need help with an interaction term
Hello! I?m fitting a model with glm(family binomial). The best model counts 9 Variables and includes an interaction term that was generated by the product of to continuous variables (a*b). All variables are correlated under a value of 0.7 (Spearman rank order) While the estimates of both main effects are negativ, the resulting interaction term is positiv. This change of sign makes it difficult to

keeping interaction terms
Hello,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> while doing my thesis in habitat modelling I´ve come across a problem with interaction terms. My question concerns the usage of interaction terms for linear regression modelling with R. If an interaction-term (predictor) is chosen for a multiple model, then, according to

[Help] a Correlation Problem
I encounter a statistic problem about correlation. I use R to test wether two variables are correlated or not. (pearson correlation) cor.test(x,y) give a p=5.87.... Because the x, y is not normal distributed (qqplot indicate that) I also perform (spearman rank correlation) cor.test(x,y,method="spearman") give a very significant result p<10e-4

Description of profiles ?
Hello together, I am working on liquid water profiles of clouds and would like to describe these profiles in relation to a reference profile. What is the best way to do this ? RMSE would equal positiv and negativ deviations. Is it better to use a correlation coefficient ? What is the best way, espacially when I want to find out profiles with the same behaviour / shape, which are just more or less

spearman rank correlation problem
Hello R gurus, I want to calculate the Spearman rho between two ranked lists. I am getting results with cor.test that differ in comparison to my own spearman function: > my.spearman function(l1, l2) { if(length(l1) != length(l2)) stop("lists must have same length") r1 <- rank(l1) r2 <- rank(l2) dsq <- sapply(r1-r2,function(x) x^2) 1 - ((6 * sum(dsq))

Possible bug in Spearman correlation with use="pairwise.complete.obs"
Hi, I have just encountered a strange behaviour from 'cor' with regards to the treatment of NAs when calculating Spearman correlations. I guess it is a subtle bug. If I understand the help page correctly, the two modes 'complete.obs' and 'pairwise.complete.obs' specify how to deal with correlation coefficients when calculating a correlation _matrix_. When calculating

R/S-Plus/SAS yield different results for Kendall-tau and Spearman nonparametric regression
Colleagues, I ran some nonparametric regressions in R (run in RedHat Linux), then a colleague repeated the analyses in SAS. When we obtained different results, I tested S-Plus (same Linux box). And, got yet different results. I replicated the results with a small dataset: DATA: 37.5 23 37.5 13 25 16 25 12 100 15 12.5 19 50 20 100 13 100 10 100 10 100 16 50 10 87.5

How to formulate quadratic function with interaction terms for the PLS fitting model?
Dear all, I am using the pls package of R to perform partial least square on a set of multivariate data. Instead of fitting a linear model, I want to fit my data with a quadratic function with interaction terms. But I am not sure how. I will use an example to illustrate my problem: Following the example in the PLS manual: ## Read data data(gasoline) gasTrain <- gasoline[1:50,] ## Perform

A question about using “by” in GAM model fitting of interaction between smooth terms and factor
I am a little bit confusing about the following help message on how to fit a GAM model with interaction between factor and smooth terms from http://rss.acs.unt.edu/Rdoc/library/mgcv/html/gam.models.html: ?Sometimes models of the form: E(y)=b0+f(x)z need to be estimated (where f is a smooth function, as usual.) The appropriate formula is: y~z+s(x,by=z) - the by argument ensures that the smooth

lm() with spearman corr option ?
Hi, A following function was kindly provided by GGally?s maintainer, Barret Schloerke. function(data, mapping, ...) { p <- ggplot(data = data, mapping = mapping) + geom_point(color = I("blue")) + geom_smooth(method = "lm", color = I("black"), ...) + theme_blank() + theme(panel.border=element_rect(fill=NA, linetype =

How to interpret Spearman Correlation
Hi, I am not really familiar with Correlation foundations, although I read a lot. So maybe if someone kindly help me to interpret the following results. I had the following R commands: correlation <-cor( vector_CitationProximity , vector_Impact, method = "spearman", use="na.or.complete") cor_test<-cor.test(vector_CitationProximity, vector_Impact,

correlating between two vectors of numbers
Hi, R! Question1: I am trying to correlate two vectors of numbers (two columns of microarray signal values) by using the non-parametric Spearman's rank correlation coefficient rho: > cor.test(V2.Signal,V3.Signal,method="spearman") but I get the error message: Error in if (q > (n^3 - n)/6) pspearman(q - 1, n, lower.tail = FALSE) else pspearman(q, : missing value

cor and missing values. Bug?
There seems to be an issue in computing rank correlations with missing values present. I think this comes from the way rank() function works but I am not sure how to go about this. Rank function places missing values at the end by default thus skewing the rank relationship between two vectors: Example: R : Copyright 2003, The R Foundation for Statistical Computing Version 1.8.1 (2003-11-21),

bug? in stats::cor for use=complete.obs with NAs
Arrrrr, I think I've found a bug in the behavior of the stats::cor function when NAs are present, but in case I'm missing something, could you look over this example and let me know what you think: > a = c(1,3,NA,1,2) > b = c(1,2,1,1,4) > cor(a,b,method="spearman", use="complete.obs") [1] 0.8164966 > cor(a,b,method="spearman",

Fitting problem for Cox model with Strata as interaction term
Dear All, I got a warning message "X matrix deemed to be singular" in Cox model with a time dependent coefficient. In my analysis, the variable "SEX" is a categorical variable which violate the PH assumption in Cox. I first used the survSplit() function to break the data set into different time intervals, and then fit the model. The procedures can be described as follows:

fitting gamm with interaction term
Hi all, I would like to fit a gamm model of the form: Y~X+X*f(z) Where f is the smooth function and With random effects on X and on the intercept. So, I try to write it like this: gam.lme<- gamm(Y~ s(z, by=X) +X, random=list(groups=pdDiag(~1+X)) ) but I get the error message : Error in MEestimate(lmeSt, grps) : Singularity in backsolve at level 0, block 1

Spearman correlation ties and discrepancies
Hi. I am currently trying to run some Spearman correlations, and have encountered two issues. 1) When using cor.test() with a variable that includes ties, I get the "Cannot compute exact p-values with ties" error. I have read that this function now uses an asymptotic formula that allows for ties, so do not understand why I am getting this error. (I am running version 2.4.0.) I
