recipes/categories to books/authors but listing doesn''t work
People,
I have gone through the cookbook example:
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails.html?page=1
and everything worked fine an a FC4/Postgres setup.
I then tried to reproduce this success with something that would be
useful to me - a library db using books & authors tables. The author
list works but NOT the book list (unless I take line #17 out).
I get this message:

Nil column results, possible to ignore?
For a table "clients" there are city, state, and zip fields. However, for some clients we only have a state with no actual address.
The following code throws a "You have a nil object" error when outputting my client list. Is there a way around this, short of writing a specific case for each possibility?
<%= client.city + '', '' + client.state +

Newby: Getting "unitialized constant SockServ" -- help
I can''t seem to find my error. I think it''s fairly basic. Do I have to
initialize SockServ somewhere or is this error message really indicating
something else?

multiple items on 1 column
Hello,
I am trying to put multiple items in one column and can''t seem to get
the syntax right.
These are images and the image url''s are being pulled from a database.
It seems that <tr></tr> is the trigger to go onto the next item.
Here is the code from the controller:
def list
@items = Item.find_all
end
Here is the code from list.rhtml file:

rake test_units not loading any fixtures
Hello All,
If I run my unit tests individually using Ruby, they all work correctly.
However, if I try to run them using "rake test_units", I get a bunch of
error messages.
The error messages appear to be caused by rake not loading any of the
fixtures into the test database.
I am using PostgreSQL on Windows.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Bruce.

J2EE equivalent
Gang-
1. Is there anything in Ruby that handles the .properites files similar
to the J2EE application servers. Or do I need to define all of the
properties as constants?
2. Is there anyway I can load some of my classes (such as singletons)
during the startup? I am looking for the startup classes that J2EE
containers provide.
Thanks

post.author_id or post.author ? Rails bug?
Hi all!
I have just found something very strange.
Let''s imagine that I have posts that belong to an author.
If I do the following (the order doesn''t matter):
apost.author = Author.find(3)
apost.author_id = 2
I get a post that has both an :author_id => 2 attribute, and an
associated Author with id 3.
Then, post.save, and the author_id in the DB is 3.
I think that this

categories/recipes & books/descriptions - has_many vs has_one => id question
People,
In the cookbook eg, categories has_many recipes but in a book eg, book
has_one description - doesn''t that mean that the id of the description
should be the same as the id of the book (instead of having it''s own
"description_id" in the book table?
Thanks,
Phil.

Scaffolding - disabling Create, Edit, Destroy for some user logins?
People,
I am using:
before_filter :login_required
in my Controllers and this works fine. For some tables I am happy to
use the output of eg:
ruby script/generate scaffold Author
but is there some way that I can disable Create, Edit, Destroy for some
user logins in the corresponding view?
Thanks,
Phil.

Merging data frames on a variety of columns
Hello,
This is a semi-complicated question about comparing two datasets,
probably using merge, but I am open to other ideas. I have a large
frame of information about companies.? It's over 30,000 rows and looks
something like...
df1 <-
identifier1???? identifier2 name other_name year

belongs_to not saving foreign key
Under Rails 2.3.2 using a completely brand new project, I have 2
models:
class Author < ActiveRecord::Base
# name:string
end
class Book < ActiveRecord::Base
# title:string
belongs_to :author # author_id
end
And a simple test where i create a Book with an Author using the
belongs_to and then update the foreign key directly:
require ''test_helper''
class BookTest

Dead horse: validates_associated
Regarding validates_associated...
Let''s say I have:
article belongs_to author
But for whatever reason, I want an article to also be written
anonymously and therefore not require an author. Then I have:
Article:
belongs_to :author
validates_associated :author
But I DON''T have validates_presence_of. What I want to do is validate
that an author is valid --if it is
