Take Rails Studio Workshop?
In two weeks, Dave Thomas will be in Pasadena doing a three-day Rails
workshop. I''m about to sign up for it. I figure three intense days
with Dave and a few dozen other Rails developers will produce huge
learning leaps for me.
Then it occurred to me that it might be useful to ask the list if
anyone has attended one of these workshops before and, if so, how
valuable you found

Persistent session cookies?
It seems Rails sessions by default only last, well, a browsing session.
If the Rails app keeps track of logged-in state by sessions, that state
doesn''t survive restarting the browser.
How best to change this behaviour, to make the session cookie live
forever, or at least beyond browser restarts?
It was suggested to me on IRC to combine sessions with code to generate
a unique id and

Book Gap(s)?
As a long-time author of computer books, fairly experienced MVC/OO
thinker/coder, and recent Rails convert, it is probably not
surprising that my midnight ruminations occasionally lead me to
wonder if a Rails book might not be an interesting undertaking. But I
know there are some great titles out there already and undoubtedly
dozens more in the works.
I''m interested in writing

Inheritance Question
Hi,
My application has a table of People that has information about
them, and I want to have a subset of those people as Users - people
that can login to the application.
What is the best way to do this? Add columns to People that only
Users would use? I''ve read the threads on single table inheritance,
but it seemed a little bit wasteful: 10,000 people vs 50 users
For those more

Code Shopping in Rails
Back in the horse-and-buggy days when I was cutting my OO eye teeth
on Smalltalk, we had a LOT of conversations about the biggest problem
dealing with a large and growing set of classes and methods in the
Smalltalk image. It became clear that most, if not all, successful
Smalltalk coders spent a lot of their time code-shopping, i.e.,
looking for a class or method that did something they

formatting numbers with commas
I needed to format numbers with commas to make it more human
readable. Here''s how I did it.
def commify(number)
c = { :value => "", :length => 0 }
r = number.to_s.reverse.split("").inject(c) do |t, e|
iv, il = t[:value], t[:length]
iv += '','' if il % 3 == 0 && il != 0
{ :value => iv + e, :length =>

Trying to do a simple thing ...
Hi !
I was talking to a seasider and he asked me if it was easy to do the following
thing using rails :
1) ask a number to the user
2) ask a second number
3) give the addition of the two number and a link to be able to replay
All these things have to be done in one controller and one action, there is no
need for verification and other stuff.
I tried but I''ve got some problems

first ajax demo in Rails book - does it work for anyone?
Just tried the first AJAX example in the rails book (p.391-392, the
''word guessing'' thing), and the AJAX partial used seems to render as a
full page.
I''m not sure whether it''s
a) a partial bug
b) some interaction between ajax and partials
c) a change since the book came out
or
d) pilot error
I''ve checked the errata pages and it''s flagged up

Agile Rails book: depot problem
I recently finished the first part of the "Agile Rails" book. But, the
depot doesn''t completely work as it should. I still have 2 problems:
I will explain them in 2 threads.
The first one is:
I can''t destroy products (I can only creat and update them). When I try
to delete a product --> http://localhost:3001/admin/destroy/3
I get this error message:

Best options for full customer control of content?
Hi Railers,
I have a scenario to figure out that I''ve never yet come to a good answer for,
and I''m hoping some of you can shed some light.
The owner of website I built a while back (in PHP) would like to extend the
capabilities of the website to be fully CMS driven, with multiple language
versions (French, Spanish etc.) available in future. At the moment, a few
parts of

Saving one-many associations (elegant solution please)
What is the most elegant way to save new one-many associations?
order = Order.new(:name => "My Order")
order.line_items << LineItem.new(:product_id => 1, :quantity => 2)
order.line_items << LineItem.new(:product_id => 2, :quantity => 5)
order.save
The above - which is by far the most elegant way of putting it - doesn''t
work for me - the line_items

Migrations problem with Agile Rails book
I am following the instructions on Agile Web Development with Rails book "Iteratio E1: Capturing
an Order" section. When I run the migrations I get the following error.
rake db:migrate
(in /Users/balaparanj/work/depot)
-- execute("alter table line_items \n
add constraint fk_line_item_products \n
foreign key (product_id) references products(id)")

Help with the Agile Depot application tutorial
anyone can explain me why in the Agile Depot Tutorial application they
use i.product_id
to find if a product already exist in the cart, because the cart
contains items, each of them references a product.
I tried i.product_id like in the tutorial
and
i.product.i
all of these 2 notation works , but i find the second seems more
clean??? isn''t it.
Any explanation will be fine

Agile tutorial
Thank you for the comments on conditional replacements. I now have
another oddity to deal with.
When adding products to the session cart I am not able to have the
count incremented if the product has already been selected, rather
another item is added to the cart. I copied the code from the book
as carefully as I could and could find no error but to be sure I
then cut and pasted the code

MVC design good/bad
I am curious what you find is good and bad MVC design.
Let''s use the find and find_by_sql methods as examples.
Currently I have these spread out all over the place...
View: here I have some find methods when I am for example populating a
select list with choices in a form.
Controller: here I have the simpler find methods.
Model: here I have the more complicated find methods (usually

Logging in Rails
This is a newbie question, I have a class which is not derived from
ActionController or ActiveRecord but I want to use logging, I tried require
but still logging does not work -
This class is located in a file in "model" directory.

update or alter cart
I want to modify and update the items in the Depot - "display_cart".
Since the cart is in a session, its a little hard to get at the data.
I just want to create a way to change quantities, prices and
recalculate.
Has someone done this, and could you point me to the right direction.
Thanks

Extending Depot Example
Hi
I am new to the whole Rails/Ruby world as having come from a MS .NET
background, but I have followed the Depot example in the Agile Web Dev.
with Rails book with relative ease. However as an exercise to see how
much I had understood, I thought I would attempt to modify the example a
bit and add a Quantity field to the store index so as to pass that value
into the cart. I have extended the
