re ad.spss (foreign) conflict with SPSS 17 files.
SPSS seems to have changed its default datafile format, resulting in issues for read.spss(). In Windows this results in a warning, in Debian the import completely fails: Debian (R version 2.8.0 (2008-10-20) i486-pc-linux-gnu, foreign_0.8-29) > read.spss("/home/jeroen/samples/Tomato.sav") Error in iconv(names(rval), cp, "") : unsupported conversion from 'CP65001'

read.spss (package foreign) and SPSS 15.0 files
Hello, does anyone have experience with reading SPSS Version 15.0 files into R (version 2.4.1, WinXP)? I have long been sucessfully reading SPSS files with read.spss from the wonderful foreign package, but somehow after upgrading from SPSS14 to SPSS15 I seem to have problems. Trying a simple example, where test.sav is a SPSS 15.0 data file consisting of x1=c(1,2,3) and

SPSS and library(foreign)
Hi, I have a valid SPSS .sav file (which I can open happily in SPSS v11 on Windows XP). Opening it in R2.41 on Linux we get this message :- > HSE3023 <- read.spss("HSE.sav") Error in read.spss("HSE.sav") : error reading system-file header In addition: Warning message: HSE.sav: Variable X234 indicates variable label of invalid length 256 Now variable X234 has indeed a

foreign(read.spss) in rw2000 and re2001beta
I encountered something strange with read.spss (package foreign, version 0.7 with R2.0.0 and version 0.8 with R2.0.1 beta, windows XP) I made a test file test.sav with SPSS version 11.5.1 containing only one numeric variable, with a value label for one value not occuring in the file. According to ?read.spss this should result in a factor, but it results in all NA. Using the argument

Add col in data.frame
Hello Gurus, I am still new to R. Here is my issue. I was trying to add column to data frame that was populated by read.spss(). When I used cbind to add a new variable(column). library(foreign) mydf<-read.spss(file="C:/myspss.sav",use.value.labels=FALSE, to.data.frame=TRUE,use.missings=FALSE) attr(mydf,"variable.labels") ## it gives you all the labels

read.spss (package foreign) and character columns
Dear R users! I am using R Version 1.7.1, Windows XP, package "foreign" (Version: 0.6-1), SPSS 11.5.1. There is one thing I noticed with "read.spss", and I'd like to ask if this is considered to be a feature, or possibly a bug: When reading character columns, character strings seem to get filled with blanks at the end. Simple example: In SPSS, create a file with one

importing explicitly declared missing values in read.spss (foreign)
There is a problem when importing an spss-file containing explicitly declared missing values in R using the read.spss function from the foreign package. I'm not sure these problems are the same in every version of spss, I am using the latest version 16.0.2. I included http://www.nabble.com/file/p18776776/missingdata.sav missingdata.sav and

write.foreign, SPSS on Mac OS X
Hi all, I have jut installed the foreign package (v 0.8-8) on my OS X machine, and have a bit of a problem writing out a data frame in SPSS format. Specifically, the code file (the .sps format file) seems to write 3 unprintable hex values instead of double quotes. For example, in the following output ... VALUE LABELS / immDel 1 ###1### 2 ###2### 3 ###3### ... emacs tells me that

things that are difficult/impossible to do in SAS or SPSS but simple in R
Hi all, I'm giving a talk in a few days to a group of psychology faculty and grad students re the R statistical language. Most people in my dept. use SAS or SPSS. It occurred to me that it would be nice to have a few concrete examples of things that are fairly straightforward to do in R but that are difficult or impossible to do in SAS or SPSS. However, it has been so long since I have used

SPSS to R Data file conversion
I wrote a little routine to convert multiple spss data files (as data frames) to R data files. The code is as follows: # list=dir(pattern=".sav") library(foreign) for (i in 1:length(list)){ # The saved data frame will be dat dat=read.spss(list[i],to.data.frame=TRUE) name=substring(list[i],1,nchar(list[i])-4) rname=paste("../R/",name,".rda",sep="") # This

yeroon.net/ggplot2 web application v0.11
A new version of the ggplot2 web application is available at http://www.yeroon.net/ggplot2. New features include 1D geom?s (histogram,?density, freqpoly), syntax mode (by clicking the tiny arrow at the?bottom), and some additional facet options. Furthermore some minor?improvements and fixes, most notably for Internet Explorer. As usual, a little demo video that shows how to use the new features:

read.spss {foreign} doesn't work over network?
I'm unable to open an SPSS file over my network. If I copy it to my local C:/ drive I can read it. I saved the command (in a "crib sheet" text file) in order to avoid all the typing, so I'm pretty sure I've done it before. I verified that the file I'm trying to read is OK. This is what happens: > SurveyData <-

Primer for working with survey data in R
Dear Kevin, In addition to the advice you've received, take a look at the survey package. It's not quite what you're asking for, but in fact it's probably more useful, in that it provides correct statistical inference for data collected in complex surveys. The package is described in an article, T. Lumley (2004), Analysis of complex survey samples, Journal of Statistical Software
