issue with L-BFGS-B in optim (optim just hangs)
Dear R-Help List, I am using optim, with method=L-BFGS-B, to maximize a likelihood inside a large simulation exercise. This runs fine for most simulated data sets, but for some reason, about 1 out of 100 times, optim will just hang. Using a dumb approach to the problem (i.e. printing the parameter values each time the function being maximized is evaluated), I tracked down when this happens,

Comparing GAM objects using ANOVA
Hi, Is it possible to compare two GAM objects created with the gam() function from the mgcv package. I use a slightly modified version of anova.glm() named anova.gam(), modified from John Fox (2002). It often gives me some aberant responses, especially with "F" test. I use a quasibinomial model and scale (dispersion) is calculated and used in the calculation of the F value. Does someone

Pspline smoothing
Dear all, I'm trying to use the Pspline add-on package to fit a quintic spline (norder =3), but I keep running into a Singularity error. > traj.spl <- smooth.Pspline(time, x, norder=3 ) Error in smooth.Pspline(time, x, norder = 3) : Singularity error in solving equations > Playing around with the other parameters produces an "unused arguments" error: > traj.spl

Random numbers
Hi All. I have R code whose functionality is being replicated within a C+ program. The outputs are to be compared to validate the conversion somewhat - however (as is always the case) I have stuffed my code with random number calls. Random uniform numbers in C+ are being produced using the (Boost) mersenne-twister generators (mt11213b & mt19937) - which is the default type of generator

points on a sphere
Not an R question directly, but has anyone got a method for placing a moderately large number of (near) equi-spaced points on a sphere? I have a nasty feeling platonic solids are needed for exact solutions and I'm thinking of samplings involving around 200 - 1000 regularly-spaced points, Thanks, Richard Rowe Richard Rowe Senior Lecturer Department of Zoology and Tropical Ecology, James

File Encoding Warnings during package installs
I've been getting the following warning on each package update/install (Rv2.4 on SunOS9): Warning message: 'DESCRIPTION' file has 'Encoding' field and re-encoding is not possible. This was the case on R2.3 and now on R2.4 as well - any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you, Sarosh Jamal Geo Computing & IT Specialist, Department of Geography University of

degrees of freedom question
R2.3, WinXP Dear all, I am using the following functions: f1 = Phi1+(Phi2-Phi1)/(1+exp((log(Phi3)-log(x))/exp(log(Phi4))) f2 = Phi1+(Phi2-Phi1)/(1+exp((log(Phi3)-log(r)-log(x))/exp(log(Phi4))) subject to the residual weighting Var(e[i]) = sigma^2 * abs( E(y) )^(2*Delta) Here is my question, in steps: 1. Function f1 is separately fitted to two different datasets corresponding to

help with time data - R weird behaviour across machines
Hello list, I was hoping I could get some help on something which is really giving me a headache. Dom0 log and disk space management
We''re running a handful of XCP 1.1 pools and have run in to situations wherein the local filesystem on the Dom0 control domain hits 100% capacity due to error logging in /var/log (daemon.log, messages, xensource.log, etc) thereby taking that host offline. Twice recently we''ve run in to this, on two different pools, first due to the primary SR hitting capacity and secondly when

CPU enumeration
Hello, Is it possible to alter how XCP enumerates multi-core cpu’s such that a Vcpu represents a “socket”, rather than a “core”? A server with dual quad core processors, no HT, presents each of the 8 cores as a Vcpu to the guest. Windows Server 2008 R2 see’s each Vcpu as a unique “socket” and we are therefore coming up against licensing issues with Windows and more importantly SQL Server 2008

How to convert stand-alone samba servers to join existing Windows Active Directory domain
We have multiple stand-alone samba (4.2.10 and 4.10.4) file sharing servers with hundreds of local users on each server (not the same on all samba servers) in a CentOS/Oracle Linux (6 and 7) network. We would like to convert these stand-alone servers to join an existing Windows based AD domain without losing data or ownership/permission metadata on these servers. Is there a guide for doing

Storage Resource RAID & Disk type
Are there any best practice recommendations on RAID & disk type for the shared storage resource for a pool? I''m adding shelves to a HP MSA2000 G2, 24 drives total, minus hot spare(s). I can use 600GB SAS drives (15k rpm), 1TB or 2TB Midline SAS drives (7200rpm). I need about 3TB usable for roughly 30 VM guests, 100GB each, web servers so I/O needs are nominal. I''m also

Changes to Windows registry in R-2.2.0
R-Devel, I note from the CHANGES log accompanying the Windows version of R-2.2.0 that the behaviour with respect to the Windows registry has changed. It says: "If the user chooses to register R during installation, a registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\R-core\R\{version}\InstallPath will be added. Users require administrative privileges to create this key. For others, the same key

virt-builder download issues
I'm having trouble downloading templates (ubuntu-18.04, among others) using virt-builder. The downloads get to about 50% (or 13, or 62) and then stall. wget easily downloads the files quickly. I'd be happy with working around this by manually placing the images in the cache directory, but I can't seem to figure out the appropriate placement. virt-builder doesn't find the cached
