Finding the right number of clusters
SAS has something called the "cubic criterion" cutoff for finding the
most appropriate number of clusters. Does R have anything that would
replicate that? I've been searching the lists and can't seem to find
anything that would point me in the right direction.
Thank in advance,

speeding up a recursive function
Hi All,
is there any general advice about speeding up recursive functions
(not mentioning 'don't use them')?

Modifying the parameters for a function
I have modified the parameters for a function (for my own use) in the
stats package, but I assume I need to update the parameter set in
another file as I'm getting the following error when I run R:
The compile works fine so I assume there is a configuration file in the
base package of R that needs modification.

proj4R library will not install
I'm hoping someone can help me. I have downloaded the proj4R.zip and under my version of R (2.3.1) I install the package from local zip file. This worked great. I then type library(proj4R) to load the library and I get the error: Error in library(proj4R) : 'proj4R' is not a valid package -- installed < 2.0.0? I have read through the install documentation and have downloaded and

compiling under windows
What is the best way to set up a project in visual studio, work on R and
re compile? Is it better to use a different compiler or programming
environment? I specifically want to work on C and Fortran extensions.

children of objects are not instantiated?
Hello,
I''m a Java developer and I''m looking at Rails as a very interesting thing.
I read the article
http://theserverside.com/articles/article.tss?l=RailsHibernate
and saw a couple of things that I didn''t like too much:
1) The N+1 problem
This has been discussed in the thread (or should I say "flame"?) "Java
people want to beat us". It seems

Interesting ActiveRecord vs Hibernate article
For those haven''t seen it yet, Patrick Peak has an interesting
article at the Server Side (www.theserverside.com)
discussing the differences between the Hibernate (www.hibernate.org) peristence
framework and ActiveRecord. The article can be found here: http://www.theserverside.com/articles/article.tss?l=RailsHibernate .

Statistical / data mining methods in R and not in SAS?
Hi, and sorry for asking such an unspecific question.
Does anybody know of statistical / data mining methods that are available in R
that are not in SAS ? With SAS I mean the SAS System Version 9.4 and SAS
Enterprise Miner. I don't expect a complete list, just two or three examples
or hints where and what to look for.
I found some older comparisons, and the R methods mentioned there

R does in memory analysis only?
I wonder if someone would confirm something I'm 99% sure of from the
docs and discussion on the list, but can't find stated explicitly:
R works only on problems that fit into (real or virtual) memory.
Thus, even if you have a problem (e.g., simple regression) that could be
solved by doing some operation on each row of a dataset at a time, you
can't solve it unless the entire dataset

Data Mining Survey
Dear R-Helpers,
SAS Institute just mailed out the notice below regarding a survey of
people who do data mining. To help keep the survey from becoming biased
toward commercial software, I thought it would be good to post it here
as well.
Cheers,

Help with Help
I have recently been reading several books on data mining which contain a
few data sets. The books offer some perspective on model choices, tuning
decisions, result interpretation. Are there any good resources that can walk me
through the thought process of an experienced data miner with the datasets that
are included for packages such as "rpart" & "kmeans".

multinom(): likelihood of model?
Hi all,
I'm working on a multinomial (or "polytomous") logistic regression
using R and have made great progress using multinom() from the nnet
library. My response variable has three categories, and there are two
different possible predictors. I'd like to use the likelihoods of
certain models (ie, saturated, fitteds, and null) to calculate
Nagelkerke R-squared values for

Creating a GUI based workflow
Hello R-users,
I am interested to know if there is a tool that allows us to build SAS
Enterprise Miner like workflows using the R scripts.
For example, let's say I have the R scripts/functions for the following
tasks:
1. Data Cleaning
2. Model Building
3. Model Validation
4. Visualization
I would like to drag these functions into a workflow and run them
together (output of one function

Comparing R and SAs
Hi:
For those of you who are adept at both SAS and R, I have the following questions:
a) What are some reasons / tasks for which you would use R over SAS and vice versa?
b) What are some things for which R is a must have that SAS cannot fulfill the requirements?
I am on the ramp up on both of them. The general feeling that I am getting by following this group is that R updates to the product are

Data mining tools
Hello there, apologies for cross-posting
my question is not an S/R question but there is so much knowledge
concentrated in those lists that I thought someone could point me in the
right direction.
A few months ago I read an article in a referenced journal comparing some
data mining programs, among which there was Insightful's I Miner, SAS'
Entreprise Miner, SPSS' Clementine (I think)
