difference between ns and bs in predict.glm
I am fittling a spline to a variable in a regression model, I am then using the predict.glm funtion to make some predictions. When I use bs to fit the spline I don't have any problems using the predict.glm function however when I use ns I get the following error: Error in model.frame(formula, rownames, variables, varnames, extras, extranames, : variable lengths differ (found for

interaction term between two categorical variables in ARIMA
hello, I am using arima to evaluate a time series regression model. I am using categorical variables such as day of week(Su-Sa), month(Jan-Dec), and holiday status (1/0) as my independent variables. There is evidence of multiplicative interaction between holiday status and weekday and I would like to add an interaction term to my arima model, but I am not sure about best way to go about doing it.

Pros and Cons of R :GUI
R has very good GUI packages that I have used - R Commander RCmdr and Rattle rattle . Since I work on multiple packages with constraints of time, I almost always use the GUI rather go through the intricacies of command line . The log of these GUIs shows the relevant R command that was used, so you can actually learn the language also. I have written about the ease of learning R , if you begin

Smooth periodic splines
Hello group! Is there a package that allows to fit smooth *periodic* splines to data? I'm interested in a function which combines the functionality of smooth.spline and splines::periodicSpline. Thanks, Andrey

Z aware interpolation
Hello again, There is any package which does Z aware (real 3D) interpolations? It can be any method (IDW, kriging or spline) but it should take into consideration not only x and y coordinates for interpolation, but also z coordinate. I looked into different packages but it seems i didn't find the right one. The ultimate goal is to import the output into a GIS (Geographical Information

convert day of week from number to character and include in lm
All, I am trying to include a day of week variable (1-7) in in a regression model. I would like to have the day of week treated as a categorical variable rather than a number the code looks like lm( dep ~ WKDY) I know this is a basic question, but help would be appreciated thanks spencer [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

dreaded p-val for d^2 of a glm / gam
OK, I really dread to ask that .... much more that I know some discussion about p-values and if they are relevant for regressions were already on the list. I know to get p-val of regression coefficients - this is not a problem. But unfortunately one editor of a journal where i would like to publish some results insists in giving p-values for the squared deviance i get out from different glm and

Turning on autocreate of maildirs - how?
Hi all, I have a dovecot v2.2.7 installation, and I would like dovecot to autocreate the Maildir mailbox when those mailboxes don't exist. Following the instructions at http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxSettings have had no effect, the errors below are reported. As soon as I create the Maildir manually with maildirmake fetching mail starts working fine, so all of the messages about the

Restricted cubic spline function ERROR?: glm(Y~rcs(x,5))
Dear all, Is the restricted cubic spline function working properly in the glm model? We used glm(y~rcs(x,5), family=binomial) but it seems that for some theoretical reasons the rcs, restricted cubic spline function can not be fitted by a glm function. Is this correct? Regards, Jan ((Originally, we used lrm(y~ rcs(x,5)) but we couldn't find how to derive the AIC value of the fitted model.

DOE and interaction plot general question
This is a general question about Design of experiments. If i am not allowed to post general questions like this here please accept my apologies and ignore the question. I did a DOE with six factors in eight runs. I know i cannot check for interactions using this design, but i tried the interaction plot and it showed me many interactions. After this I foldover the design and ran the 8 runs to learn

Correspondence and detrended correspondence analysis
Hi, I hope someone knows the answer to this or has a real good reference about it (I am using Legendre & Legendre, Numerical Ecology, 1998).... My data is a data.frame with locations as rows and vegetation assemblages / species as columns. I've done a PCA, a correspondance analysis (CA) using ca in ca package and a detrended correspondance analysis (DCA) using decorana from vegan package.

R-help: beginner question - Thank you! OUTLIERS
Hi, Thank you so much for all your rapid answers. I am impressed. What i didn't know was that i have to assign my data to an object to work further on. It was not clear from the help (at least for me) that 'data()' itself is calling data already in R packages. All of you make that clear. Now, if you can suggest any good package to use for identifying outliers it will be great

plot legend outside the grid
Thanks Bert for all the help. I got the legend figured out Friday but left early becoz of long weekend so didn't get a chance to reply.. I modified the plot margins a little bit and Here's what I finally had... par(mar=c(c(10, 6, 6, 10) + 0.1)); par(xpd=FALSE); with (dataFrame, stripchart(marbles_buried ~ genotype, method="jitter", vertical=TRUE, col = c('blue',

plot only partial plots
Hi everybody, I would like to plot only a part of a data frame, and identify the IDs for all the points with values higher than a certain value. I will try to be more explicit: I did a qqnorm plot of my data. It is obvious from the plot that all the sample quantiles which are in Theoretical Quantiles = or > than 1 belong to another group. To be sure about that I plot the cooks.distance

Memory failure!!!!
Hi, I am trying to increase the memory R can use. I am running R under Windows on a machine with 2 GB of physical RAM and 4GB of paged memory. I wrote in the R property windows --sdi --max-mem-size=4094M, but the R itself when it is doing a bayesian modelling (geoR) it stops at 1,096K and i get memory errors because it cannot allocate a new segment of about 500K of memory. I don't have

aov and data behind plots

When i use aov i end up with 4 plots. How do i "see" the data behind those plots? I know about summary - but this gives me only some statistical info. Also, if i want to identify which

R-help: beginner question
Hi, I am a beginner user of R. I have a trivial question ? I am almost ashamed I cannot figure it out does not matter how many times I am reading the help. I have a table in .txt format, tab delimited. I can read it with ?read.delim()? with no problems. Afterwards I would like to use boxplot function to see if there are any outliers in the column 5 of my data called TPAH16.ppm In the
