Multiple series plot with different 'type' argument
Hi:
I need to plot two time series in the same plot and
they cover the same time range and have the same
frequency. With
RSiteSearch("multiple series plot")
i found this post by Gabor Grothendieck:

Exactly what i need except for one detail. I want one series
to be made of points and the other by a line. When I simply

Hi,
I have to work under Windows, it's a company policy.
I've just found that there is a conflict between tools used to build R packages (Rtools) and ADMB due to the need to put Rtools compiler's

Making a map in R?
Does anyone know of a package to make a map from GIS data, and/or would it
be easier in one of the free GIS programs. I would like to make a map of
the savannah river area with our sampling locations.
thanks

R helps win competitions
DeaR ComRades,
This is a quote from a News article in Science's 11-February issue, about competitions to model data:
"For Chris Raimondi, a search-engine expert based in Baltimore, Maryland, and winner of the HIV-treatment competition, the Kaggle contest motivated him to hone his skills in a newly learned computer language called R, which he used to encode the winning data model.

How do I compare 47 GLM models with 1 to 5 interactions and unique combinations?
Hi R-listers,
I have developed 47 GLM models with different combinations of interactions
from 1 variable to 5 variables. I have manually made each model separately
and put them into individual tables (organized by the number of variables)
showing the AIC score. I want to compare all of these models.
1) What is the best way to compare various models with unique combinations
and different number

Fast Two-Dimensional Optimization
Dear R Helpers,
I have attempted "optim" function to solve a two-dimensional optimization
problem. It took around 25 second to complete the procedure.
However, I want to reduce the computation time: less than 7 second. Is there
any optimization function in R which is very rapid?
Best Regards,

What does "rbind(iris[,,1], iris[,,2], iris[,,3])" do?
It's in the Venables & Ripley MASS (ed 3) book in the section on
principal components.
The context is as follows
> ir <- rbind(iris[,,1], iris[,,2], iris[,,3])
> ir.species <- factor(c(rep("s",50),rep("c",50),rep("v",50)))
(then they use brush(ir) which I guess is not an R function)
and then
> princomp(log(ir[1:4]),cor=T)
(there is no [1:4]

Using lme() for split plot
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to use lme() for analyzing a split-plot
experiment. I've been looking at the examples from the 'R Book',
those are nested but with only one factor at the whole-plot level, my
test is 2^2 at the whole-plot level, with a single many level factor
at the sub-plot level. My question is about properly specifying the
random effects part of the model,

Easy way to `iris[,-"Petal.Length"]' subsetting?
Dear all
What is the easy way to drop a variable by using its name (and not its
number)? Example:
> data(iris)
> head(iris)
Sepal.Length Sepal.Width Petal.Length Petal.Width Species
1 5.1 3.5 1.4 0.2 setosa
2 4.9 3.0 1.4 0.2 setosa
3 4.7 3.2 1.3 0.2 setosa
4 4.6 3.1

... lengthy output follows which seems correct ...
but not for loading:

How to find statistics like that.
Hi there,
Suppose mu is constant, and error is normally distributed with mean 0 and
fixed variance s. I need to find a statistics that:
Y_i = mu + beta1* I1_i beta2*I2_i + beta3*I1_i*I2_i + +error, where I_i is
1 Y_i is from group A, and 0 if Y_i is from group B.
It is large when beta1=beta2=0
It is small when beta1 and/or beta2 is not equal to 0
How can I find it by R? Thank you very much

Help: Mahalanobis distances between 'Species' from iris
Dear R list,
I'm trying to calculate Mahalanobis distances for 'Species' of 'iris' data
as obtained below:

Versicolor 89.86419 0 17.20107
Virginica 179.38471 17.20107 0

I am refering to a function call like this:

I tried to see the content of it by typing:

but it gives nothing. How can I see it's content ?

save(iris,file="clipboard",ascii=TRUE)
Is this a bug? I thought that "clipboard" could always be substituted
for a filename when dealing with ASCII files.

Error in file(file, "wb") : `mode' for the clipboard must be `r' or `w'

symbolic math
Hi all!
Does anyone knows if it exists a "symbolic math" package in R, that allows to compute derivatives, integrals, etc.?
Does exist a freeware version of Maple?
Cheers,

R and UBUNTU startup
I did the same transition, facing the same issues, so I settled for installation of RKWard. This pretty much reproduces my previous experience with Tinn-R and the Rgui.
