setwd in windows
Dear friends - windows R 3.3.3 - sorry to ask a simple question - but I
cannot make setwd work properly in scripts
In the example below I have made a directory in C (firstdir) and a
directory in that (secdir) and the intention is to change directory to
the second from the first - it works when I put the entire path but not
the tilde - what am I missing? I was around rwf 2.14 as per the help

Dear friends,
I will be very happy if anyone tell me the way to change work directory
permanently?
I mean not use the function setwd() which can only change temporary, when
you close the console, it will the old directory.
Sys.setenv(R_USER = '') also doesn't work.

Command Line Prompt Symbol
Hi
I run R in Windows.
Is there a simple way of changing the prompt symbol ">" to, say, "R>" ?
(Not just for a temporary session, but every time R command window is
opened.) The documentation of doing this is rather "sparse".
Much appreciated for your assistance.

accessing files from subfolders
Hi,
There must be an easy way to do this, but I'm not finding it..
I'd just like to know the syntax to move up and down folder levels, without necessarily entering a full file path. Also, how to construct file and folder paths using variables.
For example 1, if I wanted to print to the screen the contents of a file called myFile.txt using the bash shell, I'd use the following:

Replacing backslashes with slashes
Hello,
I've seen this question asked in the archives but no clear reply or solution
provided. So, just to be sure it is not possible in R: Can I replace
backslashes with slashes in a string ?
I am writing a GUI for R with the Rpad library. I have a "browse" button for
data loading and Windows return a path string with backslashes. I need to
convert them into slashes to use the

Problem in shiny writing a .txt file
Hi all!
I'm developing a shiny app and I have problems when I wanna write a .txt
file.
First of all, I change the directory in order to work in a temporal one:
wd <- tempdir()
setwd( wd )
res.path <- paste0( wd, "/OUT/" )
dir.create( res.path )
Just before calling the function that fails, I remove, if exist, the old
files of the directory:
file.remove( paste0(

Hello,
I just wanted to ask if you had time to look into this bug I am encountering and if there is anything else I can do?
For now in order to get rid of these 3 unsynched files shall I do the same method that was suggested to me in this thread?
Thanks,
Mabi

How to do platform independent system calls?
Dear R experts,
I hope everyone has had a happy easter break.
Recently my work included writing R function that need to call external tools.
I did this using R's system function for example:
system( paste( 'tool', '-input', path_to_input, '-output',
path_to_output, '-other_switch', some_val ) )
I have two question about this:
1) Is there a way to implement

Metadata socket read error
Howdy,
I've had tinc working great for over a year now. They just made some network changes at work and now I'm only able to make a connection for a few seconds(30) or so before I get a "Metadata socket read error". I wan't to think that's some kind of firewall timeout thing but I'm not sure. I have no control over the FW or network at work so I'm not clear on

Hi mabi,
Some questions:
-Did you by any chance change the cluster.quorum-type option from the
default values?
-Is filename.shareKey supposed to be any empty file? Looks like the file
was fallocated with the keep-size option but never written to. (On the 2
data bricks, stat output shows Size =0, but non zero Blocks and yet a
'regular empty file').
-Do you have some sort of a

Rgui, Startup, HOME, R_USER, ...
Hi,
Main objective: Let Rgui find my ~/.Rprofile and ~/.Renviron files,
where ~ is equal to getwd("~").
I have few comments/questions:
(A) On my WinXP Pro installation, the system environment variable
'HOME' is not availble to R, e.g. Sys.getenv("HOME") is empty. I
believe this is default case (correct me if I'm wrong). However, if I

A hint to start ESS-xemacs
I'm trying to use ESS & xemacs under debian linux testing and KDE.
My problem is that I didn't find any document in the internet explaining a
**step by step** session with R and xemacs.
The (wrong) procedure I follow (to no avail!) is:
1) I start R in a terminal window;
2) I start xemacs and open a file with the extension .R (test.R);
3) I issue M-x R RET and I can see an Rd new

"attach" in R corr. to Spus one
Hi,
I am a newbie to R, just trying to switch from
Splus. I am wondering to know if there is any such
command in R as "attach" in Splus which can be used to
attach the full directory.
Also, any idea/referrence about, how to load c
functions in R would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,

R and R commander
Hi,
I am a student studying Biostatistics at University. We have been advised to install R and R commander. I managed to do this successfully, except I wasn't able to complete the final step - which would enable both R and R commander to launch when I open the R icon on my desktop.
However, I haven't been able to save it and for this to work.
The last instructions we were given are:
