piecewise linear approximation
Dear list, I have a series of data points which I want to approximate with exactly two linear functions. I would like to choose the intervals so that the total deviation from my fitted lines is minimal. How do I best do this? Thanks! drawing ellipses in R
Hello, I have been following the thread dated Monday, October 9, 2006 when Kamila Naxerova asked a question about plotting elliptical shapes. Can you explain the equations for X and Y. I believe they used the parametric form of x and y (x=r cos(theta), y=r sin(theta). I don't know what r is here ? Can you explain 1)the origin of these equations and 2) what is r? Sincerely, Mary A. Different results under Windows and Linux
Hi everyone, disturbingly, a PCA yields different results when I run the analysis under Windows and Linux. I open the same workspace (which is on an independent partition) and perform the exact same function (by using the history file). Interestingly, PC1 is the same, but PC2 comes out totally different. Thanks! Kamila Windows: platform i386-pc-mingw32 arch i386 os

MEMORY limit in R
I sent this to Bioconductor, but I think it is more of an R listserv question, because of memory allocation trouble I am having trouble getting the function heatmap() to work on the following gene expression > dim(SAMPLES_log) [1] 12626 20 sample1 sample2...................sample20 gen1 gen2 gen3 .... gen12626 I have converted SAMPLES_log to a numeric matrix using:

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 install fails -ve memory reported
Hi folks, I'm presently having my second foray into Wine. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on a machine with 3GB memory. I'm having problems installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 and would welcome some guidance. When I run "wine /media/cdrom1/autorun.exe" the install looks promising for a few moments, then an error message saying: "Your computer does not meet the minimum

huge array with floats: allocation error
Hi After searching through a couples of documents and the mailing list I dare to ask it here I need to define an array with the size 64 x 64 x 16 x 1000 for single-precision floating-point numbers. With 1G RAM I get always the error: "cannot allocate vector of size 458752 Kb" "reached total allocation of 1022MB: see help(memory.size)" I consulted memory.size() but it

Indexing Mail faster
Hi, I am trying to get faster search results on our webmail client(Roundcube). Besides using Lucene for FTS are there other options? Would having all mails indexed give fast results? Currently the time it takes to search 25,000mails is 4mins. If indexed how much faster are we looking at? Really appreciate if someone could advise about this. Thanks Kevin

With a current version of Dovecot a search is pretty fast _without_ using external indexes. I have a view defined (virtual plugin) with around 22.000 messages in it, and searching the full view only takes 2.5

gplpv: re-enabling the nic adapter removes it
I guess I have stumbled upon a bug in gplpv drivers. If you try to re-enable an nic adapter after disabling it, it just hides out of blue. And you have to reboot. Latest version of gplpv drivers and Windows 2008 R2 here. Anyone else noticed the same issue? I wonder if this is related to hot-plugging something like

Memory allocation problem with large dataset
Hello All, I have a problem when I try and run an nlme model with an added correlation structure on a large dataset. This is not surprising, but I am not sure how to fix this problem. I am using R 2.6.1, and I have had similar problems in S-plus. My dataset is mass growth data from the same 8 animals over 10 years, and is a data.frame with 23,598 rows and 5 columns, and using

Warnings compiling on OpenBSD 4.4 i386
Hi, probably just nothing to worry about, but I get the following warnings when building 1.1.7 on OpenBSD 4.4 on i386. If I remove the --with-bsdauth config option, they all disappear. I won't use it anyway, but maybe there are others. $ dmesg OpenBSD 4.4 (GENERIC) #1021: Tue Aug 12 17:16:55 MDT 2008 deraadt at i386.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC cpu0: Intel(R)
