how to create analog stripchart plots of x vs t (t=mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss)
Hello r-experts,
I sure could us a little help.
I have an ever updating text file with timestamped data in it. I can
reformat in anyway I want if need be but currently I have chosen to make
columns of date, time and measuresed value (comma delimeted and with the
dates and times in quotes to interpret them as strings).
Here is a small section of my text data file:

Beginner Hurdles
Hey everyone, I just got Theora running on my Mac, and ran across
several hurdles, that I was wondering if someone could help me with.
I do a lot of tech support at work, and get the same questions over
and over, so I tried skimming the archives but couldn't find the
answers. Maybe these could go in a FAQ of some sort? These are
fairly unavoidable issues that should probably be

2.4-beta fixes for MinGW
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
With these one can build 2.4-beta (AKA 2.3.99.0) with mingw32 (gcc-4.7.0).
Note, however, that win32 subdirectory is:
1) Lacking a complete Makefile.am, so it can't be built with autotools.
2) Depends on MFC, and MFC is not provided by any MinGW toolset (and
MS' MFC is, most likely, highly incompatible with MinGW).
So you only get a console

Stop words, fields, StandardAnalyzer quagmire
Hello,
I''m using: Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 1.2.3, ferret 0.11.4, acts_as_ferret from
svn stable.
I''ve had quite a day wrestling with trying to remove the use of
stopwords. The problem was that when searching for words like "no" or
"the", no results were found. I found a confusing thing behavior that
has taken me some time to figure out, and I hope sharing it

R web interfaces for windows IIS
Hi folks,
can anyone point me to an R add-on package that will work with the
MS-windows IIS server as is?
I know from trying that the "CGIwithR" package was not written with IIS
in mind.
I'm hoping to find package that will work with IIS without having to do
any deep magic.
much obliged :-)

how to order POSIXt objects ?
I have a problem ordering by descending magnitude a POSIXt object. Can
someone help please and let me know how to work around this. My goal is to
be able to order my data by DATE and then by descending TIME.
I have tried to include as much info as possible below. The problem stems
from trying to read in times from a CSV file. I have converted the character
time values to a POSIXt object using the

Finding minimum of time subset
Dear List,
I have a data frame of data taken every few seconds. I would like to subset the data to retain only the data taken on the quarter hour, and as close to the quarter hour as possible. So far I have figured out how to subset the data to the quarter hour, but not how to keep only the minimum time for each quarter hour.
For example:

R^2 for multilevel models
Hi there,
In multiple regression one way to view R^2 is as (the square of) the
correlation between original y's and the estimated y's.
Suppose you fit a multilevel model with random intercept for each
cluster. Would it be valid to compute an R^2 by using fixed effects
plus the group intercepts to reduce the residuals?
I suspect this has been done and, given its absence from the lmer

lattice panel question
Dear R users,
How to change lattice panel label/text from the automatically generated
label (based on the conditioning) to our own set of label?
for example:
someStuff <- data.frame(area = rep(c("SOUTH", "NORTH", "EAST", "WEST"), each
= 25),
group = rep(c("A","B","C","D"), each = 5),

novice questions about programming in "R"
folks,
I have been struggling with the "R" documentation for too long now and
I need a simple answer on two questions. The documentation does not

The time series analysis functions/packages don't seem to like my data
I have hundreds of megabytes of price data time series, and perl
scripts that extract it to tab delimited files (I have C++ programs
that must analyse this data too, so I get Perl to extract it rather
than have multiple connections to the DB).
I can read the data into an R object without any problems.

Residuals for binomial lmer fits
Dear all,
I would like to use the residuals in a general linear mixed effect model
to diagnose model fit.
I know that the resid function has been implemented for linear mixed
models but not yet for general linear mixed effects. Is there a way to
get them out of lmer fit objects?
I tried searching the r-help archive and found nothing.
I tried and failed to replicate what (I guessed would be

Fwd: Windows upssched does not work
Hi,
I have problem with upssched on windows. Upssched is not executed. I
have 2 scripts, 1 for notification in upsmon and second for scheduling
in upssched. Monitoring is working fine, script write to log. I'm
using binary windows installer 2.6.5-6 from NUT.
Here are my configs:

Logistic regression
Dear all,
I am trying to fit a non linear regression model to time series data.
If I do this:
reg.logis = nls(myVar~SSlogis(myTime,Asym,xmid,scal))
I get this error message (translated to English from French):

Adding a vertical line to plot with two overlapping density plots
Hi,
A simple question I hope. I wish to add a single vertical line to a plot
with several density plots.
Here is a simplified example.
############
thedata <- data.frame(x1=rnorm(100,1,1),x2=rnorm(100,3,1)) #create data
thedata.m<-melt(thedata)
densityplot(~value, thedata.m, groups=variable,auto.key=list(columns=2))
#this gives the two density plots

Geometry delaunayn and deldir results, differing results from Octave due to decimal precision?
The problem:
I would like to translate the Octave algorithm in griddata.m to R.
Within the griddata algorithm calls are made to the Delaunay function. For the R translation I have found delaunayn within the "geometry" package and also the deldir package.
Both do similar things but give slightly different results depending on the input.
The question is, what is making the results for the

Problem with mpi.close.Rslaves()
I am running R 2.7.0 on a Suse 9.1 linux cluster with a job scheduler
dispatching jobs and openmpi-1.0.1. I have tried running one of the
examples at http://ace.acadiau.ca/math/ACMMaC/Rmpi/examples.html in Rmpi
and they seem to be working, except mpi.close.Rslaves() hangs. The
slaves are closed, but the master doesn't finish its script. Below is
the example script and the call to R. The job is

I've found and tried the task pull programming method, but even if it is
described as the best method, it seems to cause deadlock, anyone could help
me in using this method?
here is the code I've found and tried:
