DB trigger vs before_create
Hello everyone,
I''m having trouble figuring out which approach is better.
I have the following tables: products, orders and line_items.
Every time an Order is placed, the quantity field in the products
table has to be updated for each LineItem in the Order. One option is
to use DB triggers which is not as portable as using before_create in
the Order model. But with before_create I cannot

I want to have a form to change a users password. I can''t figure out

My Form:

Change to set_fixture_class
So, I sat down to use set_fixture_class, and it bombed on the first
thing I tried:
set_fixture_class :content_drafts => "Article::Draft"
I made a quick patch, and I''d appreciate a quick run through your
tests to make sure it doesn''t disturb anything:

As I was typing this, I realized that the string gives us no benefits.

SQLite3 + RAM drive => 3 times faster unit tests
One problem I sort of always had with the ActiveRecord''s tight coupling
to the SQL backend is how slow it makes the unit tests. OK, there are
some ways to make it faster at a price of extra complexity (reusing the
fixtures, doing a rollback in the end of the test, etc), but still - it
is much slower than what I would like a unit test to be.
Today I had a very simple idea (why, oh why

- a journal belongs to a log and can have many attachments
- an attachment belongs to a journal

nonstandard postgresql sequence names
I''m working with a legacy postgresql database where the names of tables,
columns, etc., do not usually follow Rails conventions.
I''ve been able to work around it for the most part, but I ran into this:
I have the following test:
require File.dirname(__FILE__) + ''/../test_helper''
class SponsorTest < Test::Unit::TestCase

Change redirect after method ''redirect_to''
I want to be able to change the redirection url after I called
redirect_to, is that possible?
My specific use case is that I want to change the default redirection of
"Login Engine" method signup, but I am seeing no other way then
copy/past and change the parameters of redirect_to.
This questions extends to render method as well, I want is to avoid
DoubleRenderError exception.

Can we cache user home pages?
Hi Railers,
I am trying to create a simple application like a guest book which has users
and uses sessions to keep track of
which users are logged on. The user''s page is constructed after doing some
SQL queries and the user clicks on another link and hits the back button I
dont want to regenerate the whole page (which is what happens now) .So I
want to use some kind of caching mechanism.

Plugin w/ Migrations and/or Fixtures?
I''m working on a plugin which needs to add both schema and data to the app
database, and I''m trying to figure out the best way to do it. I''d like to use a
db migration to modify the schema and load the data from a YAML fixture, but
Rails doesn''t seem to support migrations for plugins. To do so, the schema_info
table would need to change to include a

Save only inserts null instead of actual values
Hi,
whenever I try to save my form, rails only enters null values in my
database. I''m using sqlite, I thought that sqlite might be the problem,
but the problem remains when I switched to mysql. Here is my code:
controller:
class CollectionController < ApplicationController

@collection = Collection.new
end
def create

How to redisplay submitted data on validation error?
Hi!
If i have an object it''s easy.
But i''m making a simple contact form and i check if email address is
correct. If it''s not i redisplay the form with the info that there was
an error (should i use redirect_to or render :action? what''s the
difference?), but all previously submitted data is lost.
I tried creating variables using names of the form fields, but

I get an "undefined method ''tag''" when I try to use the

Does acts_as_attachment :storage => :db_system work?
I found the post about needing to install acts_as_attachement_1_1_6 if
you are not on edge rails. But I am having trouble getting db_system
storage to work. As far as I can tell in from the database, things are
working, but I don''t see how my model table hooks up with the db_files
table so I am having trouble altering the image_tag from the tutorial
