symbolic iteration
Dear all, I have 122 vectors named from L1 to L122. Now I hope to take log to each of the series, say L1 <- log(L1) ... L122<-log(L122) Can anyone show me a iterative way to make the job simple. I mean the way something like for(i in 1:122){ ... } or other similar methods. Many thanks. Jin

Fortran dy lib on Solaris
Dear all, Am new on this list but need help: I have a fortran code which I compile into a dynamic library (on Solaris). My probem is that when I call this code soon after starting R, it runs ok. But it doesn't for the second time without exiting R first. In this code I have to generate some random numbers. The problem is not about setting the seed. Anyone with an idea what might be going

R-2.0.1 Gentoo g77 problem
Hello, I use Gentoo and I can't get R 2.0.1 to compile. I used the portage system, Gentoo's source package sytem, and after it uncompresses the source to R, it says that I don't have a fortran compiler. It told me to use f77 flag and re-emerge gcc, which I did with the f77 and fortran flags, but it still won't compile. Does anyone have any ideas? I suspect that gcc has changed

Usage of apply
Dear R Users, Are there any documents on the usage of apply, tapply, sapply so that I avoid explicit loops. I found that these three functions were quite hard to be understood. Thank you in advance. -- Jin

ess settings
Dear R users, I downloaded an ess-5.2.2 package and hope to use emacs as front to work with R. I modified ~/.emacs and start R by M-x R. But I found when I quited the R session, it still asked me to save the work space or not. I added inferior-R-args with "--save" args. But it seemed that it had no effect. Can you tell me how to pass the arguments other than --no-readline to

compile R-1.9.1 with Portland fortran
Dear R-users, Has any one compiled R-1.9.1 successfully with Portland pgcc pgCC and pgf77? I can not configurate it with ./configure since it told me checking for Fortran name-mangling scheme... configure: error: cannot compile a simple Fortran program Can any one give me some advice. Thank you. My platform: Linux-2.4.26, pentium4, portland compiler 5.1

a question about function eval()
Hi, I have a question about the usage of eval(). Wonder if any experienced user can help me out of it. I use eval() in the following function: semireg.pwl <- function(coef.s=rnorm(1),coef.a=rnorm(1),knots.pos=knots.x,knots.ini.val=knots.val){ knotn <- length(knots.pos) def.par.env <- sys.frame(1) print(def.par.env) print(environment(coef.s)) tg <- eval( (parse(text=

Symbolic derivation using D in package stats - how do I properly convert the returned call into a character string?
Dear all, I am using the function 'D' in the 'stats' package to perform symbolic derivation. This works very well and it is much faster than e.g. Mathematica (at least for my purposes). First, I would like to thank the development team for this excellent function. However, I run into trouble in some cases, particularly when I am to do some operations on long expressions

How to use "contour" function? I type "contour(th1,th2,SumofSquares,levels=c(seq(1000,4000,200)))" But I didn't see contour in the plot, I guess it is because my data is so big that contour is out of range. Does anybody know how to fix this problem? here th1 is a 1x101 array(158741.8-298529.6) th2 is another 1X101 array(-0.0058352269-0.2093140935) SumofSquares is a

About " Error: C stack usage is too close to the limit"
Hi everyone! I meet one problem when embedding R in C code, when I run the the R code in one child thread , it always print error info: Error: C stack usage is too close to the limit I also try to set R_CStackLimit = (uintptr_t)-1 to disable the C stack check as the R-exts doc say, but it still does not work, the error info still exist. Besides it is interesting that if i

Interpolation of azimuth values
Hello I will make an interpolation of data which represents azimuth direction ( angle from north in clockwise direction) values. But there is a problem. Say, for instance, while 1 and 359 indicate somewhat same direction, interpolation puts values in the range from 1 to 359. What can I do to solve the problem ? Anything you offer ? thanks in advance Ahmet Temiz General Directory of

Partial R-square in multiple linear regression
Hello, I am trying to obtain the partial r-square values (r^2 or R2) for individual predictors of an outcome variable in multiple linear regression. I am using the 'lm' function to calculate the beta coefficients, however, I would like to know the individual % contributions of several indepenent variables. I tried searching for this function in many R packages, but it has proven elusive

color scale in rgl plots
Hello, I'm trying to make a 3d plot using rgl in which the size and color of each point corresponds to certain attributes of each data point. The color attribute, let's call it X, is scaled to go from 0 to 1. The rainbow(64,start=0.7,end=0.1) palette is perfect for what I want but I don't know how to take that palette and pick a color from it based on the value of X for a given data

ID Mapping
Hi, I'm using samba for login in Linux via Active Directory (win 2008). In my Active Directory, there is a user "jin", and its primary group is "xts", its supplementary group is "Domain Users". I found that the gid mapping is inconsistent with different samba version. That is: For samba-4.4.4: # id jin uid=30000(jin) gid=30000(xts)

Forcing a variableinto a model using stepAIC
Dear All, I am attempting to use forward and/or backward selection to determine the best model for the variables I have. Unfortunately, because I am dealing with patients and every patient is receiving treatment I need to force the variable for treatment into the model. Is there a way to do this using R? (Additionally, the model is stratified by randomisation period). I know that SAS can be
