Window on a vector
Dear all,
I have a large vector (lets call it myVector) and I want to plot its value with the logic below
yaxis<-myVector[1]
yaxis<-c(xaxis,mean(myvector[2:3])
yaxis<-c(xaxis,mean(myvector[4:8])
yaxis<c(xaxis,mean(myvector[9:16])
yaxis<c(xaxis,mean(myvector[17:32])
this has to stop when the new ..... yaxis<c(xaxis,mean(myvector[1024:2048]) will not find the correspondent number

Clipping of display in Lattice graphics
I'm baffled as to how the Lattice package achieves clipping. Would
someone mind explaining this to me?
Firstly, my attempt using "just" the grid package:
x<-seq(0,3,by=0.3)/2.8
y<-seq(0,1,by=0.1)
grid.newpage()
grid.rect(gp=gpar(fill="pink"))
vp<-viewport(width=0.8, height=0.8)
pushViewport(vp)
grid.rect(gp=gpar(fill="white"))
grid.xaxis()

boxplot and xlim confusion?
I have some code as shown below. Basically, I would like three
boxplots to be set next to each other with no ylabels on the two
"inner" plots, and I want the same x axis range on all three. However,
it seems like boxplot does not respect the xlim setting. I've tried
the various ways I thought would work (par, boxplot(...xlim=)) but
none of them seem to work. I then tried plot.window,

Where are the ticks on grid.xaxis?
Hi R list,
I like the default ticks that are set up using grid.xaxis() or grid.yaxis()
with no arguments. Finding good values for the 'at' argument is usually not
a trivial task; the default behavior of these functions seems to work well.
The problem with this strategy is that I cannot figure out how to "recover"
the positions of these ticks when you do NOT specify the

Problems getting symbols() to show table data

animated grid graphics
I need to make a fairly complex animated graphic and decided to use grid for it.
A very simple example of what I need:

library(grid)
grid.newpage()
pushViewport(plotViewport())
pushViewport(viewport(xscale = extendrange(c(0, 100)),
yscale = extendrange(c(0, 100))))

Problem reading a PDF output
I generated a PDF output file of 10 plots. When I try to view it with
Adobe reader (R4 & R5), it will lockup the reader (it is consuming 100% of
the CPU) after presenting the 4th plot. I can generate the plots just fine
in Windows and as a postscript file reading it with GSview.
Is there anyway to tell what might be wrong with the PDF output? The file
is 890KB in size if anyone would like

Some non-fatal startup issues
Dear r-helpers,
I'm running Version 2.3.0 (2006-04-24) under OS X 10.4.6.
(1) When I start R from the terminal, it has no complaints.
(2) When I start R.app using R for Mac OS X Aqua GUI version 1.15
(3106) I get (I have increased the quote level of what is different
from the output of the terminal):

Customize axis labels in xyplot
Hello,
I'm plotting an xyplot where a continuous var recorded every min is plotted
on y, and time expressed as HH:MM:SS on x, as follows :
xaxis=list(tick.number=12,rot=90)
lst=list(x=xaxis)
xyplot(upt$LOAD_1 ~ upt$TIME, data=upt, type=c('g','p', 'r'), scales=lst)
On the x-axis, every time label is drawn and the label quickly become
unreadable as they overlap on each

Lattice: relation = 'free' in scales
Hello list,
I am making graphics for an article which I want to publish. The article is
about several methods (to calculate breeding values of individuals) applied
in several genetic scenarios (scen1 in the example) and using data from two
sources (scen 2 in my example). I want to specify the ylim of my plot and
have relation = 'free' for the yaxis but I would to avoid plotting the axis

Setting lattice par parameters
Hello
I'm plotting a large suite of barcharts and need to modify the size of the
text for both the yaxis and xaxis labels.
I've tried using the following:
> trellis.par.set(list(par.ylab.text = list(cex = 0.65)),
trellis.par.set(list = par.xlab.text = list(cex = 0.65))))
On inspection, however after I invoke this line,

barplot and ylim - display problems
The following single line of code shows what I am trying to do, and the
problem I am having...
barplot(c(101,102,103),ylim=c(100,103))
The 'xaxis' is missing, and the grey bars 'fall off' the plot area. This
is generally ugly, and I would like to trim the bars (ideally they would
have a ragged appearance to show that I am 'zooming in').
I can see why what I am trying to

Problems with trying to print 'refman.pdf'
When I try to print out the refman.pdf file of version 1.3.0 to an HP
LaserJet 8000 PS printer, I get the error message "Error occurred while

does not print correctly. The index page looks fine on the monitor, but

using printer on linux from windows
I am at my wits end.
I have a brother hl1440 laser which I have working with Linux under
cups, but I cannot get it working with samba and seen by a Windows XP
system. I already have disk shares working properly. The printers name
under cups is 1440. I want it's Windows printing to be done by the
Windows driver.
All the docs I have found online all seem to assume you already are a

reading partial file content
hi,
I'd like to extract data from very large files (ca 1-2 Mio lines),
and I already know which lines of these files I need.
Is there a way to do it without filling the memory with the whole file content?
The lines I need are randomly distributed within the files.
Thanks,
Marc

R: weighted.mean and tapply (again)
what about using "mapply"?
splitted.value<-with(x.1, split(VALUE, GROUP))
splitted.freq<-with(x.1, split(FREQUENCY, GROUP))
mapply(weighted.mean, splitted.value, w=splitted.freq)

error.crosses
Hello all, I have used describeBy to generate the following summary
statistics. I simply need x and y error bars on a plot that has CQN
(xaxis) and Price (yaxis). There should be four total points on the graph
(one for each supplier).
Using "error.crosses(desc$CQN, desc$Price)" does not work.
