Variograms and large distances
Hello R list, I need to compute empirical variograms using data from a large geographic area (~10^6 km2). Although I could not find a specific reference, I assume that both geoR and gstat calculate distances among data points assuming points are on a flat surface (using the Pythagorean Theorem). Because the location of my data is large and located near the pole, assuming that latitude and

default value for cutoff in gstat variogram()
I wonder what is the default value for the argument 'cutoff' when not specified in the variogram.formula function of gstat. Computing variogram envelops within gstat, I am comparing the results obtained with variog in geoR and variogram in gstat, and it took me a while before understanding that the cutoff default value is not the maximum distance. Can Edzer tell us about it? All the

geoR/variog4() not returning all directions
Mac OS 10.3.5, R 2.0.0 latest version of geoR I have an incomplete 5 x 20 spatial array of samples (60 out of 100 possible locations) for which I would like to calculate directional variograms using variog4(). Unfortunately, I can't get it to return all 4 directions. It returns variograms for 45, 90, and 135 degrees, omitting 0 degrees (pi/4, pi/2, 3pi/4, omitting 0). If I specify 0

Are package maintainers responsible for name-mangling class names?
The following came up when Roger Bivand and I discussed R's name spaces and overlap in packages, in the bus to the field trip during StatGIS, last Tuesday: If two packages create the same class, say "variogram", and both are loaded, then using a method for an object of class "variogram" cannot discriminate between them and will call the method in the package loaded last.

Bug in optim - way to solve problem?
Hi, I want to automatically fit variograms to a large number of different sample data sets, and call the funtion "likfit" (in package geoR) from within a for-loop. "likfit" does again call "optim". After ssuccessfully fitting variograms to some of the data sets, the procedure crashes and I get the error message: Error in optim(par = ini, fn = negloglik.GRF,

Memory limitation in GeoR - Windows or R?
Dear Aaron, I am really a tool user and not a tool maker (actually an ecologist doing some biostatistics)... so, I take the liberty of sending a copy of this e-mail to the r-help list where capable computer persons and true statisticians may provide more relevant information and also to Paulo Ribeiro and Peter Diggle, the authors of geoR.. I really feel that your huge matrix cannot be

spatial statistics vs. spatial econometrics
Dear R users, I am putting together reading and resources lists for spatial statistics and spatial econometrics and am looking for some pointers from more experienced practitioners. In particular, I find two "camps" in spatial modelling, and am wondering which approach is better suitied to which situation. The first camp is along the lines of Venables and Ripley's Chapter 14

does smbmount use keepalive and/or smb.conf?
Greetings, I don't know how common an issue this is as I haven't found much in the list archives that was helpful to me, so I'm hoping for some pointers. FYI, we have samba 2.3.3a-6 running on the 2.4.18-10 kernel. There seems to be an issue with smbfs mounts at times where connectivity may be lost (e.g. Win share becomes unavailable) causing local processes such as lsof or ps,

RES: Samba 3.0.2a with ADS w2k3 Active Directory, enctype s
Hi Jim, I did what the doc says but the problem is the same. Does anybody saw this work ? I mean, is the Samba 3.0.2a+Kerberos MIT 1.3.3 able to be accessed by a WXP, W2K or W2K3 machine, using Kerberos tickets generated in a Windows 2003 KDC (W2K3 AD) ? Dear all, Please let me start by indicating that I am not from a technical background, so please be gentle and patient with me. I am trying to get a snapshot from my virtual machines (vm) and the following command works for all of them bar one: # virsh snapshot-create-as --quiesce --no-metadata --domain myvm myvm-state --diskspec vda,file=overlay.qcow2 --disk-only --atomic The only exception is

[R-sig-Geo] plot() and Jpeg() increase font size and resolution
Thanks to Edzer and Roger, I can now plot with increased font sizes. However, jpeg still does not reproduce these, nor does it show up in high quality. What I would like to do is produce some highresolution jpegs. Any help would be appreciated Thanx Herry R2.4 on Mandriva 10.2 linux. spatial stats - geoR - variogram - standard deviation
Hello, I am attempting to get the standard deviation in multiple distance bins in my spatial data. It appears as though the 'variog' command in the geoR package will do the trick, as one of the outputs from 'variog' is 'variog$sd', which, according to the manual, is the "standard deviation of the values in each bin". However, when I run this command, the

plot two variograms on a same graph
Hi, I would know how to plot two variograms on a same graph. I can plot one by one but I would draw both on the same one. Is it possible? Do i need any special package? Thanks! Cordialement Damien Landais

gstat 0.9-12: cokriging cross validation and class name incompatibilities
I uploaded gstat 0.9-12 to CRAN, which has a few important changes: 1. Cokriging cross validation Cokriging cross validation is now possible with the function gstat.cv: you simply pass a multivariable gstat object, and cross validation is done for the first variable in the object. Optionally, secondary variable records at locations coinciding with the validation locations are removed. 2. Class

variograms and kriging
Hello Trying to develop variograms and kriged surfaces from a point file. gstat---2 basic plot questions
Hi all-- I'm new to R, statistics and programming, so sorry if this is a really basic question! I have plotted a directional variogram, and I want to a. overlay the omni-directional line over each directional panel b. display the directional variograms in a single panel with a legend that associated each line to each degree measurement. The line I'm using is

spatial cross-correlation
Hi; I cannot find in the R html documentation a way to evaluate cross-correlation in 2D data sets. I would like to evaluate cross-correlation in a series of moving windows between two maps. i,e, specify several windows inside the complete 2D spatial matrixes and for each one ofthese windows evaluate the 2D cross-correlation (commonly conducted in the spectral domain). Thanks in advance and best

data format
Hi, How can I analyze the data collected in database formatting (with labels) rather than splitted by individual columns (almost in excel)? For example (comma separated data); Label,Value Good,10 Bad,12 Good,15 Good,18 Good,12 Bad,15 Bad,10 etc... ks.test or chisq.test can be done. Splitting the data into new columns is not applicable cos' I'll use R-integration in another software.
