symbolic math
Hi all!
Does anyone knows if it exists a "symbolic math" package in R, that allows to compute derivatives, integrals, etc.?
Does exist a freeware version of Maple?
Cheers,
Marco

Beginner plot and map questions
Hi,
I have not been able to find answers to these questions in the FAQs,
manuals, or R-help archives. If answers are available somewhere, please
direct me to them.
1.) Is there a way to convert a table (e.g. represented as a data frame)
to a function, specifying which columns are input and which column is
output? It would seem that this would be useful for plotting
experimental results,

probs in installing packages with R 2.2.0
Dear R users.
I was wondering if you could help me with this error message I get when I try to install packages.
I just installed R (the latest version, R 2.2.0) on my laptop (windows), and I was trying to install packages intwo ways:
1) Packages > Install Package(s)...
2) Packages > Install Package(s) from local zip files...
, but in both ways I get the following error message:

importing shapefiles into spatstat
Dear R users,
I am using spatstat to analyze point patterns (tree locations). I would
like to import the shapefile with the study area polygons (six total) into R
and use it to create the window for the spatstat analysis. I do not simply
want to use a rectangle because the study areas spread out over 40000 ha.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

fast multipole methods(FMM)/fast Gauss transfrorm(FGT)/improved fast gauss transform (IGFT)
I'm just curious, but wondering if there has been any work in making
these algorithms available in R. They are aimed at accelerating
matrix-vector products using approximation ideas, and might be useful in
applications such as kernel machines, Gaussian processes/kriging.
Thanks

New CRAN package sp: classes and methods for spatial data
We're happy to announce the CRAN release of "sp", an R package which
has new-style classes and methods for spatial data, version 0.7-9.
Spatial data types that sp implements are: points, grids, lines, and
polygons (i.e., rings) optionally with holes. Methods include
+ the usual print, summary, plot, [, [[, $, ...
+ coercion between types (e.g. points and grids, matrices,

gauss fit with outlier removal
I have distribution that are gaussian to a good approximation. I fit a
gaussian to these distributons. Once in a while there is an outlier. Could
someone suggest a robust method (R package already?) that removes those
outliers and redoes the gaussian fit to get a better fit? Thanks.

Looking for R Equivalent of Gauss Statements
Hi,
I am translating some Gauss code to R. Gauss has an interesting way of
handling constraints. Observe the following code snipplet:
e1 = x[.,23] .eq 0; @ remove obs with Regular Hours = 0 @
e2 = x[.,12] .gt 1; @ remove obs with non-regular work status @
e3 = x[.,4] .lt 15; @ remove obs with agricultural and mining
industry code (< 15)@
esum = e1 + e2 + e3;
e = esum .gt 0; @

gauss.hermite?
The search at www.r-project.org mentioned a function
"gauss.hermite{rmutil}". However, 'install.packages("rmutil")'
produced, 'No package "rmutil" on CRAN.' How can I find the current
status of "gauss.hermite" and "rmutil"?
Thanks,

R equivalent to Fortran, GAUSS, or Perl's "goto"
Does R have something equivalent to the "goto" in Perl?
If so, can you please tell me what it is? I cannot find
it in the Ref Manual or the Language Manual.
Thanks.

gauss.hermite function
Hi,
I am trying to find a function that returns simply the weights and
points of an n point gauss hermite integeration, so that I can use them
to fit a non-standard likelihood.
I have found some documentation for the function 'gauss.hermite' written
by jim lindley, but can't find the actual binary on CRAN
I'm aware there are lots of functions like glmm, glmmML etc to fit mixed
