minimize white space around lattice plot
Dear list, I'm trying to produce a plot via xyplot with minimal sourounding white space. However, I cannot find the options in xyplot, ps.options or wherever which prevents lattice from drawing quite some white space around my plot. However, this is quite a problem for me as I want to produce an inset plot inside another lattice-plot. I'm using the panel function to open a viewport and

Apparent different in symbol scaling between xyplot and grid.points
Dear R-users, For the past few days, I have been trying to find the reason why some of my plots were showing symbols of different sizes, while I thought I was using the same .cex arguments everywhere. The problem is exemplified by the following example code where the xyplot and grid.points functions are used. The scaling factor is set to 0.84 in both the functions settings, but one can see

new versions of grid and lattice
Hi There are new versions of the grid and lattice packages on CRAN: grid 0.2 and lattice 0.3-0 These packages are still _under development_ (they are in CRAN/src/contrib/Devel) There have been some bug fixes and, especially in lattice, there are lots of new features. Descriptions of the changes are included below. If you have any grid code, it may break under the new version because of a

Lattice device page options-margins
I am using lattice to make figures as pdfs: trellis.device(device = "pdf",file = "Figure6.pdf",color = FALSE) I need to specify some blank space on the left-hand margins (the pages will be bound so we need about 0.5 inch)). I have tried a number of solutions but none seems to work (e.g. par.set). Can this be done when initiating the plotting device? Or is the some other way

Making use of names of viewports (grid)
The following code, though not brilliant, works on an A4 page. It might look odd on other devices of a very different size. =============X8------- cut here ---------------------------- require(grid) wide <- 15 vps <- grid.layout(nrow = 3, ncol = 4, widths = unit(rep(1, 4), rep("null", 4)), heights = unit(c(99, 1, 99),

gridBase and new.page() / grid.newpage()
Hello all, I'm trying to write a function using the gridBase package. I'd like to push several base subplots to a larger plot constructed with grid. However, I'm having trouble getting consistent results when running the function when the plotting window (quartz) is closed, when it is left open and the plot function is repeated to the same window, and when the output is saved to a

grid graphics gpar(fill) argument and jpeg device
Hi everybody, I just notice a strange behaviour of gpar's fill argument when using non-postscript devices: The default of the argument is transparent (according to get.gpar("fill")). So as expected, the following code draws a nice red rectangle in the middle of my X11 or postscript device. pushViewport(viewport(width=0.5, height=0.5)) grid.rect(gp=gpar(fill="red"))

grid layout scaling viewport width based solely on height
Hello all, I'm trying to write a function that produces a main plotting region with several square plots along the right side. Ideally the size of right side plots will scale only with the height of the entire plot, yet never overlap with another secondary plot. The following two snippets get close, however, as I resize the plot horizontally the right side plots (green squares) get smaller

controlling panel.width and panel.height in viewports
Dear all, I'm trying to get a series of lattice levelplots to appear in viewports in a particular way but struggling to exert fine control over their appearence. There are two conditions: (a) I only want the levelplot to appear (I don't want axes, colour key, etc) in the viewport and (b) I want the levelplot to expand to the maximum allowable space in the viewport while observing

Lattice graphics strip labels for shingles
Dear all, back in 2002 Martin Henry H. Stevens wrote (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2002-May/019851.html) > How do I control the text in strips? Specifically, I want to put in the > ranges generated in shingle(x) where x is continuous. with an answer from Deepyan Sarkar (see strip.new towards the end of this message). I assume that the answer worked back then, but I've tried

panel.axis() & grid/lattice settings
Hello, I wish to customize the tick marks and labels of axes in panels produced by high-level lattice functions, namely xyplot. I know I can use the scales argument to specify values for rot, cex, etc. in the top-level call. However, I am interested in determining values for cex and rot based on the current panel / viewport and device. More specifically, I would like to make adjustments when

Grid newbie: aligning & scaling viewports
Oh Knowledgeable Ones: I'm working on a project using grid graphics (for the first time). A toy example is given below, run it simply with >foobar() I am wondering why the pink dot and concentric circles are not centered on the 3-color axis system. Further, I feel like the concentric circles don't have the intended radius - if my math is right, the outmost circle should touch the

text length in grid
Hello! I first would like to compliment the authors of grid on what has been a wonderfully useful package for me. Now, my question: Is there any way I can specify the size of some grid.text using grid units? I must label the regions of a plot. The regions can be either very small or very large, so I would like to label each by fitting its text to the size of the region in question. Ideally, I

need for speed on grid.rect
When I use grid.rect to print a multi-coloured grid, it is incredibly slow compared to a single colour grid, or even a two colour grid. I've set out some simplified examples below. This is something I run literally thousands of times a day, so I would greatly appreciate any hints on how I might improve the speed??? library(grid) pushViewport(viewport( width = unit(100,

gradient fill of a grid.polygon
Dear list, Following a recent enquiry, I've been playing with the idea of creating a colour gradient for a polygon, using the Grid package. The idea is to draw a number of stripes of different colours, using the grid.clip function. Below is my current attempt at this, library(grid) rotate.polygon <- function(g, angle=0){ # utility function, works fine matR <- matrix(c(cos(angle),

Viewport and grid.draw
Hi Deepayan and everyone, I need to add a common legend to a group of latice graphs, I have tried different ways using viewport and grid.draw without success. Here is what I have: plot.new() library(grid) library('IDPmisc') print(plot1, split=c(1,1,2,4), more=TRUE) print(plot4, split=c(2,1,2,4), more=TRUE) print(plot2, split=c(1,2,2,4), more=TRUE) print(plot5, split=c(2,2,2,4),

How to set the parameters in Trellis Graphics (by Lattice package)
Dear R users I plot the trellis graphics by using the lattice package. Everything is OK. Now, I want set some parameters of the trellis graphics. 1. The tick label site. By default, only two tick labels had been output in x-axis of my plot. I want output four or five tick labels. In the traditional graphics system, it will be very easy. Just not output the axis in plot by use the parameter

Changing grid defaults
I'm trying to use the vcd package to produce mosaic plots for my class notes, written in Sweave and using the LaTeX's beamer document class. For projecting the notes in class, I use a dark background with light foreground colors. It's easy enough to change the defaults for R's standard graphics to match my color scheme (using the fg, col.axis, col.lab, col.main, and col.sub
