How to purchase R on CD
My organization has a policy against "installing software downloaded from
the Internet." There is a waiver procedure, but it is difficult and
lengthy. It is much easier to get approval to purchase software, even if
it is a CD copy of open-source.
However, a search on r-project.org didn't seem to show any way of obtaining
the distribution in this way.

glmmADMB and the GPL -- formerly-- How to buy R.
Dear List,
Some of you have been following the discussion of the GPL and its inclusion
in the glmmADMB package we created for R users. I would like to provide
a bit of background and include an email we received from
Prof. Ripley so that everyone can be aware of how some might use the
GPL to try to force access to proprietary software. I think this is
interesting because many have voiced the

rgdal under windows?
Hi,
Has anyone had any joy getting the rgdal package to compile under windows?
I've been trying with MinGW using Duncan Murdoch's Rtools but to no avail.
After unpacking the tarball I put it here:
D:\rw1091\src\library\rgdal>ls
DESCRIPTION R configure inst man
INDEX cleanup configure.in install.R src
And then tried:

compilation error when installing GLMMGibbs on SuSE Linux 8.2 (R v. 1.7.1)
I getting compilation errors when trying to install GLMMGibbs (see below).
I'm running R v 1.7.1 on SuSE Linux 8.2.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried it on a Win2000/R 1.5.1 combination
and it worked fine. Any hints are greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Damien

How can you buy R? [Broadcast]
My understanding is that if a licensee wants to redistribute GPL code (or
work derived from GPL code), then it has to be done under GPL as well,
meaning the person must make it known to users that they can have access to
the source code if so desired, and they can do anything they want with that
code (including selling), but GPL must remain in force for further
redistribution.

r-forge build failure bafflement
I am attempting to build a package on r-forge and running into a
weird error. I have been in correspondence with the R-forge admins
and am turning to r-devel on the remote chance that someone might have
a guess as to what is going wrong or a suggestion about further
diagnostics/experiments I could try ...
The package seems to build fine on my system(s) with
R CMD build --compact-vignettes

glmmADMB
Hi there,
I am new to the package glmmadmb, but need it to perform a zero-inflated
gzlmm with a binomial error structure. I can't seem to get it to work
without getting some strange error messages.
I am trying to find out what is affecting the number of seabird calls on an
array of recorders placed at 4 sites on 6 islands. I have nightly variables

glmmADMB: Generalized Linear Mixed Models using AD Model Builder
Dear R-users,
Half a year ago we put out the R package "glmmADMB" for fitting
overdispersed count data.
http://otter-rsch.com/admbre/examples/glmmadmb/glmmADMB.html
Several people who used this package have requested
additional features. We now have a new version ready.
The major new feature is that glmmADMB allows Bernoulli responses
with logistic and probit links. In addition there

ADMB error- function maximizer failed (couldnt find STD file)
Greetings glmmADMB function users,
I am trying to run a series of models using the glmmADMB function with several different distribution families (e.g., poisson, negbinom). I am using a Optiplex 790 PC with Windows 7, 16.0 GB of RAM and a 64-bit operating system. I am running R version 2.15.0 and started out using the most recent version of glmmADMB (I believe version 7.2.15).

help with glmmADMB ZI; function maximizer failed
Dear all,
I am having some problems trying to run a GLMM model with zero-inflation
using the alpha version of glmmADMB (0.6.4) using R (2.13.1) in Windows and
I would greatly appreciate some help.
My count response variable (number of birds: count) fits a negative binomial
distribution and the explanatory variables are both continuous and
categorical (species= 17). The three random effects are

Bug report for package foreign anf functon write.foreign
Dear all,
First of all, I thank you for the creation of the package.
I write this message concerning the write.foreign() function from the foreign package and a bug that I discovered.
When we want to save our dataset as a .sas file, the limit of variable names character is 8 by default. In SAS this limit is 32 character and an argument in the function, validvarname, can theorically switch the

glmmadmb help
[cc'ed back to r-help]
I've started to take a look, and there's nothing immediately obvious
about the problem with the fit (the warnings and errors are about a
"non-positive-definite Hessian", which usually means an
overfitted/poorly identified model) -- still working on whether there's
a way to get more useful information.
As it turns out, glmmADMB's default

I did manage to dv-tape this from the front row, and thus
got pretty fair audio, but a slightly awkward camera angle.
NYU Media Lab had a tripod set up at the back, and were
apparently intending to webcast the results via real. They
were a little taken aback when I mentioned Richard's aversion
to propietary formats, and thanked me profusely for pointing
it out, and saving them grief.

Portable R?
Hello list,
A short time ago, I found
http://johnhaller.com/jh/useful_stuff/portable_apps_suite/, which
contains basically a complete set of office tools that can be run
*entirely* from a USB key. The concept is:
- find a Windows PC
- put in your USB key
- run OpenOffice, Firefox, Gaim, Nvu, Thunderbird, ... directly from
your USB key, with no app installation required
- save your files wherever
