Equation for the standard error of a predicted score for a cross-classified model
All,
I have several years of longitudinal test scores for students (many who
switch schools at various points in time). I am using a mixed-effects model
with crossed random effects to model student trajectories. The model
includes time at level 1 and students crossed with schools at level 2. When
I run the model I get the posterior variances on the intercepts and slopes
for students and schools,

Data sets with usage in documentation object but not in code
All,
I recently made some changes to my package and ran R CMD check, but I
am getting a warning regarding my data sets.
I am running R 2.6.1 I have an image (.RData) file containing five
data sets in the data subdirectory and an .Rd file for each of the
data sets in the man subdirectory. When I run the check I get the
warning

New R package plink for separate calibration IRT linking
The first version of the package plink has been uploaded to CRAN.
plink is a package for conducting unidimensional IRT scaling and chain
linking for multiple groups for single-format or mixed-format common
items. The package supports eight IRT models and four calibration
methods.
Dichotomous Models:
1PL, 2PL, 3PL
Polytomous Models:

Problem with a if statement inside a function
I have a really long functions, and at the end of the function, I am using a
if statement
to tag certain keywords based on whether they have certain values contained
in them.
However, the if statement doesn't seem to work.
When I had split up the commands into various functions, it worked fine, but
I'm not sure
what going on now that it's combined into a single function.

[LLVMdev] job opportunity
Hello everybody,
If anybody is about to graduate and is looking for a research
position, ICL at the University of Tennessee (http://icl.cs.utk.edu)
is looking for a compilers person. We are looking for somebody with
practical experience in compiler technology and some understanding of
linear algebra.
Sorry for spamming the list with non-development content, but I hope a

problem pasting into Illustrator CS2
To Whom it May Concern:
I have been using R version 2.6.2 for awhile now, installed on a
PowerMac G5 running OS 10.4.11 I typically get Quartz graphics
output from R into Adobe Illustrator CS2 simply by copying and
pasting. Upon upgrading to R version 2.7.0, I now receive an error
from Illustrator when trying to paste R generated graphics from the
Quartz window into Illustrator. I do

L'abbe plot
I cannot seem to get a L'abbe plot to work on R. I do not understand what
the X coordinates, or alternatively an object of class metabin, is
supposed to mean. What is a class of metabin?

how to make read in a vector of 0s and 1s with no space between them
Hi all,
Probably a rudimentary question. I have a flat file that looks like
this (the real one has ~10e6 elements):
10110100101001011101011
and I want to pull that into R as a vector, but with each digit being
it's own element. There are no separators between the digits. How can
I accomplish this? Thanks in advance!

PAM clustering (using triangular matrix)
Hi,
I'm trying to use a similarity matrix (triangular) as input for pam() or
fanny() clustering algorithms.
The problem is that this algorithms can only accept a dissimilarity
matrix, normally generated by daisy().
However, daisy only accept 'data matrix or dataframe. Dissimilarities
will be computed between the rows of x'.
Is there any way to say to that your data are already a

Bug fix and compatibility patches for 1.3.0pre4
Hi all,
I tried 1.3.0pre4 with ICL on Windows and found some issues. Not sure if
this is the right place to submit patches, but someone suggested this on
the apparently dead SourceForge patch tracker.
The first two are quite straight forward:
- The ICL patch fixes a typo in bitmath.h and adds
FLAC__bitwriter_write_zeroes to the external declarations in bitwriter.c.
- The Ogg patch replaces

skip non-sequential lines using scan?
Hi all,
Is there a way to skip non-sequential lines using the "skip" argument
in the scan function?
E.g., I have a matrix with 100 rows and 1e7 columns. I open a
connection and want to read only lines 5, 7, 9, etc [i.e.,
seq(5,99,2)]
It might seem that the syntax to do this would be something like this
(if only the "skip" allowed vectors in the same way colClasses does in

how to get remote ESS graphics to work?
Hi all,
My graduate student is logging onto my macpro and running R through
ESS aquamacs (with Mx ssh and then Mx ess-remote). Everything is
working fine until we get to graphing.
We are trying to give him the ability to look at graphics
interactively. The ESS manual is not too helpful: "If you run X11 (See
Section 13.3.2 [X11], page 68, X-windows) on both the local and remote

Trouble installing pwr package
Hi all,
I'm having trouble getting access to the pwr. This is on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx,
64 bit.
I'm installing pwr via packages.install('pwr'), and loading it via
library(pwr), both of which appear successful.
Strangely, I never get access to the pwr object in R.
I tried installing it to /usr/local/lib/R/site-library and
~/R/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-library.
I also tried installing it

non-positive definite matrix remedies?
Hi all,
For computational reasons, I need to estimate an 18x18 polychoric
correlation matrix two variables at a time (rather than trying to
estimate them all simultaneously using ML). The resulting polychoric
correlation matrix I am getting is non-positive definite, which is
problematic because I'm using this matrix later on as if it were a
legitimately estimated correlation matrix (in order

two questions re: the use of lattice

I have two questions regarding the use of lattice. First some code:

"s_lsk", "s_lML", "s_mlsk", "s_mlML", "s_la8",

Multi-page plots (Trellis)
Dear All -
I would like to make multi-page plots, but my plots are writing over one
another - thus leaving just the last plot. Here is what I am doing:
pollutionRose(temp, "nox", type="hour")
update(trellis.last.object(), layout =c(3,3,3) )
I would like 24 plots with 9 plots/page (the last page would not have 9
plots)
Is there any way to "force" layout to make 3

Extracting a data.frame from HTML code
Dear all,
I'd like to use R to read in data from the web. I need some help finding an
efficient way to strip the HTML tags and reformat the data as a data.frame
to analyze in R.
I'm currently using readLines() to read in the HTML code and then grep() to
isolate the block of HTML code I want from each page, but this may not be
the best approach.
A short example:
