How do I wrap a long mixed text/math expression in an axis label?
I would like to wrap a y-axis label onto two lines. My label is an expression containing both text and math symbols. I have looked at plotmath, strsplit(), strwrap(), deparse(), do.call(), substitute() and bquote(). Based on previous posts, I can get plain text to wrap. However, when I try these methods on my label, the exact string is returned, rather than evaluating the math symbols. My

akima::interp "scales of x and y are too dissimilar"
Dear R users, I want to do a fitted.contour plot of selected columns of a dataframe M with M$AM and M$Irradiance as x and y axes respectively. The level of the contour shall be determined by M$PR. Some words on my data first. Dataframe M looks like: head(M$Irradiance) [1] 293 350 412 419 477 509 head(M$AM) [1] 2.407 2.161 1.964 1.805 1.673 1.563 head(M$PR) [1] 70.102 72.600 75.097 80.167

Making R packages
Hi: I am posting this message for a colleague who has a lot of trouble to build an R package on Windows. He did not find a solution to his problems on the R-help archives and hopes that one of the R gurus will be able to help. He has a directory "CO2" which should contain all the required files and directories: DATA: DESCRIPTION MAN: R: README SRC: The following command is

help with nlme function
Hello. I am trying to fit a nonlinear mixed model involving 3 parameters. I have successfully made a self-starting function. getInitial() correctly outputs the initial estimates. I can also use the nlsList with this function to get the separate nonlinear fits by group. However, I get an error message when using the nlme function. Here is the relevent code:

Help with Lattice
Hi: I have started to use Lattice two days ago and find that it is an outstanding package. I am, however, stumbling on two problems, despite the fact that I have read the help pages as well as two pdf documents on Trellis that I found on the web. 1- I want to remove the ticks on the top and right sides of the panels and did not see any option in "scales" to do so. 2- I would like

length of dimnames???
Hi: I have made a lot of progress reading and manipulating large data files, thanks to the help of several of you. I am now stuck with writing the final file with the following error (see also the full transcript below): Error in as.matrix.data.frame(x) : length of dimnames[2] not equal to array extent I do not know what it means and could not find how to get around that in the manual nor

More help with Lattice
Hi: Thanks a lot to Deepayan Sarkar, author of lattice I think, who solved my first query. I am afraid that I have another one. I am plotting several mutipanels boxplots (with one conditioning variable) on one page. The x, y and conditioning variable are all continuous variables. The x and conditioning variables are transformed to shingles before being plotted. The plot looks nice but there

avoiding termination of nls given convergence failure
Hello. I have a script in which I repeatedly fit a nonlinear regression to a series of data sets using nls and the port algorithm from within a loop. The general structure of the loop is: for(i in 1:n){ … extract relevant vectors of dependent and independent variables … … estimate starting values for Amax and Q.LCP…

error calling Winbugs using R2WinBugs to run a multi-level model
Dear all, I'm calling Winbugs (1.4.3) through R2WinBugs (2.1-18 coda_0.14-7) to fit a switching random walk model, but come up with an instant trap with the log only displaying 'check('. I will paste the trap with session info below; I'd be very grateful for any ideas. Couple of leads: 1. I presume the problem relates to the r package itself or the way I call bugs(), because I

making self-starting function for nls
Hello. Following pages 342-347 of Pinheiro & Bates, I am trying to write a self-starting nonlinear function (a non-rectagular hyperbola) to be used in nonlinear least squares regression (and eventually for a mixed model). When I use the getInitial function for my self-starting function I get the following error message: > getInitial(photo~NRhyperbola(Irr,theta,Am,alpha,Rd),dat) Error

Arimax with intervention dummy and multiple covariates
Hi I'm trying to measure the effect of a policy intervention (Box and Tiao, 1975). This query has to do with the coding of the model rather than with the particulars of my dataset, so I'm not providing the actual dataset (or a simulated one) in this case, apart from some general description. The time series are of length n=34 (annual observations between 1977 and 2010). The policy
