writing polygons/segments to shapefiles (.shp) or other A rcGIS compatible file
The main limitation of the shapefiles package that I put together is that it does not create shapefiles from R objects - rather it only writes shapefiles that have been read into R and manipulated within the constraints of the existing file structure. By this I mean that for example you can change the coordinates of points and write them back out. Or you can add a bunch of blank columns in the

writing polygons/segments to shapefiles (.shp) or other ArCGIS compatible file
I am not sure a previous e-mail reached the list (no mail aknowledgement from R-boundle etc.). The question was how to write polygon or segment coordinates into a shapefile set or any other ArcGIS supported format. The library shapefiles seems to do something but the documentation is a bit beyond of my mind.... and I cannot get the meaning of the functions write**** and its application to the case

Graphically show population density for a specific geographic area using R
Hi, we all know that R is powerful in dealing with graphics. I am now trying to use R to show some geographic attributes for a specific geographic area on a graph. For example, if I would like to generate a graph showing the population densities (in terms of the intensity of colors) for Illinois State by zip codes. I did some research; and it seems that package "maptools" is

Re: using shapefile as owin
My sincerest apologies, as this is a very elementary problem, but I have searched through archives and FAQs and on the web, and I am at the end of my own resources. I need to do analysis of a spatial point process occuring with four counties, using spatstat. I've had no trouble importing the shapefiles, but I can't seem to figure out what I need to do in order to use the boundary as an

Summary: Unexpected result of read.dbf
Hi there, This is summary and patch for a bug in read.dbf, demonstrating in Message-Id: <20050818150446.697835cb.stanimura-ngs at umin.ac.jp>. After consulting Rjpwiki, a cyber-community of R user in Japan, the cause was found, and the patch of solution was proposed. Overflowing occurs when we use read.dbf for reading a dbf file having a field of longer signed integer. For example, $

transform shapefiles in UTM to lat/long
Dear all: I have a shapefile in UTM coordinate system and I would like to transform it to Lat/Log coordinates (WSG84). However, when shapefiles are imported using function read.shape (package maptools), a list

monte carlo simulations/lmer
Hi - I am doing some monte carlo simulations comparing bayesian (using Plummer's jags) and maximum likelihood (using lmer from package lme4 by Bates et al). I would like to know if there is a way I can flag nonconvergence and exceptions. Currently the simulations just stop and the output reads things like: Error in optim(.Call("lmer_coef", x, 2, PACKAGE = "Matrix"), fn,
