plot.lm: "Cook's distance" label can overplot point labels
The following code demonstrates an annoyance with plot.lm():
library(DAAGxtras)
x11(width=3.75, height=4)
nihills.lm <- lm(log(time) ~ log(dist) + log(climb), data = nihills)
plot(nihills.lm, which=5)
OR try the following
xy <- data.frame(x=c(3,1:5), y=c(-2, 1:5))
plot(lm(y ~ x, data=xy), which=5)
The "Cook's distance" text overplots the label for the point with the

problem with comparing a part of string with whole string
Hi all,
I got one problem with comparing strings like if any string is like
"*RIGHT, EPICARDIUM: FOCUS, GRAY-WHITE, SINGLE, APPROX 0.6 CM IN DIAMETER*."
and i have to compare "*GRAY-WHITE*" with the above string
or otherwise i have to compare " *TUMOR BENIGN*" this string
with
"*MEDULLRY TUMOR BENIGN,TYP PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA*"

vector-factor operation
I found myself wanting to average a vector [vec] within each level of a
factor [Fac], returning a vector of the same length as vec. After a
while I realised that
lm1 <- lm(vec ~ Fac)
fitted(lm1)
did what I want.
But there must be another way to do this, and it would be good to be
able to apply other functions than mean() in this way.
Cheers, Murray

arrows on contour lines
Hello everybody
I'm using contour() to draw streamlines of potential flow, eg
jj <- seq(from= -4, to=4,len=20)
jj <- outer(jj,jj,function(x,y){x})+1i*outer(jj,jj,function(x,y){y})
f <- function(x){x^2}
contour(Im(f(jj)), nlevels=44 , labels="")
How best to put arrows on the contour lines to show the direction of flow?
(ie I want contour lines looking like

which duplicated rows to delete
Hi
Say I've this vector with several duplicates
>x<-c(1,2,3,4,2,6,2,8,2,3)
>which(duplicated(x))
[1] 5 7 9 10 11
But what I realy want is somthing like:
List({2,5,7}, {3,10}, ...)
Then from each sublist I can specify which of the duplicate items to drop
res<-NULL
for(vec in myDuplicateList)
res<-rbind(res, subset(data[vec,], myCrit))
I'll get some of the way by

Help with "recode" and "factor" functions
I have a data set with seven inputs. Four of which are categorical. For my
midterm, my professor wants us to scale all the inputs. This means, I
pressume, that I have to use 'recode' or 'factor' to transform the
categorical data in numerical. For example, one input variable is
'race=(b,w,h,o)'. I just want to assign a numerical value to all
'b,w,h,o'. I

matrix problem
Hi Everyone,
I am running into a problem with matrices. I use R version 2.4.1 and
an older version.
The problem is this:
m<-matrix(ncol=3,nrow=4)
m[,1:3]<-runif(n=4)
That does what I expect; it fills up the rows of the matrix with the
data vector
> m

Spliting a huge vector
Dear R users,
I have a huge vector that I would like to split into
unequal slices. However, the only way I can do this is
to create another huge vector to define the groups
that are used to split the original vector, e.g.
# my vector is this
a.vector <- seq(2, by=5, length=100)
# indices where I would like to slice my vector
cut.values <- c(30, 50, 100, 109, 300, 601, 803)
# so I have to

Object Browser
What's the best object browser?
Dear all,
I have tried all the popular R IDE or editors like Eclipse, Komodo, JGR,
Revolution...
They all have fancy fucntions like auto completion, syntax highlight....
BUT, I JUST WANT A OBJECT BROWSER!
The easiest way to view objects in R console is fix(), but you have no
global view of all the objects in the workspace.
Revolution has the best object

Bootstrapping help
Hello,
I am new to using R and I am having problems get boot() to work properly. Here is what I am trying to do:
I have statistic called "cs". cs takes a data matrix (154 x 5) and calculates 12 different scores for me. cs outputs the data as a vector (12 x 1). cs doesn't really use weights, per se, however I have included this as one of the 2 arguments cs can take.
I try

Multi-line plots with matrices in R
Hello all,
I'm a new user of R, experienced with Octave/MATLAB and therefore
struggling a bit with the new syntax.
One of the easy things in Octave or MATLAB is to plot multiple lines or
sets of points by using a matrix where either the columns or the rows
contain the y-values to be plotted. Both packages automatically give
each line/points their own unique colour, character etc.
I'm

common axis label in multiple plot area
Hello
A very short question: Using multiple plots with par(mfrow=c(3,3)), how
can I get R to indicate one common y- and x-axis label? I tried to use
text() in par, but this is then overwritten when I plot the graphs.

plotting the regression coefficients
Hi Petr and Richard;
Thanks for your responses and supports. I just faced a different problem.
I have the following R codes and work well.
p <- ggplot(a, aes(x=Phenotypes, y=Metabolites, size=abs(Beta),
colour=factor(sign(Beta)))) +
theme(axis.text=element_text(size = 5))
p1<-p+geom_point()
p2<-p1+theme(panel.grid.major = element_blank(),
panel.grid.minor = element_blank(),

plotting the regression coefficients
Hi
After melt you can change levels of your factor variable. Again with the toy example.
> levels(temp$variable)
[1] "y1" "y2" "y3" "y4"
> levels(temp$variable) <- levels(temp$variable)[c(2,4,1,3)]
> levels(temp$variable)
[1] "y2" "y4" "y1" "y3"
>
And you will get graphs with this new levels ordering.

mystery "158"
Well, ?factor does not say anything about this behaviour (assigning numeric code instead of level of factor). And actually if you do assignment for whole vector the result is different (vector in data frame is changed to factor).

> head(temp2,2)
