Newton-Raphson
Dear all,
I want to solve a score function by using Newton-Raphson algorithm. Is there such a fucntion in R? I know there's one called optim, but it seems only doing minimizing or maximizing.
Thanks,

smoothing line and a pair of confidence intervals
Hi R Users,
I am very new to R and would like to do something quick if possible, please
help!
Suppose I have a data set of y versus x, how can I generate a smoothing line
of y versus x (for example, using loess)
and at the same time, generate a pair of confidence intervals for the
smoothing or mean plus/minus standard deviation?

Constrained cubic smoothing spline
Hello everone,
Anyone who knows how to force a cubic smoothing spline to pass through a particular point?
I found on website someone said that we can use "cobs package" to force the spline pass through certain points or impose shape constraints (increasing, decreasing). However, this package is using B-spline and can only do linear and quadratic

nonparametric logistic regression based on locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (lowess)
Dear UseRs:
Recently, I have read an article regarding the association between age and
lymph node metastases.

In statistical analysis, the authors stated "Because a nonlinear
relationship between age and lymph node involvement was expected based on
existing literature, lymph node involvement was also regressed on age using

Smooth monotone estimation on R
Hi all,
I'm looking for smooth monotone estimation packages, preferably using splines.
I downloaded the 'cobs' package and intend to use it, but since it offers only quadratic splines based on L1 minimization, I'd like to compare its performance to that of a more 'mainstream' cubic-spline, L2-norm minimizing spline. Preferably a smoothing spline.
Does anyone know of such

does glusterfs implement vfs api ?
Hi,
Does GlusterFS implement the Linux VFS functionality.
I know its a user space FS, but user space FS should also implement VFS
funtions.
Is this true also to GlusterFS ?
Thanks

How to estimate a hazard ratio using an external hazard function
Hi,
I would like to compare the hazard functions of two samples using the
Cox proportional hazards model. For sample 1 I have individual time-to-
event data. For sample 2 I don't have individual data, but grouped
data that allows to obtain a hazard function.
I am wondering if there is an R function that allows to obtain a
hazard ratio of the two hazard funtions (under the

automatically jpeg output
Dear R users,
I used R to draw many histograms and I would like to automatically save
them into a jpeg file. I tried the following code since I know .ps file
could be saved like this way:
postscript("AYA_ELA.jpeg",horizontal=F,onefile=T)
......#some funtions inside here
dev.off()
There was a jpeg file, however, there is no pictures inside. Any
suggestion?
Thanks.

Interrater and intrarater variability (intraclass correlation coefficients)
Hello!
I want to calculate the intra- and interrater reliability of my study. The design is very simple, 5 raters rated a diagnostic score 3 times for 19 patients.
Are there methods/funtions in R? I only found packages to calculate interrater variability and intraclass correlation coefficients for matrices of n*m (n subjects, m raters) - I have n subjects, m raters and r repetitions.

help about fitdistr funtion
Hi,
I have a variable X classified in a lot of groups and I need to run the
[fitdistr] funtion for each group. I tried with the [by] or the [tapply]
funtions because my data is organize in two columns (variable and the
groups), but neither of these command work. If somebody have a tip to help
me up I really appreciate it.

GSL in C code for R
Dear fellow R users,
I am now investing time in learning how to use compiled C code to produces functions that can be used in R. I am just starting, and there is much that I need to learn, so I have a question that might be straight forward. I am learning how to use function in the C library GSL (gnu scientific library), to write C code, that I then plant to use in R. Is there any problem in

speed and connection problems after samba upgrade - RH 5 -> RH 5.1, samba 3.0.23c -> 3.0.25b
Hi,
recently we upgraded a central RHEL 5 fileserver to the latest RH EL 5.1
rpms, including samba. (samba-3.0.23c-2.el5.2 update to
samba-3.0.25b-1.el5_1.4)
Now some users have the problem, that opening a word or excel file saved
on a samba share takes up to 30 seconds. Today I could verify this on
the users desktop XP PC.
This problem occures only from time to time, so it may be also a

Interrater and intrarater variability (intraclass correlationcoefficients)
It sounds as thought you are interested in Hoyt's Anova which is a form
of generalizability theory. This is usually estimated using by getting
the variance components from ANOVA.

What is the function for "smoothing splines with the smoothing parameter selected by generalized maximum likelihood?
Dear all,
I am new to R, and I am a biotechnologist, I want to fit a smoothing spline
with smoothing parameter selected by generalized maximum likelihood. I was
wondering what function implement this, and, if possible how I can find the
fitted results for a certain point (or predict from the fitted spline if
this is the correct language)

Making Syslinux boot with missing keyboard, but not disabled keyboard.
Hello together,
first thanks a lot for your work. It's quite useful on some projects. I
encouraged myself to ask you a question:
Think I've seen Syslinux booting fli4l on Systems without keyboard,
where "keyboard option" has been set to "not installed" in the Bios.
There are lot of boards around, e.g. with award bios like those 486 UMC

Question about calling C function from R
Hi,all
I wrote a C function and now I want to plug in this in R. I know how to do
this in Unix version R by typing something like "R CMD SHLIB foo.c" to
compile this C code. Then I can load it by using dyn.load. But I don't know
how to do it in a windows version R. Anyone can help me out here? I really
appreciate.
Thanks a lot!

Cox model qustion in R
Dear all,
I have a beginner's R question for coxph() and survfit().
I have a data set with survival time (no censoring) and treatment indicator(0/1). I did something like
fit<-coxph( Surv(t)~treat, method="breslow",data=data)
> fit
Call:
coxph(formula = Surv(t) ~ treat, data = data, method = "breslow")
coef exp(coef) se(coef) z p
