Reading multi-line FWF data
I keep getting these fixed-width format (FWF) data files where variables for a single subject are spread across multiple lines and each line has a different format (apparently created with SAS or SPSS). Controlling widths in write.fwf()
Is there a way to handle the widths of values being written to a file using wrtite.fwf() ? For example, I used read.fwf(file, width.vector) to read a file. After making the necessary data manipulation, I want to write the data to a new file in the same width.vector format. Is there a way to specify this? Read FWF, problem and solution?

Any way to get read.table.ffdf() (in the ff package) to pass colClasses or comment.char parameters through to read.fwf() ?

issue with ... in write.fwf in gdata
Dear R-list This is just message to inform that the there is an issue with write.fwf in the gdata library (from version 2.5.0 on). It does not seem to accept further arguments to write.table like "eol" as the help file indicates as it stops when executing tmp <- lapply(x, format.info, ...). Great package though - I use it a lot except for this function :) See example below. >

read.fwf, perl on win
i just used read.fwf (which calls perl) and i noticed something. i also have mat;lab installed on this machine, and matlab also installs a version of perl, but a different one. additionally, matlab puts its bin directory in the system path. so, if one does not canerully set the path, r will call the matlab verion of perl, and things won't work. if anybody is collection a list of pitfalls,

Write.fwf works from Mac, throws different number of row error in Windows

Bug (?) in read.fwf
Hi, I'm trying to use read.fwf temp = read.fwf ("Raw data.txt", widths = c (11, 21, 10, rep (16, 6)) ,skip = 2, n = 2, stringsAsFactors = FALSE, strip.white = TRUE) but no matter what I do the strings are turned into factors. I believe it's the "n=2" parameter that causes the problem as it seems to work without this. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance,

skipping columns with read.fwf?
I have a file in fwf. It is rather large, about 40,000 rows and 40 variables (columns). I only need about 10 variables form the data set for the analysis at hand. Unfortunately, these 10 variables are not contiguous in the file, for example, the first is position 1-8, the next position 25-27, then 40. Is there a way to read the selected varaibles that I need without reading in the entire data
