Update join_table attributes
I have two ActiveRecord classes that point at each other with a
"has_and_belongs_to_many" (habtm) relationship using a join table. The
join
table has an a few additional columns besides the _id columns.
For those of you with the Agile Web Dev w/ Rails book, it''s exactly the
same
setup as the articles<->articles_users<->users example on p240.

Include with two references of one model of the same table
Hey guys,
I just came across this oddity, not sure what to make of it yet, but
I think it might be incorrect behavior. When doing a @inst.find(:all,
:include => ["hometeam", "awayteam"] ...) hometeam and awayteam are two
references from a belongs_to that is of the same model and of the same
table. I will get a pgerror stating that "matches", which is

At the start of October, Duane Johnson announced the Query mixin plugin on

I''ve not been able to locate the attached code. Goggle has not helped me
this time. Could somebody forward it to me?
Thanks in advance

NULL id''s / invalid references

could you suggest me how to handle this in a proper way? I have a table
which has

sometimes there is a NULL value and table.othertable.foo returns an
error... what should I do about it? change something in model? in view?
or just add "unknown" row to othertable and update table.othertable_id

Beauty in Page Layout

I have a model with many associations (20+). I would like to display the
relative associations using AJAX, allowing the user to display the
association his/her is interesting at a particular time. Is there any
existing applications or sample code that I can look at to accomplish the
task?
Present I have one long page, with master (displaying current record

Rails on Sun
Hi Everbody,
I''ve got a potential idea for introducing Rails to my company. My only
shot at this is to minimize what our Ops guys would have to install and
configure to get this up and running.
Right now, our servers are Solaris boxes and we are using Sun ONE as our
web server.
Anyone got Rails running in this environment?
Also, has anyone got Rails talking to Oracle databases?

NoobyQ: how to work with a table of static lookup data??
Hello out there!
Nooby question: What''s the "Rails" way to work with tables of relatively
static lookup data?
Objectively (I''m thinking); I don''t want to hit the DB each time, so for
each lookup table, initialize a globally available hash with lable/value
pairs...
Am I on the right track?
How would you do this kind of thing in Rails?
Thanks!

Avery Lables, PDF::Writer or LaTex?
In a new app we are developing, we need to be able to dynamically create
a PDF and send it to the browser (inline with send_data). I have been
tinkering with PDF::Writer and love the simplicity and native ruby-ness
of it all.
However, one of the main uses for this functionality is to output a PDF
of addresses to be printed on Avery 5161 labels. LaTex seems to be
suited well for this, but it

staying with R, jobs in R
Hi:
I started using R and am an avid fan of the product and also the concept. I
am considering switching jobs but do wish to continute with R while the
industry standard seems to be SAS. Is there any web site which posts jobs at
places which use R for their work.

merge data frames taking mean/mode of multiple macthes
Hello :)
I have two data frames, one has properties taken on a
piece by piece basis and the other has performance on
a lot by lot basis. I wish to combine these two data
frames but the problem is that each lot has multiple
pieces and hence i need to take a mean of the
properties of multiple pieces and match it to the row
having data about the lot.
I was wondering if there is a simple commmand,
