screen wrapping
Hello all,
How can I increase/decrease the line length for screen wrapping?
Currently when I run the following the output appears to wrap at just
under 80 columns:

Using DBI and RMySQL
Dear All,
I am having a bit of problem using the DBI and RMySQL
package. I have already installed DBI but now I want
to connect to MySQL. So how do I do it. The CRAN
package repository does not have RMySQL windows binary
to install from?

R more Unix-like?
Is there a way to stream data into R so that it can be used in a
command pipe?
Most Unix commands read data via standard input and read the script
from the command line. For example:
$ seq 1 10 | sed -e 's/^/foo /'
$ seq 1 10 | awk '{print "foo " $1}'
$ seq 1 10 | perl -lane 'print "foo $F[0]"'
In contrast, R seems to read the script

SQL like manipulations on data frames
Is there a cheat-sheet anywhere that describes how to do SQL-like
manipulations on a data frame?
My knowledge of R is rather limited. But from my experience it seems
as though one can think of data frames as being similar to tables in
a database: there are rows, columns, and values. Also, one can
perform similar manipulations on a data frame as one can on a table.
For example:

large data set, error: cannot allocate vector
Why am I getting the error "Error: cannot allocate vector of size
512000 Kb" on a machine with 6 GB of RAM?
I'm playing with some large data sets within R and doing some simple
statistics. The data sets have 10^6 and 10^7 rows of numbers. R
reads in and performs summary() on the 10^6 set just fine. However,
on the 10^7 set, R halts with the error. My hunch is that

command completion?
Does R have command or object name completion?
R has several functions of modern shells built into it e.g. history
mechanism, command-line editing, emacs key bindings. However, it
doesn't seem to have command or object name completion. For example,
in bash I can begin typing a command and then press the tab key to
have the shell fill in the rest of the command (works for environment

and .First for options specific to that working directory.

help with writing output from two different arrays to two columns in an output file
Hi,
I am very new to R and I have written the following block of code to
generate a gamma distribution for variable x (which is an array) and a
function "y" whose array values depend on the individual array values of
"x".
The code is as follows:
n=1000
x=rgamma(n,1.5,2)
y=vector("numeric",n)
for (i in 1:n){
y[i]=(2937/50000*exp(-1/1000*x[i])/x[i])
}
now I want to

importing a list
Hi, all.
I'm trying to automate some regression operations in R leaving the
possibility to modify the predictors in the regression.
For example, I have saved in a list the results and then exported as a txt
file, in which we can modify the predictors, putting for example
lm(y~x^2) instead of having lm(y~x) as in the original model.
Now, I need to import in R the txt file as a list to

split the data.frame
Dear R folks:
I wonder anyone has a elegent way of doing what I need to do.
I have a data frame called with four columns: V1, V2, A1 and A2:
V1 V2 A1 A2
A B 1.2 2.0
A D 1.2 4.0
A C 2.4 2.2
What I need to do is to convert it into the following data frame with a new column x, where x is just the stacked up of A1 and A2 placed with respective V1 and V2 in the first two

Add text/numbers to x axis?
Is there any simple way to add text to the x axis in R? I have tried to
add simple characters in R without any greater sucess. As an example of
what I want to do is the added C in the following "dumb" plot (produced
with MacAnova using the option "dumb:T"):

Postscript query: plotting long vectors
Hi,
I have a query about the maximum length of vector that can be plotted
in one go in a postscript driver. Try the following code (in 1.7.0;
version details below):
t <- seq(from=0, to=4*pi, length=200000)
y <- sin(t)
postscript(file="o.ps")
plot(t, y, type="l")
dev.off()
If I view the postscript file o.ps in "gv", it takes many seconds

carpet plots
Hi all,
I wonder why there is so little software for carpet plots (german:
Rasterdiagramm) (Three dimensional plot (x, y, z), the 3rd dimension
(z) symbolized by colourgradients). Besides from one or the other non
free software I only found an OpenOffice macro, a combination of
Gnuplot and Excel (an Excel macro calling gnuplot)

Documentation Bug
Okay, going to try this one more time with pine (the GnuPG signing from
the Enigmail plugin for Thunderbird keeps getting rejected by
sourceforge). Right.
Anyway, the documentation (in several places) says the analyze option to
use GNUplot is "--residual-gnuplot", when the code actually checks for
"--residual-gnu-plot"....extra hyphen. i checked this late last night, but

Interest in R plotting capabilities
I'm a scheme and C user generally, I'm a bit wary of the large FORTRAN
content of the R language but aside from that issue it seems nice and simple
and easy to use.
What I want to do is find some GPL software to replace gnuplot,
and since R does all the calculating stuff that gnuplot does (probably
R is faster though I haven't tested) plus R has quite decent
plotting capabilities I

Gnuplot fit function in R
Hi there,
I'm new to R, coming from gnuplot for the plotting facility...
I'm just wondering if there is a equivalent to the fit function of gnuplot in R?
If not, s there any good resource on fitting gaussians into a curve?

I'm trying to run R from a webserver, which doesn't have an X server,
and produce pngs to go on a webpage, is this possible?
I'm doing it in gnuplot with

With $DISPLAY unset, I get the following error from R:

GNUplot to R conversion?
Hi,
I have some scripts creating GNUplot graphs that I would like to
convert to R. It would be a great help if there would be a
reasonable converter that takes over plot commands and initial
settings and put these into R commands (I'm an R beginner and
thus this kind of Kickstart would be helpful).
Remark: Asking Google for "gnuplot to R conversion" or similar things
does not
