Has the add parameter of plot commands been deprecated?
R for OS X, version 2.0.1 Has the add parameter of plot commands been deprecated? It no longer occurs in the help listing for plot, and doesn't work, either. If it has been deprecated, what is the replacement? That is, how does one overlay an existing plot? -- John R. contrasts in aov
useRs, A no doubt simple question, but I am baffled. Indeed, I think I once knew the answer, but can't recover it. The default contrasts for aov (and lm, and...) are contr.treatment and contr.poly for unordered and ordered factors, respectively. But, how does one invoke the latter? That is, in a data.frame, how does one indicate that a factor is an *ordered* factor such that

Regarding aov Error()
The following dummy data frame has factor Q (with 2 levels) nesting factor P (with levels p1 and p2 nested under q1, and p3 and p4 nested under q2), but both crossing the random variate s, which has 8 levels. Trouble phrasing an R command that will run the model i need (ANOVA, nes
Hi John, Thank-you very much for replying, - in answer to your questions: *"As I understand what you wrote, all factors but linelabel are crossed, with linelabel nested within all the other factors?" That's exactly it, *" What is in the highest order cells? Single observations, or multiple scores?" I would say "single observations" - but i have to

Whine in dual core Windows PC if R uses full CPU capacity
Dear R-developers, the following may seem a weird question for R-devel – I try anyway, because it does seem to be related to usage of R and R's way of interacting with the hardware. When running R (2.4.0) on my new dual core Windows XP system (Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Mainboard ASUS P5B, BeQuiet Power Unit), I observe various types of sounds (not related to fans) when running at full

Possible with lm() or glm()?
HelpeRs, I have what amounts to a stupid design---entirely my fault, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Every participant in the experiment receives a series of a two-alternative forced-choice (2afc) pairs generated at random from a pool of items that make up the pairs. The independent variable of interest is the difference in the 2afc pairs on a metric measure to predict

prop.test() and the simultaneous confidence interval for multiple proportions in R
Dear list members, I want to perform in R the analysis "simultaneous confidence interval for multiple proportions", as illustrated in the article of Agresti et al. (2008) "Simultaneous confidence intervals for comparing binomial parameter", Biometrics 64, 1270-1275. If I am not wrong the R function implementing the Agresti et al. method is prop.test(). I ask an help because I

ANOVA of a sort
Dear R Help, I have a general question - I know this is the R list, but I hope someone can help me out a little as I've always found the help here to be absolutely fantastic. I have run a psychological study where participants are given multiple stimuli and their responses to those stimuli are measured on the same numerical scale, i.e., the data is something like Participant Stimulus

no doubt a dumb question, but..
Yes, I am a newbie at R, but it is not the complex commands in R that have me baffled, but simple data commands. For example, why does something like: > plot(Girth ~ Height) *not* work after a command that allegedly loads the data: > data(trees) with the error message: Error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : Object "Girth" not found but does work after the command: >

Wine / Whine
In the information on your site you talk of stripped and unstripped wine, ok so I load both of them onto my machine. When i look at the installation guide it says download the wine and wineserver? What is the wineserver it hasn't been mentioned yet?

Just let whiners whine... Please?
There'll be whiners on all lists, and no list is ever going to be pleasing everybody... (And everyone should decide for themselves whether or not they belong to that group, as I will not be mentioning names! I'm sure there are those who'll think *I* am a whiner...) So at some point just let it be and continue the thread. Keeping on and on about it only increases noise to post

Re: High pitched whine with Speex
When I just copy the microphone input buffer to the output buffer the sound plays OK. But if I encode and decode the buffer through Speex I get a high pitched constant tone in the background. I actually do hear my voice speaking when I talk, but it's faint and much quieter than the tone. Here's what my data looks like: Input is the first 5 floats of each input buffer. Output is

Re: High pitched whine with Speex
Changing from using floats to shorts did fix the high pitched tone problem. I'm having other problems but I'll look into it more first. Question on survey package
Is there a way to use one of the functions in the survey package to get a table of estimated percentages (or proportions) and the standard error for each? For example, suppose that AGECODE AND SEX are two factors with 5 and 2 levels. The 5x2 AGECODE x SEX table would have the estimated percentage of persons in each cell, 100*(sum of weights in the cell) / (sum of all weights) and the std

Were to find appropriate functions for a given task in R
This is a generic request concerning were to look for finding appropriate information on a precise procedure in R. I’m using R for teaching introductory statistics and my students are learning how to deal with it. However, I find it difficult to locate some of the procedures. For instance, for basic crosstabulation, it is obvious that basic functions as table, ftable, and prop.table can be used.

contingency tables in R
Dear List: Most of the analysis I do involves contingency tables. I am migrating to R from Stata and I have a number of questions about using contingency tables in R. I suspect that most of the things I want to do are very short R scripts that people on this list probably have. I wonder if you would be willing to share them. First, the presentation of tables by table() is not

R ``literal'' comand
I know I am luddite when it comes to list-based languages, such as R. But, even these beasts must occasionally want to access objects at a literal level. For example, to a naive twit like me, x<--print (y) should deposit in x a literal print out of y; that is, x should contain the *results* of applying the print method to y (e.g., something like a tab (or space)-delimited flat

Frequencies, proportions & cumulative proportions
Dear R-Helpers, I've looked high and low for a function that provides frequencies, proportions and cumulative proportions side-by-side. Below is the table I need. Is there a function that already does it? Thanks, Bob > # Generate some test scores > myValues <- c(70:95) > Score <- ( sample( myValues, size=1000, replace=TRUE) ) > head(Score) [1] 77 71 81 88 83 93 > >

reordering combn(n,p)
I found the following slightly surprising and thought that it might (eventually) be useful to someone to document it: Problem: I wanted to reorder the columns of the matrix produced by combn(n,p) so that adjacent columns only differed by one element. I assumed that this was a problem known to the Assyrians and resisted the temptation to write to r-help, and through assiduous googling finally
