Intern at Barron's ! -- use statistics for investigative financial journalism
We're seeking interns for the summer of 2014 here at Barron's the Dow Jones newsweekly that's searched out good investments and financial frauds since 1921, when our founder exposed Charles Ponzi. We're at the center of the financial world in New York and can pay a bit of a stipend to cover the city's high living costs. Here's the blurb: Do some good. Intern at

Internship Opportunity at New York financial weekly
It's not too early for statistically-adept students to think about underpaid, but life-altering, internships for the summer of 2012. In fact, after November 1st it may be too late to apply here at Barron's. This will be the second summer we've offered paid internships, which means that applicants can now poll the hapless folks who interned this past summer. Contact me, Bill Alpert, and

Repeated measures 2-way anova -- robustness question
I'm a journalist, wondering what questions to ask about a study that contrasted the impact on serum cholesterol of two drugs. This was a 40 dog study: 5 treatment blocks of 4 dogs each, randomized to: a control block, two blocks at different doses of drug1 and two at corresponding doses of drug2. Analysis was 2-factor repeated measures ANOVA on treatment group and sampling time. Linear

Important note for AGI with PHP newbies
I say this note is important only because I (a AGI PHP newbie) was tormented by this problem for many an hour, even though I'm sure it's documented somewhere or obvious to more experienced users. So as I was experimenting with AGI in PHP scripting I was baffled by why Asterisk was properly receiving AGI commands written to stdout but always returning "510 invalid command" to the

freenode #asterisk IRC channel identd problem
Sorry to ask this question here since it's related to IRC and not Asterisk, but I am having trouble logging into the #asterisk IRC channel on freenode and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and solved it. So here's the situation: Whenever I try to login to the #asterisk channel I get a message like "you must be identified to login to this channel." So after doing

SoxMix - Fails to Execute
I have Asterisk configured to record calls. Both in and out record ok but SoxMix fails to join the two files. The error from the CLI is as follows: Execute of ( nice -n 19 soxmix /var/spool/asterisk/monitor/Support-in.wav /var/spool/asterisk/monitor/Support-out.wav /var/spool/asterisk/monitor/Support.wav && rm -f /var/spool/asterisk/monitor/Support-* ) & failed. creating a variable using concatenation
A general problem i run into, i know there must be a simple solution. I like to create a variable by appending a 1 for example, (i need to loop later on from 1 to X, thus the reason for this). So i assign the variable vplot with this value, however it has quotes and when i use it in a barplot, it throws an error. but the tcenter$X1 does exist, its an element of a data frame. So if i type

assigning creating missing rows and values
I have a dataset where I have missing times (11:00 and 16:00). I would like the outputs to include the missing time so that the final time vector looks like "realt" and has the previous time's value. Ex. If meas at time 15:30 is 0.45, then the meas for time 16:00 will also be 0.45. meas are the measurements and times are the times at which they were taken. meas<-runif(18)

plot region ??
hi, i am using the barplot function, but i have problems with the plot region when adjusting the bar width manually. if you only want to plot 2 bars the default barwidth is to wide (aesthetically speaking). by adjusting width and xlim one can actually produce narrow bars, but then the plotted graph is not in the center of the plot region, which means that for example the title of the plot

matlab style plotting in R
Hello I was wondering how I can achieve matlab style plotting in R, in the sense that matlab allows you to plot multiple sets of variables within the same x-y axes. plot in R does not seem to cater for this. I tried 'overplot' from the gplots package but this assumes different y axes for the variables. any suggestions would be very appreciated Maria [[alternative HTML version

a question of alphabetical order
Hi all, In Spanish vowels with accent like ?, ?, ... doesn't affect to the alphabetical order of vector of strings. I mean, a or ? don't matter for establishing the alphabetical order. Nevertheless, while working with R order, here is what I get. Given a file transport.txt medio#variable avi?n#34 barco#33 bicicleta#3 ?ngulo#37 cami?n#54 coche#23 tren#67 > toPlot <-

multcomp and lme
I suppose that multcomp in R and multicomp in S-Plus are related and it appears that it is possible to use multicomp with lme in S-Plus given the following correspondence on s-news sally.rodriguez at philips.com 12:57 p.m. 24/04/03 -0400 7 [S] LME summary and multicomp.default() Is it possible to use multicomp with lme in R and if so what is the syntax from a simple readily available

Hmisc?
I was looking for an R function to turn a matrix into a LaTeX table; did an R site search using Jon Barron's machine and turned up the latex() function in the Hmisc package. But the Hmisc package is an Splus package, and appears not to be available for R --- there is no hint of it in the list of contributed packages on CRAN. I had a look at the Hmisc package (via statlib) and there was no

Recoding variables based on reference values in data frame
I'm new to R (previously used SAS primarily) and I have a genetics data frame consisting of genotypes for each of 300+ subjects (ID1, ID2, ID3, ...) at 3000+ genetic locations (SNP1, SNP2, SNP3...). A small subset of the data is shown below: SNP_ID SNP1 SNP2 SNP3 SNP4 Maj_Allele C G C A Min_Allele T A T G ID1 CC GG CT AA ID2 CC GG CC AA ID3 CC GG nc AA

multicomp functions that in S but not in R
I am using R for a class which uses S. Often I can not find functions that in S but not in R, example, multicomp(). What is your advise. multicomp
Dear R people, I have heard rumors of a function called (I believe) multicomp in S+ for doing multiple comparisons for linear models. It doesn't seem to be in the version of R I am using, 0.90.0. Is there something equivalent to this in R, or does it simply not exist? I see there is are more recent versions of R. For my platform, SuSE Linux, the most recent rpm available appears to be

Which function to use for multiple comparison?
[Moderator: This was erronously sent to R-announce, and filtered fortunately ] Hi, This is my first time to use R. I'm wondering which function I can use to do multiple comparison. I have an lm object and want to do multiple comparison based on this object. Splus has a function multicomp() but I could not find a similar one in R. Thanks in advance. Really appreciate it. Julie

JPG issue
Ok, it's taken me a while, but here's what seems to be the problem. In OSX I see a lock on the file. If that lock is ON, it disappears. But what is that lock and where did it come from.... Is it like a read only lock? On Thu, Mar 30, 2017 at 11:04 AM Curtis Vaughan <cavaughan at gmail.com> wrote: > Ok, here's what seems to be going on. When a JPG is put into a share it >

Multiple comparisons in R; multicomp
Is there a fonction for multiple comparison tests (similar to "multicomp" in Splus) in a package of R? Thanks in advance for any hint...
