Rails on straight CGI - doable?
I''m planning on dipping my toe into the rails ocean after having
lurked here for a bit. From what I gather, rails *WILL* work on a
straight CGI based server setup, it''s just slow, right?
Since this is going to be for my own enlightenment, I just need to
confirm(/deny) it''ll work at all right now; I''ll work on the "fast"
later.

split-plot design?
Dear R-gurus,
We are planning an experiment to test if plants produced by selfing are less
fit than those produced by outcrossing. We have plants from three different
alpine valleys, picked randomly among all the possible valleys. In each valley,
we have a number of individuals, also picked at random. seeds from this
individuals were brought back to the green house and sawned. when they

imap corrupted indexes
I've searched the archives and find a lot of references to corrupted indexes
but can't seem to find any solutions. It seems like folks either have the
problem or they don't.
We recently migrated from a RedHat Linux server to an OpenBSD 3.7 server (both
using dovecot). Imap was working flawlessly on the RedHat box but now gives
numerous index errors. I then upgraded to

ActiveRecord setting IDs on auto increment fields
Hi All, I''ve tried to do my searches, but can''t find reference to
this anywhere - My question is about ActiveRecord inserts and IDs. I
have a join table that both the models of the source tables join with
"has_and_belongs_to_many". It seems like ActiveRecord is setting the
"id" field for the join table- This should be an auto_increment and

Reshape
Hello, helpeRs,
I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to change a dataframe from long to
wide format using reshape (the original). I would appreciate it if
someone could demonstrate the correct syntax. The script below will
create a toy example. The new wide data should have a column name
for each unique entry in the "fame" column. Under each column
should be either the

SGI XFS 1.0.2a, ACLs and samba 2.2.3a with win2k perms
Hi,
I haven't been able to find any doco that explicity states whether it is
supported, so I am hoping someone out there can answer the following
questions:
Is it possible for a folder/file in a samba share to have win2k security
permissions assigned to it? For example, I want my samba server to
participate in an existing Win2k domain. I want users to be able to set
their own

Understanding nonlinear optimization and Rosenbrock's banana valley function?
GENERAL REFERENCE ON NONLINEAR OPTIMIZATION?
What are your favorite references on nonlinear optimization? I like
Bates and Watts (1988) Nonlinear Regression Analysis and Its
Applications (Wiley), especially for its key insights regarding
parameter effects vs. intrinsic curvature. Before I spent time and
money on several of the refences cited on the help pages for "optim",

Smooth line in graph
Hi,
I?m trying to get smooth curves connecting points in a plot using
"spline" but I don?t get what I whant.
Eg.:
x<-1:5
y <- c(0.31, 0.45, 0.84, 0.43, 0.25)
plot(x,y)
lines(spline(x,y))
Creates a valley between the first and second points, then peaks at 3rd,
and another valley between 4th and 5th. I?m trying to get a consistently
growing curve up to the 3rth point and then a

Windows license required?
Hi guys,
I was just over at the Zorin OS download pate at http://zorin-os.webs.com/download.htm. At the bottom of the page there is a small paragraph of disclaimers, including this:
> You must also have a valid Microsoft Windows license to utilize the WINE Windows software runtime environment.
If this is so, it's the first I've heard of it, and I've been running Wine for

OpenSSH_4.3p2 on AIX ssh-agent does not work
After installing this OpenSSH build on our AIX v5.2 systems, some users
started complaining that their logins failed.
We are using the binary build "OpenSSH 4.3p2-r2 for AIX 5.2" posted on
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openssh-aix/
Digging deeper, we find that these failing users have their clients
configured to use ssh-agent.
this appears in the syslog at the time of their attempted

For those who don?t know why you?d pay $1000 for a diskless 4-bay NAS box when there are $300-500 boxes that are superficially similar from QNAP, Synology,

File format information for .spx
I've checked to web for the format of the .spx file, and have not found anything complete. I've attached what I have deciphered so far. There are a few question marks in my tables that I want to understand better. I've also attached the .spx file that I used in the example values.
I'm trying to take Speex-encoded data from an embedded microprocessor and put it into the .spx
