Please use colMeans()! was: Re: Calculate Mean of Column Vectors?
There are indeed speed advantages in using colSums etc. However the disadvantage is that the newbie doesn't always find the power inherent in the apply, sapply, tapply and mapply. For many things that I do, the speed is the least of my worries; although I take the point that using apply for means or sums in packages that are distibuted to others is not the way to go.

how to calculate average of each column
Hey All,
I have a large dataset and I want to calculate the average of each column
then return a new dataset.
Here is my question: I dont know if there is a function that can allow me
to calculate the average every 60 records of data in the whole dataset, and
return a new data frame. Not sure if I have to divide the dataset first for
every 60, then do the mean or can i directly do that.
thanks

Booth volunteers needed for Grace Hopper Conference
Hello LLVM Developers!
Last year, the LLVM Foundation sponsored a booth at the Grace Hopper Conference. I had 2 amazing volunteers from the community, David Blaikie and Anna Zaks, help me spread the word about LLVM, compilers, and open source. It was a great experience and we are hoping to repeat this at the upcoming 2018 Grace Hopper conference in Houston, TX on September 26-28.

Samba & Win2k AD domain membership
Hello,
I am trying to setup my samba server version 3.0.10-1.fc3 as a Win2k Domain
Member. What I need to know is once I have ADS security and Kerberos
working, do I still need to use winbind or ldap for client authentication or
will Kerberos take care of it?

Damm Small Solaris
Hi,
for what it''s worth:
There''s now a new Live CD for Solaris called Damm Small Solaris:
http://www.sunhelp.ru/archives/179-Damn_Small_Solaris_0.1.1_English_Page.html
In contrast to Belenix this Live CD works in Qemu - even without kqemu
load the performance is not so bad. One important missing are the
network driver for the network adapter emulated by Qemu. But they

Calculate Mean from List
Dear all,
I have a list of correlation coefficient matrixes. Each matrix represents one date.
For example

net ads join fails
I am trying to connect to an ADS domain and it is failing all the time.
I am running SuSE Linux 9.0 with Samba 3.0.13 and have configured Samba with ldap and heimdal kerberos
Attached is my debug level 10 error log created when the join is attempted.
I would appreciate any advice on solving this problem.
Thanks in advance

howto calculate column means in data frame
Long story short, I have a big iterative procedure that produces a long list of data.frames such as the one called
"results" here. Is there an easy way to produce a similar list of data.frames comprised of the mean of each of the
columns in results, such that it ends up like the one I've shown in "resultsmean" below?
I've tried apply and lapply, still not got the

95% confidence interval of the coefficients from a bootstrap analysis
Hello,
I am doing a simple linear regression analysis that includes few variables.
I am using a bootstrap analysis to obtain the variation of my variables to
replacement.
I am trying to obtain the coefficients 95% confidence interval from the
bootstrap procedure.
Here is my script for the bootstrap:
N = length (data_Pb[,1])
B = 10000
stor.r2 = rep(0,B)
stor.r2 = rep(0,B)
stor.inter =

Histogram Bar Spacing or Border Width
Is there any way to control the spacing between bars in a histogram, or
change the border width (I'm assuming the hist() function, though
alternatives are welcome)? I'm interested in changing the visual spacing
between columns in a plotted histogram.
The general effect I'm looking for can be accomplished in barplots using
the "width=" parameter, but I have not been able

How to remove read access to / and my $HOME
Hi,
New wine user here. Installed Wine with IES4Linux and was totally amazed
at how well it worked and how simple it was! Excellent!
The problem I have is I want to restrict IE6 from being able to access my
entire Linux file system and just allow it to access (for instance)
~/.wine/drive_c.
I haven't found out how to do that yet. Is it possible?
More detail: In IE6 under Wine,

Beginner Bugs - Need help tagging
Anna Zaks, David Blaikie and I have been at Grace Hopper Conference for the last couple days talking to many people about LLVM and how to get involved in the project. Its been discussed many times before at LLVM Developer Meetings and recently on the mailing list about tagging bugs with the “beginner” keyword and that keyword was recently added to the LLVM Bugzilla. However, there are very few

Error in colMeans ... what's wrong with my data?
Having searched and searched I still haven't found what's the problem with my data (I've attached the relevant file).
Every time I tried to use the CANCOR-Function I got error messages.
So I turned to check my two sets of variables separately by using the "colMeans"-Function. With one set no problem .. but with the other.

colMeans in a data.frame with numeric and character data
Hi all,
I would like to know if it is posible by, someway, to get colMeans from
a data.frame with numeric as well as character data, dispersed all over
the object. Note that I would like to get colMeans neglecting character
data.
I am really in need of some function proceeding in that way…
All the best
