trouble positioning legends on barplot written to a file
I'm trying to generate some plots for print publication and I'm having trouble
getting them the way I want. I get a plot with a legend that overlaps the bars
and looks bad. Also, I'm saving this as PDF file (whatever happened to the
"png" function to save as PNG format, in r 1.4.1?)
I've tried a number of things, which produce a number of questions.
1) it seems that the

font size relative to graphic
I am printing numbers onto horizontal bars in a bar plots, but I am
finding it difficult to make the number always the right size. If there
are more bars, the bars get narrower and the font is too big. I also find
that if I change the size of the graph, the bars will get wider or
narrower and the font stays about the same size. The result depends on
whether I view the graph in X11 or in

títulos inclinados
Estimados compañeros, estoy dando vueltas a cómo poner los nombres de
las provincias para que se sepa el valor que corresponde a cada una en
el siguiente código:
barplot(table(dg$prov), xlab="provincias", ylab="Frecuencia")
Recuerdo que hubo un mensaje en el foro sobre el parámetro srt=90 para
poner los títulos en vertical , pero no logro manejarlo.
Gracias,
Juan

bug/feature with barplot?
I have found a bug/feature with barplot that at least to me shows
undesireable behaviour. When using barplot and plotting fewer
groups/levels/factors(I am unsure what they are called) than the number
of colors stated in a col statement, the colors wrap around such that
the colors are not fixed to one group. This is mostly problematic when
I make R figures using scripts, since I sometimes have

How to get legend outside of plot?
I am creating a CDF plot function more user-friendly than any default r
function. Depending upon the bimodality of the data (it is often bimodal),
or any other strange data trends, the points can end up gathering in just
about any corner of the plot. So, when I add a legend, whether I choose to
add it in the bottom right, top left, or wherever, it will sometimes end up
putting the legend right

Legend that is big?
I can put a legend on a plot with something like:
legend('bottom', leg.txt, horiz = TRUE, fill = colors)
But what if the arrays leg.txt and colors are too big? I would still like to
provide a legend but to save space I would like to just show small boxes
with the color filled in so it will still fit on the plot. If I could adjust
the size of the boxes (at least in one dimension)

label option in 'barplot'?
Hello all,
When using the 'barplot' function, how would one go about creating
labels on the top of the bars corresponding to the actual frequency
values (i.e., the height of the bar). For histograms, one can use
the 'LABEL=T' parameter to this effect, but it is not available for
barplot. Must one manually create such labels for a barplot (perhaps
using mtext)?
Thanks.

legend() graphics output bug (PR#5725)
Full_Name: Daniel Gasser
Version: 1.8.1
OS: Win XP
Submission from: (NULL) (130.60.20.92)
The legend()-Function shows a different behaviour than it did in Version 1.6.1.
It plots a black box left of the legend lines on each legend row. In 1.6.1 there
was just the line in appropriate color for each row in the legend (i was using
exactly the same legend statement and same plot function).

How to center a horizontal legend with specified 'text.width'
Hello dear list,
I just cannot figure out how to do this and didn't find a solution for my specific problem.
I want to place a centered horizontal legend between 4 plots. That's no problem.
The problem is: As soon as I specify the "text.width" parameter to separate the two legend entries, the legend is not centered anymore. I thought the 'xjust' parameter would do what

Legend
Hi everyone.
I have a linear regression where I retrieve the R2 like this:
r2 = sprintf('%4.2f %s',(summary(reg1)$r.squared))
In my figure I have a legend where I would like to add that R2 value to the
legend text.
Something like: My text R^2 = r2
legend('topright', inset = .05, title='light ratios', pch = c(21),
c(paste('Green/Red', R^2, '=', r2)),

Multiple symbols per single line in a legend
Hello everybody,
Is it possible to coax legend() into displaying more than one simbol per
line in legend? I have a graph like the one attached to this mail; I would
like to reorganize the legend in such a way that the duplicate text would be
omitted, i.e., the first line would read <square> <triangledown> "increasing
frequency" and the second one would read <circle>

Dotchart showing mean and median by group
Given this example
mean.values<-colMeans(VADeaths)
mean.values<-apply(VADeaths, 2, mean)
median.values<-apply(VADeaths, 2, median)
dotchart(VADeaths, gdata=mean.values)
dotchart(VADeaths, gdata=median.values)
is it possible to ?combine? a single dotchart showing both the mean and the
median for each single group (with different plotting symbols)?
?is it that possible with the use of

Plotting a legend outside the figure - units
Dear R gurus,
I am trying to plot a legend in the margins of a figure. The basic idea is to have two (or more) plots on the same figure, but then to have a common legend at the bottom of the plot. The approach that I have taken is to setup the figures, then do a "dummy" plot of the legend to determine the height of the legend box (ie from the value returned by the legend() command). I

dotplot: character size of labels
Dear R users,
using dotplot (R1.2.0, WinNT4.0), I am trying to change the character size
of the labels of the points:
> # example
> data(VADeaths)
> dotplot(VADeaths, main = "Death Rates in Virginia - 1940")
> # I'd like to have smaller character size of the labels (for age and
population groups)
> ?dotplot

barplot: border color when stacked
Dear R-users,
I am using R version 2.10.1 under windows.
In a barplot, I want to mark one of the bars with a special border color.
For example:
barplot(c(3, 7, 11), border = c(NA, "red", NA))
But how to do this when the bars are stacked?
for example:
barplot(matrix(1:6, ncol=3)) # border of second bar (i.e. the one with total height = 7) should be red again, I try:
barplot(matrix(1:6,

Histograms rotated, side-by-side

I am wanting to create 8 side-by-side histograms which have been rotated 90
degrees clockwise from how they usually sit.. all with the same scales. Is
someone able to help me out?
Thanks so much,

barplot2
Hello,
I get a nice looking barplot using the barplot2 function in the gregmisc
package:
body2 <- barplot2(hh3, beside = TRUE,
col = c("mistyrose", "lightcyan"),
....
cex.names = 1.0, plot.ci = TRUE, ci.l = cil, ci.u = ciu,
plot.grid = TRUE)
box()
However, obviously I lose the collors when converting from ps to a pdf
