Xserve, USB, NUT
Hi - I have NUT running very nicely on a serial port on one of my OpenBSD
servers, and using hidups on a RHEL4 box. Now I'd like to run it on two
Macs, a PowerMac and an XServe G4. What is the USB port I need to
configure, and do I need the newhidups driver?
Thanks in advance for the help!

nut on Mac OS X. Where to put upsdrvctl shutdown?
I've installed nut on a Mac OS X machine (XServe running Mac OS X
10.3.9). It all seems to work fine except.....
I can't figure out where to put the upsdrvctl shutdown command in
order to get the ups to cut power after the computer shuts down.
There doesn't seem to be any sort of script that gets run at shutdown
time.
Has anyone successful done this under Mac OS X? Can you

rate limiting sshd connections ?
Does anyone know of a way to rate limit ssh connections from an IP address
? We are starting to see more and more brute force attempts to guess
simple passwords "/usr/sbin/inetd -wWl -C 10" is nice for slowing down
attempts to services launched via inetd. Is there an equiv method for
doing this to sshd? Running from inetd has some issues supposedly.

visualizing frequencies
Dear everybody,
In our game-theory lesson we have run several classroom-experiments where the
students had to decide for a natural number between one and seven. I have
troubles now to visualize the results: be a the vector of answers.
hist(a) will not assume natural numbers as answers, but rational. It will make
the brakes exactly at the natural numbers, which is difficult to interpret,

[OT] linux on a PPC (mac mini)
Hello there,
complete off-topic, sorry about this, but my former idea was to install
a CentOS on an old mac mini (PPC!). Disappointed to see that PowerPC is
not a supported architecture and that non ARM or Intel architecture are
not managed by recent distros.. :-(.
Searching the web, I see very few possibilities to install a recent (I
need gnome2) GNU/Linux distro on such hardware. I gave Linux

Filename problem (filenames containing slashes aka.\and /)
We _cannot_ go about renaming files, for a number of reasons.. the primary being some of the files are technically not ours to alter without a clients permission (names and all) and you don't understand just how many files there are. There are quite probably thousands of files, spread across _hundreds_ of cds and dvds which comes to a total of roughly 400GB.
As to a Mac server, i'm not

R kicking us out
Dear R People:
I am using R for teaching purposes in a large classroom.
Each computer has its own copy of R.
However, every once in a while, about half of us will get
thrown out of R, for no apparent reason.
By the way, it has happened in other classrooms as well.
Has anyone else run into this, please?
If so, how have you solved this problem, please?
Thanks in advance!

Data source for American college football rankings?
An interesting, and topical, example of multivariate data for
classroom illustrations are the American college football rankings.
Starting at the end of October (or "week 8", the 8th week of the
football season) a set of rankings called the BCS (Bowl Championship
Series) will be published. This is a composite ranking based on two
subjective polls, the Harris and USA Today polls, and a

Newbie question: ZFS on Xserve RAID with Solaris 10
--Apologies if you get two copies of this message - it was submitted
for moderation and hasn''t appeared on the list in two days, so I''m
resubmitting.
Hi all,
Just a quick question. Is it possible to utilise an Apple Xserve RAID
as an array for use with ZFS with RAID-Z in Solaris?
I''ve seen various mentions of ''zfs'' and ''xserve

Xen virtual interface settings
I''ve been mucking with xen for quite a while but recently started focusing
on custom network setups. I''d like to be able to create VMs on the fly from
a base image and set network settings in each without booting the image up.
This strange setup is for a classroom environment. At the beginning of the
quarter the instructor would run a script that creates all the

Ruby IO on brand new xserve with Leopard Server
Hi
I''m using princexml pdf generation in one of our apps and bump into
this very weird problem. On our ubuntu box and local machines
(MacBook Pro) pdfs are generated flawlessly. On the production xserve
(running the rails app in production mode on a mongrel cluster), a
2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, strange things start happening. The
following sections give back nil values in

Asterisk/Zaptel on Mac G5 or Xserve
I am considering a G5/XServe for a conferencing system. I need to put a TDM
card in the machine for timing. Is anyone out there using Asterisk on Mac
with zaptel drivers? I am looking at using Linux for the OS. If so what is
your experience?
Have a great day!

Hi All,
I''m super a super ruby nuby, so bare with me. I am working on a small
app that has a particular form that I am having a rough time figuring
out the best to way to handle.
Basically here it is, each school has one or more classrooms, and each
classroom can have one or more teachers.
Here''s what I am trying to do (edit a school):

education task view
Dear R-Devel,
I have had it in my mind for some time now that a Task View related to
R and education might be a good thing.
There are currently 19 Task Views, covering a broad spectrum of
general topics for which R may be used. The homepage lists 64 books
related to R, and several of them have accompanying packages on CRAN.
There is a wiki and a host of contributed documentation. We also have

XCP GUI management
Xen List
After planning for a year to move my Xen 3.4 classrooms to XCP I''m now
making an effort. With the old system I wrote many lines of bash scripts
around the xm command to group and manage my VMs. I used sudo to grant
privileges for each student to start, stop, console into, reboot, and wipe
their VMs without any interaction from me. Now with XCP I had the hope of

Centos 6.4 on Xserve, IPMI error
Hello!
I'm trying to install Centos 6.4 64 bit on this Xserve:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/xserve/specs/xserve-intel-xeon-2.8-eight-core-specs.html
I got a bootloader from:

as none of the official Centos releases (full, minimal, network 64 bit) boot on this machine.
They all crash when loading

are there reference lists/cheat sheets for categorized commands?
prepping to teach a 5-day CompTIA linux+ course next week with
CompTIA-supplied courseware and, given that it was my choice, i chose
to set up the classroom with centos 7.4 on all the student systems
since i assume most students are there to learn sysadmin and that's
the most likely platform they'll have when they get back to work.
also, most students are taking this course to prep for the
