggplot2 mailing list.)
I mostly use R on Linux, although I sometimes use it in Mac and Windows as
well. On Linux, I've found that plotting shapes 15-18 via cairo results in
bad-looking output. The points are not antialiased, and they are jagged and
misshapen. Plots generated in Windows also aren't

New R website: R-Cookbook.com
R Community,
I've put together a website that I thought this mailing list might be
interested in: http://www.r-cookbook.com
It's a (free) community-driven content management system for R
"recipes", or working examples. Some of the features of the site are
code highlighting, recipe ratings, recipe comments, personal "recipe
boxes" to save your favorite

Lazy loading... advices
Hello,
I am looking for more information about lazy loading introduced in R 2.0.0.
Doing
?lazyLoad
I got some and there is a 'see also' section that points to
'makeLazyLoading'... But I cannot reach this page.
My problem is: I recompiled a library that uses a lot of functions from
other libraries (of course I can give details if needed). I load it in my
computer: library(svGUI),

Does anybody know if there is somewhere in R a function to calculate the

Using tcltk to display jpeg images
Dear R Helpers,
Does anyone know how to use tcltk to display jpeg images? The manual says
that
one must use Tk_PhotoCreateImageFormat to register the jpeg image handler.
The
"ActiveTcl User Guide"
(http://support.serv.ch/lang/tcl/img/doc/img-jpeg.html)
says:-
"The package img::jpeg is a sub-package of Img. It can be loaded as a part
of the complete

HTML search & Firefox
Hello,
Sorry if this question was already asked (I though it was... but did not
found the exact answer in the archives).
I use R 2.2.0 and just updated to Firefox 1.5 (note that I already got
the same result with Firefox 1.x.x) under Win XP sp2 US (full details of
my config hereunder). When I try to use the HTML help search page, I can

t-test bootstrap versus permutation question
Hi,
I have a little problem that puzzles me about contradictory results returned
by a bootstraped t-test (as in MASS 3rd ed p. 146) versus a permutation
t-test (as in MASS 3rd ed, p 147).
Data are measurements done on 100 cells in 9 slides of fish blood. With one
method, cells are randomly sampled, and with the other method, the operator
selects cells arbitrarily (in a way it is done usually

nls, nlrq, and box-cox transformation
Dear r-help members
I posted this message already yesterday, but don't know whether it
reached you since I joined the group only yesterday.
I would like to estimate the boxcox transformed model
(y^t - 1)/t ~ b0 + b1 * x.
Unfortunately, R returns with an error message when I try to
perform this with the call
nls( I((y^t - 1)/t) ~ I(b0 + b1*x),
start = c(t=1,b0=0,b1=0), data = mydataframe)

assignment in lists
Hello,
I do not understand the following behaviour. Could someone explain me what
happens?
> a <- NULL
> a$item <- 1:3
> a$item
[1] 1 2 3
> rm(a)
> a <- NULL
> a[["item"]] <- 1:3
Error: more elements supplied than there are to replace
Why do I get an error message using list[["item"]], and not using list$item?

Cross-platforms solution to export R graphs
Hello Rusers,
I have worked on a R Wiki page for solutions in exporting R graphs,
especially, the often-asked questions:
- How can I export R graphs in vectorized format (EMF) for inclusion in
MS Word or OpenOffice outside of Windows?
- What is the best solution(s) for post-editing/annotating R graphs.
The page is at:

New version of benchmark comparing R with other software
Hello,
Thanks to Douglas Bates, there is now a new benchmark suite (version 2.3)
which is compatible with R 1.9.0 and the recent Matrix library (0.8-1 or
above). You find it at http://www.sciviews.org/other/benchmark.htm. It
compares R 1.9.0 under Windows with:
S-PLUS 6.5, Matlab 6.0, O-Matrix 5.6, Octave 2.1.42, Scilab 2.7 and Ox 3.30.
In short, R in its version 1.9.0 and with the new Matrix

R version 2.01.1, Crimson Editor and the "one" from nowhere
Dear List....
sorry to bother you R-gurus with such an "unstatistical" question... but
I face a problem using Crimson Editor with R 2.01.1 that I never had
using R 2.00.1.
I already posted on the Crimson Editor forum but it seems to be VERY few
R-users there....
I successfully used R v2.00.1until now (under Windows XP professionnal,
version 2002, Service Pack 2, P4 processor CPU 1.8

core statistical problems). But I could not find how to make a simple
