conditional selection with Factors
Hi All, I want to select a level of a factor variable from a dataset. I have the folowing data: dataset: use factor: month (use$month, levels=February, July) > use[1:5,] month registration use department size 1 February KKG151GP Y Safety 1.6 To select February I tried: > use[use$month=="February"] Error in "[.data.frame"(use, use$month ==

Create factors in R for more than one variable
Hi all, I'm using R2.0 on linux. I have fixedwidth data consisting of 50 questions on a likert scale. The raw data is coded 1 to 5. I used read.fwf() to read in the data. The problem is that factors isn't created automatically, because the data is coded numerically. To make factors out of the 50 questions I must do: V1 <- factor(V1) I don't want to do it 50 times. Is there a

Definition of AIC (Akaike information criterion) for normal error models
Dear R users (r-help@r-project.org), The definition of AIC (Akaike information criterion) for normal error models has just been changed. Please refer to the paper below on this matter. Eq.(22) is the new definition. The essential part is RSS(n+q+1)/(n-q-3); it is close to GCV. The paper is temporarily available at the "Papers In Press" place. Kunio Takezawa(2012): A Revision of

definition of "dffits"
R-users E-mail: r-help@r-project.org Hi! R-users. I am just wondering what the definition of "dffits" in R language is. Let me show you an simple example. function() { library(MASS) xx <- c(1,2,3,4,5) yy <- c(1,3,4,2,4) data1 <- data.frame(x=xx, y=yy) lm.out <- lm(y~., data=data1, x=T) lev1 <- lm.influence(lm.out)$hat sig1 <-

Cubic splines in package "mgcv"
re: Cubic splines in package "mgcv" I don't have access to Gu (2002) but clearly the function R(x,z) defined on p126 of Simon Wood's book is piecewise quartic, not piecewise cubic. Like Kunio Takezawa (below) I was puzzled by the word "cubic" on p126. As Simon Wood writes, this basis is not actually used by mgcv when specifying bs="cr". Maybe the point is

"Rcmd SHLIB" does not work
R-users E-mail: r-help at stat.math.ethz.ch Hi! I would like to produce DLL files to be linked to R objects on Windows98SE. The source files are written in Fortran77. I input the command below on R console. Rcmd SHLIB aaa.f The result is: Error: syntax error Does this mean that "Rcmd SHLIB aaa.f" contains symtax error, or "aaa.f" contains it? Or do I need to do

corrupted smoothing kernel ?
I am trying to use the "kernel" function. To understand how it works I tried out some of the examples. None of them works as shown in the following: > kernel("daniell", 50) # Error in kernel("daniell", 50) : unused argument(s) (50) > kernel("daniell", 10) # Error in kernel("daniell", 10) : unused argument(s) (10) >

Cubic splines in package "mgcv"
R-users E-mail: r-help@r-project.org My understanding is that package "mgcv" is based on "Generalized Additive Models: An Introduction with R (by Simon N. Wood)". On the page 126 of this book, eq(3.4) looks a quartic equation with respect to "x", not a cubic equation. I am wondering if all routines which uses cubic splines in mgcv are based on this quartic

Estimating QAIC using glm with the quasibinomial family
Hello R-list. I am a "long time listener - first time caller" who has been using R in research and graduate teaching for over 5 years. I hope that my question is simple but not too foolish. I've looked through the FAQ and searched the R site mail list with some close hits but no direct answers, so... I would like to estimate QAIC (and QAICc) for a glm fit using the

bilinear and non linear
Dear all, there are R packages able to simulate or estimate bilinear model for time series? I know it is an open problem, but do exist something for very simplified bilinear models? Alternatively, what kinfd of non linear time series models are performed in R? If R is not able, could someone suggest me for some commercial softwares to deal with bilinear models? i'm afraid of a negative

aov documentation page: question
Dear all I was looking at the aov documentation page and came across the following which seems like a contradiction to me: " This provides a wrapper to |lm| for fitting linear models to balanced or unbalanced experimental designs." (I presume 'This' refers to aov) and "|aov| is designed for balanced designs, and the results can be hard to interpret without

long filenames (8.3) issue
Hi there, We map a Sun Microsystems (Solaris 9) drive to a Windows 2003 server. This works fine except for the long UNIX (tm) filenames that are mapped as truncated 8.3 filenames on the MS server. Needless to say for backup purposes this defeats the object. I have scanned the archives but must be looking in the wrong places because I am unable to find a solution to this problem. Can anyone

Nonparametric Question
Dear Sirs, My name is Marcelo Grimaldi and I work for GE Lighting Brazil in Six Sigma Program. In order to accomplish a statistical project I need to generate exact tables for the Kruskal-Wallis statistic ("Three or More Populations Location Test") and I wonder if R could help me. In the past I have heard of generating tables for Wilcoxon statistic using R. Could you help me ? Thank
