On-demand importing of a package
Dear All,
in some functions of my package, I use the Matrix S4 class, as defined
in the Matrix package.
I don't want to depend on Matrix, however, because my package is
perfectly fine without Matrix, most of the functionality does not need
Matrix. Matrix is so included in the 'Suggests' line.
I load Matrix via require(), from the functions that really need it.
This mostly works

igraph package, version 0.5
igraph is a package for graphs and networks. It has a C core and
uses a simple and fast graph representation allowing millions
of vertices and edges.
NEW FEATURES:
- We use the ARPACK library for graph related eigenvalue problems,
like Page Rank calculation, Kleinberg's hub and authority scores,
eigenvector centrality, etc. There is also a generic interface

Intermittent crashes with inset `[<-` command
Valgrind (without gctorture) reports memory misuse:

Removing a list of Objects
Hi,
I have a simple beginner's question on removing a list of
objects. Say I have objects C243.Daily1, C243.Daily2...C243.Daily5 in my
workspace. I'd like to remove these without using rm five times.
So I write.
> a <- list(paste("C243.Daily",sep="",1:5))
> rm(a)
Obviously this wouldn't work, as it would only remove the object a.
But is there any way

Need help debugging R.
I originally posted this to R-help, but here is probably a better place.
I have a rather complex routine which works great in R.
Then I bootstrap it. After running a few minutes it typically segfaults,
though it happens very randomly.
This happens w/ 1.9.0 and 1.9.1 on Fedora1 and a Scyld (RH7.3) system.
Traces always point back to routines in src/main/memory.c, though often
not the same

Could .Primitive("[") stop forcing R_Visible = TRUE?
Hello,
The "[" primitive operator currently has the 'eval' flag set to 0 in
src/main/names.c. This means that the result of subsetting, whether
R-native or implemented by a method, will never be invisible().
This is a very reasonable default: if the user goes as far as to subset
a value, they probably want to see the result. Unfortunately, there
also exists at least one

RFC: 'igraph' package update and backward compatibility
Dear R developers,
I am seeking advice on some $subject matter.
My package will have an update soon, that is not backward compatible
with the current version. It will likely break much of the existing
code. Many (~50) packages depend on 'igraph' and they, too, will most
probably break with the new version.
My intended solution is, that I create a snapshot of the current
package, under

PROTECT help
I received the following note this AM. The problem is, I'm not quite
sure how to fix it.
Can one use PROTECT(coxlist(eval(PROTECT.... , do I create an
intermediate variable, or otherwise?
I'm willing to update the code if someone will give me a pointer to the
right documentation. This particular chunk was written when there was a
lot of change going on in the callback mechanism and

Intermittent crashes with inset `[<-` command
On an azure centos VM, I can reproduce this bug which reports either:
*** caught segfault ***
address 0x70000006a, cause 'memory not mapped' (crash)
Or
incompatible types (from builtin to integer) in subassignment type fix
(no crash)
Like Gabriel, I could not reproduce the bug on a mac laptop. Both R
versions 3.5.1.

Intermittent crashes with inset `[<-` command
The following code crashes after about 300 iterations on my?x86_64-w64-mingw32?machine on R 3.5.2 --vanilla.??
Others have duplicated this (see?https://github.com/tidyverse/magrittr/issues/190?if necessary), but I don't know how machine/OS-dependent it may be.??
If it doesn't crash for you, please try increasing the length of the x vector.

Running R on read-only file system, without temporary directory
Dear All,
I would like to do run R without having write permissions to any
directory on the system. It seems that I need to modify the R source
code for this, to make R start without creating a temporary directory.
So far, so good. But should I expect any more complications? Does R
really need the temporary directory that much?
Thanks,
Gabor

power law
Dear list,
Does anyone know how to fit the power law distribution?
I have the empirical distribution and would like to check whether it fits
power law (with the power estimated from the data).
Any hints are appreciated
Best regards

Clarifications please.
Hi
I think I have asked these questions earlier, but I been able to find
answers from the documentation (which I found poorly written in several
places). Will someone be kind enough to give me answers and enlighten me?
(as in explain with CODE?)
I want to embed R in my application and use the fPortfolio package for
carrying out risk management computations. Right now I'm reading the

S3 generics need identical signature?
Dear all,
"Writing R Extensions" explicitly says that
A method must have all the arguments of the generic, including ...
if the generic does.
A method must have arguments in exactly the same order as the generic.
If the generic specifies defaults, all methods should use the same
defaults.
This is clear. R CMD check even checks for this.
But then how is it possible that

Build a R call at C level
Hi All,
I was reading the R extension manual section 5.11 ( Evaluating R expression
from C) and I tried to build a simple call to the sum function. Please see
below.

language = "C",
sig = c(x = "SEXP"), body = "
SEXP e = PROTECT(lang2(install(\"sum\"), x));
SEXP ans = PROTECT(eval(e, R_GlobalEnv));

I want to get a reference to this time series object
I'm trying to get a reference to this object in C
SWX.RET[1:6,c("SBI,"SPI","SII")]
While i am able to access and use a plain SWX.RET object, I'm getting
confused on how to create an object with the array subscripts like above.
Here is what I tried to do. It doesn't work because "[" is obviously not an
operation or function on SWX.RET. So how do I
