from long/lat to UTM
Hi: Is there any function in R which can convert the long/lat to UTM(Universal Transverse Mercator)? There are quite a few converters on Internet. However, the interface is designed as input->output which I can not convert lots of locations at the same time. Another question is whether there is a function in R which can tell the time zone from the location's lat/long? Thank you!

polynomial expansion in R
Hi: I have two vectors of data, x and y and I want to get the "polynomial" expansion of (x+y)^p with any integer power p in R. Suppose p=2, then I want a matrix of five vectors, namely, x y x^2 y^2 x*y. The coefficient of the polynomial is not needed. I can write it manully if p is small. But I want it in the case of p=10 or even bigger, is there any function in R can do that

Concatening two maps/shapefiles...
Dear All, I'm new with mapping and using shapefiles in R. I use the version: R 3.2.1 GUI 1.66 with Snow Leopard Mac OS (6956) I want to build a map of the countries of Africa, in order to add points of collecting species of beetles, for later publishing. library(maptools) library(mapdata) When I put the extreme coordinates of Africa, the map began only at longitude 0? and thus lacks the

USA map with all states
Hi R Gurus! There was a function in S called "usa()" which would plot the US. I found map('usa') in R for the lower 48 states. Is there a way to include Alaska and Hawaii as well, please? Thanks, Edna Bell

question about the "solve" function in library "Matrix"
Hi: I have some problems when I use the function "solve" function in a loop. In the following code, I have a diagonal martix "ttt" whose elements change in every iteration in a loop. I defined a "dpoMatrix"class before the loop so I do not need to define this class every time in the loop. The reason is to save some computing time. The code is below. The inverse

how to important a date file into R
Hi: I have a data file in the following format. The first three digits stand for the ID of a respondent such as 402, 403. Different respondents may have the same ID. Followed the ID are 298 single digit number ranging from 1 to 5. My question is how to read this data file into R. I tried "scan" and "read" but they do not work because the numbers in the file are not

Using GIS data in R
I have a simple problem: I need to load a ERSI shapefile of US states and check whether or not a set of points are within the boundary of these states. I have the shapefile, I have the coordinates but I'm having a great deal of difficulty bringing the two together. The problem is the various GIS packages for R do not play well with each other. sp, shapefiles, maptools, etc all use different

memory in R
Hi: I am doing a MCMC algorithm which is well known to consume much computer memory. And I have a problem everytime I run my R program. It stopped at certain iteration and says "can not allocate a vector of 19 kb". It seems that the computer's memory has been exhausted. However, it is said that after each iteration the objects (such as a huge matrix) can be set to NULL. And the

time series regression
Hi: I have two time series y(t) and x(t). I want to regress Y on X. Because Y is a time series and may have autocorrelation such as AR(p), so it is not efficient to use OLS directly. The model I am trying to fit is like Y(t)=beta0+beta1*X(t)+rho*Y(t-1)+e(t) e(t) is iid normal random error. Anybody know whether there is a function in R can fit such models? The function can also let me specify

importing shapefiles into spatstat
Dear R users, I am using spatstat to analyze point patterns (tree locations). I would like to import the shapefile with the study area polygons (six total) into R and use it to create the window for the spatstat analysis. I do not simply want to use a rectangle because the study areas spread out over 40000 ha. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Charlotte Reemts Charlotte

political maps world maps in R, wrld_simpl
dear all, I'm a newbie in map tools. I was asking to perform an apparently very simple task. I have a list of countries (about fifty all over in the world) scored with a real positive value. Eg Country score Italy .56 UK .58 Korea .41 Mexico .63 ... I wish to plot geographical maps where every country is filled with a color depending on his score. Using maptools library and

dot density maps
Dear All, In the moment i'm using the map and maptools package to read shapefiles and display the maps. I'm looking for the possibility to draw points (randomly positioned or positioned according to a grid) into the polygons instead of filling the polygons with colors. For example: a map (shapefile) with 10 countries, 15 points in the polygon of country A, 20 points in the

Maps of Canada and some (very) simple instructions
I am a very new user of R (ver 2.2.1 & Windows XP) I would like to see if I can plot some simple data (Number of people in certain regions of Canada and within Ontario and Quebec. Can anyone suggest a) a souce of Canadian maps and b) some simple worked examples of using maps. At the moment I have managed to load the map and mapdata libraries but that is about the extend of my knowledge.

Maps, Eastern Europe
Dear all, I would like to employ a European map in a presentation. My idea was to use: library(mapdata) map("worldHires", c("Austria", "Switzerland", "Germany")) where I include all countries from my analysis as a vector of character strings like in the example above. Unfortunately, I was unable to specify the Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) or

Issues with unionSpatialPolygons on Ubuntu
Hi, I've cross posted with r-sig-debian since they may be an issue for linux (never had this problem on my windows machine...) I recently made the switch to Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid), and found that unionSpatialPolygons() gives me the following error when trying to combine polygons within a shapefile: # Read in shapefile and merge polygons foo <- readShapePoly("foo.shp",

Drawing maps in R?
What tools and documentation exist for producing maps and working with polygon and polylist objects in R beyond the following: * Packages maps, mapproj, maptools, and mapdata. * Becker and Wilks (1993, 1995), listed as references in the documentation on the "map" function. Thanks, Spencer Graves

[newbie] how to find and combine geographic maps with particular features?
SUMMARY: Specific problem: I'm regridding biomass-burning emissions from a global/unprojected inventory to a regional projection (LCC over North America). I need to have boundaries for Canada, Mexico, and US (including US states), but also Caribbean and Atlantic nations (notably the Bahamas). I would also like to add Canadian provinces and Mexican states. How to put these together? General
