Advice on parsing formulae
Dear list I would like to be able to group terms in a formula using a function that I will call tvar(), eg. the formula Y ~ 1 + tvar(x:A) + tvar(z) + u + tvar(B) + tvar(poly(v,3)) where x,u and v are numeric and A and B are factors - binary, say. As output, I want the model.matrix as if tvar had not been there at all. In addition, I would like to have information on the grouping, as a vector

StructTS (PR#7353)
Dear R-bugs I have been studying the StructTS function (in package 'stats') and functions supplied with it. I think I have found a few minor bugs in the documentation. I am referring to the version of StructTS supplied with the release R 2.0.0. Output from 'version' platform i386-pc-mingw32 arch i386 os mingw32 system i386, mingw32 status

TeX distribution on Windows
I'm looking for a Windows distribution of TeX that works with R, after a few years' absence from Windows. On Duncan Murdoch's Rtools page fptex is still recommended, but it turns out that fptex is "defunct" as of May 2005, see http://www.metz.supelec.fr/~popineau/xemtex-7.html So, what is suggested? TUG (tug.org) recommends something called proTeXt, which is said to be

Why CentOS 5.2 is so large?
Hi, folks. I have download the DVD image of CentOS 5.2. Comparing with the DVD image of Upstream OS Provider, I got a surprise: The size of the DVD image of Upstream OS Provider is just 2.87 GB(i386), but the size of the DVD image of CentOS 5.2(i386) is so large that is 3.74 GB! I kown that CentOS's developers did very excellent work on how to make the Upstream OS more availability and add

[Q] Bayeisan Network with the "deal" package
Dear R-users I am looking for a help in using the "deal" package. I followed the manual and paper from the author's web site to learn it, as shown below, but I could not figure out how to access the local and posterior probability of the nodes in the constructed network. library(deal) data(ksl) ksl.nw <- network(ksl) ksl.prior <- jointprior(ksl.nw) banlist <-

Using rsync to mirror directories where root owns file, using non-root user to initiate session
I have spent a day researching and attempting to debug this issue. I am hoping someone can tell me how (or disabuse me of the delusion that it's possible) to do the following: - Mirror the contents of a directory on one server to a remote server where there are diverse ownership and permissions - File and directory ownership on both the source and destination servers would normally prevent

2 time dependend states and probability transition matrix
Hi, have got anybody experience or a starting point for me, how i can program a function which calculate me a probability transition matrix with a data.frame and two states. I have some independend variable and a class variable for two states - in example one from Jan2003 and the same variables from June2003. Now i would like to calculate the probability that PERSON X change from classA to

NA %*% 0 == 0 (PR#4582)
Full_Name: J . R. M. Hosking Version: 1.8.0 OS: Windows 2000 Submission from: (NULL) (129.34.20.23) On R 1.8.0 (and on R 1.5.1), Windows binary: > NA %*% 0 [,1] [1,] 0 This is surprising. Is it a bug? Note that > 0 %*% NA [,1] [1,] NA > NA %*% 1 [,1] [1,] NA > NA * 0 [1] NA as expected.

Effect size in mixed models
Hello, Is there a way to compare the relative relevance of fixed and random effects in mixed models? I have in mind measures of effect size in ANOVAs, and would like to obtain similar information with mixed models. Are there information criteria that allow to compare the relevance of each of the effects in a mixed model to the overall fit? Thank you, Bruno

did my searching but still couldn't find anything for bayesian dlm
I familarized myelf with kalmanlike and structts which are approaches for building and estimating ( and forecasting ) state space models ( or the equivalent arima models ). back in 2003, gavin simpson wrote an email describing the west and harrison apprach to estimate state space models and asked if anything was out there for using that approach. the goals of this approach are the same as kalman

problem with printer drivers
Hallo, I'm running a Samba 2.2.5 server on a SuSE 8.1 box. I setup a [print$] share at server pslag, following the documentation. I have a [printer$] share too. Without it, Samba wouldn't export my cups printers for browsing. My config file is like that: [global] : printing = cups printcap name = CUPS printer admin = root load printers = Yes : [printers]

package compilation
Hi, I recently wrote a new R package, which I could 'R CMD check' and 'R CMD build' nicely on my Intel Linux PC. Loading the new library as a normal user on my PC also works nicely. This packages includes some compiled C-code in a shared library. However, before submitting the package to CRAN I wanted to install it also under an other platform in order to check if everything

sem question
Dear all, I am trying to estimate simultaneous equation model concerning growth in russian regions. I run the analysis by means of FIML in R sem package. I am not familiar with SEM yet, but I've just got several suitable estimated specifications. Nevertheless, sometimes R gives the following warning message: Warning message: Negative parameter variances. Model is probably underidentified.

encoding a ntlm-hash from cleartext passwords with java
Hi, i am writing a tiny application which generates new accounts from an existent department's database. This is a school and i have to create several hundred accounts per year, so i think it's worth the effort. special question on regression
Hello R-people! I have a general statistical question about regressions. I just want to describe my case: I have got a dataset of around 150 observations and 1 dependent and 2 independent variables. The dependent variable is of metric nature (in my case meters in a range from around 0.5-10000 m). The first independent is also metric (in mm ranging from 50-700 mm) and it is assumed to be

Package "deal" version 1.2-17
A new version of the package "deal" is now available on CRAN. The package is for learning (parameters and structure) of Bayesian networks and provide an interface to Hugin. In the new version there is an interface to the package dynamicGraph which allows for editing and callbacks of graphs in the displayed window. Try > install.packages(c("dynamicGraph","deal"))
